My daughter had a bullying(欺凌) problem a couple of years ago. She kept receiving rude text messages from kids at school. Dealing with school bullying wasn’t easy, but I finally ended it. When you realize things are serious, it is no time to be silent.
If your kids are also receiving such text messages, take them directly to the headmaster and show him. Describe to him how it is affecting your kids. Tell him you will not tolerate it and that you want him to put an end to it now.
School bullying is a dangerous and serious issue these days, and any good headmaster will take your charges seriously. He will probably address the issues with the parents. If they are crappy(糟糕的) parents, then they may do nothing to their child. You may have to repeat this process several times, but you need to keep a check on those text messages and don’t allow your child to delete them.
Now it is time to draw your child close and take care of him/her, because he/she needs it. My daughter did not like me being involved either, but you are the only person your kid can depend on to solve this problem, so do it and mean business. Always be polite, but straightforward. The headmaster and parents must know you mean business.
If repeated meetings with the headmaster (and parents, if he allows it) do not work, then I would consider hiring a lawyer. That will send the message loud and clear. When you are talking about financial loss, most parents will stand up and take notice and act to keep their kids under control!
I know a lawyer is a big expense and not something you do lightly, but when bad things like school bullying are happening to your children, you must act and act quickly.
1.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “tolerate” in Paragraph 2?
A. mind B. discuss C. stand D. affect
2.What does the author suggest about school bullying in Paragraph 4?
A. Children can deal with it themselves.
B. Not all bullying problems can be solved.
C. Parents should fully respect kids’ thoughts.
D. It’s necessary for parents to be involved in it.
3.What should parents do if the headmaster fails to solve the bullying problem?
A. Ask a lawyer for help. B. Put your child under your care.
C. Meet the bullies in person. D. Ask the parents of the bullies for money.
4.Why does the author write the text?
A. To seek help. B. To offer advice.
C. To ask for advice. D. To share his experience.

Dear Expert: I was asked to retrieve my 14-year-old daughter from a five-day camping trip. She was suffering from such severe separation anxiety, her teacher thought she should go home. She hadn’t eaten anything and had refused to participate in any activities. The thing is my daughter is extremely bright and has many friends;she organized a few friends into a band, and it belongs to several school clubs. She’s just always had an extreme fear of being away from home.I don’t want her to miss out on other trips. Yours truly, Jonathan |
Dear Jonathan: Sometimes kids can push through homesickness, but in other instances they become hurt mentally and develop greater anxiety around outings, which can worsen and prolong(延长) the problem.Separation anxiety can be the result of many complex interactions some genetic(遗传的) and some learned. People with high anxiety tend to be fearful and worried, ever when the sense of threat is minimum(最低程度).Lots of talented, creative and successful people are exceedingly anxious. I believe your daughter is bright, active and popular, but simply can’t do well outside her home base.My suggestion is to take things in small steps,so your daughter can experience success, and always have a fallback(退却) plan if she needs it.For instance, she can plan an overnight with a friend, but assure her it’s no big deal to pick her up at midnight if she changes her mind. What’s important is to recognize the fear, and make plans to deal with whatever may cause distress. In other words, don’t try to talk your daughter out of her fears, equip her to master them. This way she’ll eventually gain the confidence to go on further trips. Expert |

When my daughter was in the fifth grade, she came home from school almost every night with three or more hours of homework. It was my duty to help her get it done. One night she worked until midnight doing her homework.
I felt annoyed, but I didn’t want the teacher to think I was lazy. So I never complained. I wasn’t sure, but it seemed to me that five hours of homework was a bit too much for a fifth grade student.
Later, I found out that parents and educators have discussed about homework for more than a century. Parents who like more homework want to give their children every advantage to succeed in today’s world. Some educators see homework as a way to help students perform better in tests.
Other parents dislike the recent trend toward more homework. They don’t want to stay up until midnight helping their children. They would prefer to spend their time going to the park or reading some really good books with their children. Added to the opposition(反对)are those who say that homework increases the gap(差距)between the rich and the poor. That’s because middle class families do better when it comes to helping their children with their homework.
So, who is right? Is homework an enemy or a help? According to experts, the truth lies somewhere in the middle.
1.The author thought that her daughter’s homework _________.
A.was too difficult
B.was too much to finish
C.was done more carefully than other students’
D.could be done as long as she helped her daughter
2.The author never complained to the teacher because _________.
A.she was too angry to talk with the teacher.
B.she did not like complaining.
C.she was afraid of being thought lazy by the teacher.
D.her daughter would be annoyed if she complained.
3.In the last paragraph, experts __________.
A.think middle school students should do lots of homework.
B.haven’t come up with any idea to solve this problem.
C.think homework should be given, but not too much.
D.support the idea that homework is good for students.

Mike Maietta was eating lunch when he got a text message from his mom.
“Notre Dame,” it said. “Big envelope!”
Mike, a senior at a Californian high school, shouted with joy. The big envelope meant that the excellent university in Indiana had offered him a place in its Class of 2013. But the $51,300 annual fee is a big trouble. So Mike and his parents are considering offers from several other colleges and are figuring out the costs of tuition, housing and holiday trips home.
This year, money is the driving factor(因素) for a growing number of high school seniors, who have to decide what colleges to attend this fall. Less jobs and house prices have changed family spending.
“We’re excited that Mike got into eight great schools,” said Mike’s father, an engineer at Microsoft. “But if you consider going to school out of state, you’ve got to think about all of the other costs: moving, flying back and forth for the holidays. You’re looking at about $3,000 a year, just for travel.”
As families weigh their choices, some are going back to financial aid offices hoping help packages can be increased.
Rachel Brown was happy to get a thick envelope from New York University (NYU). Although she has always wanted to live in Manhattan, she is seriously considering the University of California San Diego (UCSD), because of the high cost in New York.
“The tuition for NYU is twice as much as UCSD,” said Rachel, 17. “My mom doesn’t want me to have a big debt when I graduate, and I don’t want that either. I’d have to take out a loan of $15,000. I’ll check and see if there’s any way that NYU can offer me any financial aid.”
More than 7.6 million American students have filled out the Free Application for Students Aid, 19.9 percent increase over last year.
This month the Federal Department of Education urged college financial aid officers to give more help to certain families. A record 30,428 students applied for 2,300 places at Stanford, partly because the university increased financial aid for families earning below $10,000.
1.Mike may give up Notre Dame because of ______.
A.travel fees
B.financial concerns
C.poor exam results
D.worries about living far away from home
2.The phrase “Big envelope” in paragraph 2 probably refers to“______”.
A.A text message B.A large gift package
C.An admission letter D.A scholarship letter
3.What can we learn from the passage?
A.The number of American senior students applying for financial aid is increasing.
B.Rachel Brown has given up NYU because of its high tuition and big debts.
C.It is inevitably hard for college students to borrow money to cover costs.
D.An interest-free loan for students helps more students apply for Stanford.
4.The passage mainly focuses on ______
A.the calculation of different costs including tuition
B.the extremely hard financial situation in America
C.the excitement of students’ being able to enter ideal colleges
D.the financial crisis of families over college entrance

Text messaging, or simply “texting”, with allows people to send and receive messages on mobile phones, becomes very popular today.
The advantages of texting are obvious. Texting helps to save money. If you have a few words to greet your families and friends on their birthdays or on some important festivals, sending messages can be cheaper than phone calling. Texting helps to save time. Even if you want to send a message to 100 people, you can do it one second. Texting helps you to “talk” to someone when he is too busy to answer the phone. Texting can also help you to “talk” to someone secretly if you don’t want others to hear what you are talking on the phone. These advantages are so amazing that many people are crazy about it. They hold mobile phones in hands all day long, send dozens of messages each day, and even text while driving or walking.
However, texting has its disadvantages. Junk messages may come into your mobile phone box now and then. When your phone box gets too full, you can’t receive any more messages. You may therefore miss some important information.
What’s more, if you don’t do texting properly, for example texting while driving or walking, it can be dangerous. It can cause injuries and even death. It was reported that about 6,000 people were killed and half a million were injured for this reason each year. In Fort Lee, a small town in New Jersey, USA, three people died because they walked into traffic while texting in 2011. Two researchers at Stony Brook University, New York found that texters are 60% more probably to have an accident than others. When people are texting, they don’t notice other people or things around them. To reduce traffic accidents, all drivers of the UN are now not allowed to text while driving. About 32 countries have passed laws restricting the use of mobile phones while driving.

At noon, Shi Huizi received a text message: “This is Yuantong Express. Please come to the school gate and pick up your parcel.” The 22-year-old girl at Beijing International Studies University rushed to the school gate, where hundreds of parcels lay waiting to be collected by their owners.
This scene is not uncommon on China’s campuses, as shopping online has become an important part of their lifestyle for many university students. But convenient as it is, online shopping among students is marked by impulse(冲动) buying and other risks. Students should be cautious to avoid them.
According to Taobao, during last year’s graduation season, 250,000 graduate students from 116 “211” project universities nationwide spent 846 million yuan on Taobao. Beijing Haidian Consumers’ Association conducted a survey on the online purchasing behavior of students, which showed that nearly 54 percent of respondents had made irrational purchases.
Yang Yi is one of them. The 23-year-old business administration major at Beijing Wuzi University bought a limited edition Gundam model kit online for a small fortune, only to find that its appeal faded rapidly. “I did like it when I bought it, but it doesn’t look so attractive to me anymore now. So I’ve decided to sell it to pay off my debts,” says Yang. Yang’s experience reflects the consumption patterns (消费方式) of many university students. In an attempt to be unique, many of them turn to online shops to buy “exotic(奇异的)” items not easily found in the domestic (国内的) market.
According to Lei Li, a psychology professor at Renmin University, the impulsive buying patterns found among students have psychological roots. When shopping online is a campus trend, it’s not only about convenience, but also about group identification(认可). “If everyone is doing something and you’re not, you’re less likely to be accepted by others,” Lei says. The mentality(心态) of not wanting to be left out is fuelling impulse buying.
As he Haidian survey indicates, online shopping is not always a satisfying experience. Of 848 respondents(调查对象) from universities based in Beijing, 42 percent said they had received products that didn’t match the online description or photos. Even so, 72.5 percent of student buyers don’t return unsatisfactory goods due to the inconvenience it causes and long procedures.
Lei suggests that students who are enthusiastic about online shopping “pay attention to the consequences and develop a wiser way of consuming—namely, buying items within their budget and being aware of the risks of buying online.”

A. By making comparisons.

A. Because of the mind of not wanting to be left out in a group.
B. Because many students turn to online shops trying to buy rare items in China.
C. Because it is convenient to buy online.
D. Because the school hasn’t taught them how to consume wisely.
3.What does the underlined word “irrational” in Para. 3 mean?
A. Unreasonable. B. Expensive.
C. Worthless. D. Priceless.
