I received pictures of my daughter floating (漂浮) on a lake in California. Right there under the sun during the hottest time of the day, she has only her swimsuit to cover her.
When I showed it to my students, it was as if I had shown them scenes from a horror (恐怖) movie.
“But she will get dark,” they said.
“That’s what she wants,” I told them. “We think darker skin (肤色) is beautiful.”
They looked at me in disbelief. It was as if I came from the moon.
For years, American girls spend their summer trying to get as tanned (晒黑) as possible. In China, on the other hand, girls use umbrellas all year round.
What in the world is going on?
The pale skin we think looks unattractive (不漂亮) is what Asian women want. Both groups want to meet their culture’s standard (标准) of beauty.
In the US, if you can afford to go on vacation in the summer, you head for a river, a lake or a beach, where you try to get as much sun as possible. If you are rich you take a winter vacation in some sunny spot. Your winter tan shows your wealth.
In China, once upon a time, the few wealthy were the ones who didn’t have to work out in the hot sun. So the whiter the skin, the richer the woman. The folk opera performers who play these ladies wore lots of white makeup (妆容). The tradition survives to this day.
So it comes naturally that none of my students wishes to follow the Western ways in this regard.
But now I am noticing that a new business – the tanning booth (美黑店) – started up in China. I admire those brave enough to define(给…下定义)their own idea of beauty, but I do wonder what their grandmothers would have to say to them about it!
1.The students were shocked at the picture the writer showed them because ______.
A. they thought it shameful for a girl only to wear a swimsuit
B. the writer’s daughter was wearing very little while out in the sun
C. it is dangerous for a girl to be out on a lake alone
D. with the powerful sunlight the writer’s daughter would have got a suntan
2. According to the article, which kind of woman meets the American standard of beauty?
A. Women with blond hair. B. Women with a slim figure.
C. Women with tanned skin. D. Women with pale skin.
3. In the US a winter tan usually means the person _____.
A. is hard-working B. doesn’t have to work
C. has a lot of money and spare time D. is from a very poor family
4.The writer ______ the tanning booth started up in China.
A. is not interested in B. doesn’t understand
C. doesn’t like D. has mixed feelings about

My daughter had a bullying(欺凌) problem a couple of years ago. She kept receiving rude text messages from kids at school. Dealing with school bullying wasn’t easy, but I finally ended it. When you realize things are serious, it is no time to be silent.
If your kids are also receiving such text messages, take them directly to the headmaster and show him. Describe to him how it is affecting your kids. Tell him you will not tolerate it and that you want him to put an end to it now.
School bullying is a dangerous and serious issue these days, and any good headmaster will take your charges seriously. He will probably address the issues with the parents. If they are crappy(糟糕的) parents, then they may do nothing to their child. You may have to repeat this process several times, but you need to keep a check on those text messages and don’t allow your child to delete them.
Now it is time to draw your child close and take care of him/her, because he/she needs it. My daughter did not like me being involved either, but you are the only person your kid can depend on to solve this problem, so do it and mean business. Always be polite, but straightforward. The headmaster and parents must know you mean business.
If repeated meetings with the headmaster (and parents, if he allows it) do not work, then I would consider hiring a lawyer. That will send the message loud and clear. When you are talking about financial loss, most parents will stand up and take notice and act to keep their kids under control!
I know a lawyer is a big expense and not something you do lightly, but when bad things like school bullying are happening to your children, you must act and act quickly.
1.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “tolerate” in Paragraph 2?
A. mind B. discuss C. stand D. affect
2.What does the author suggest about school bullying in Paragraph 4?
A. Children can deal with it themselves.
B. Not all bullying problems can be solved.
C. Parents should fully respect kids’ thoughts.
D. It’s necessary for parents to be involved in it.
3.What should parents do if the headmaster fails to solve the bullying problem?
A. Ask a lawyer for help. B. Put your child under your care.
C. Meet the bullies in person. D. Ask the parents of the bullies for money.
4.Why does the author write the text?
A. To seek help. B. To offer advice.
C. To ask for advice. D. To share his experience.

A primary school art teacher has received a good deal of praise since her daughter posted photos of her special school project online.
Rebecca Bonner teaches at Mcauliffe Elementary School in Highland Village, Texas. In total, she hosts art classes for about 580 students who are aged from 3 to 11 years old. Bonner always tries to encourage her students to be creative by telling them to ''turn their mess-up into a dress-up''. So as a way of giving an example of her words, she invited all of her students to draw freely on a white dress that she brought to school. For two weeks, the young students used their pens to add their own little designs (设计) to the dress. The art teacher then showed their work by proudly wearing the dress for a school art show.
Her students were not the only ones happy to see their art come to life-Bonner's 20-year-old daughter Charlece Lake was so moved by her mother's project. Charlece took some photos of Bonner wearing the dress and posted them to Twitter, saying that her mom was ''the cutest art teacher ever''. Since posting the pictures, they have been shared thousands of times.
Though Bonner was surprised that her project had been widely known, she said that she was happy for the chance to serve as a good role model for art. ''I'm not worried about being famous of anything like that but I do think it's great to promote(推广) the arts, because art is not common among primary schools, '' Bonner said. ''I think it's really important for kids to have that place to create, and that freedom(自由) to create, '' she added.

Ifhas anyone noticed how, with the passage of time, one’s relationship with one’s grown-up daughters and sons becomes changed? I’ve been aware of this for some time but I’m not quite sure how to deal with it.
Take the kitchen sink for example.
Following a family get-together at my place, I walked into the kitchen to find Kate, my daughter, carefully cleaning the sink.
“Don’t do that; what are you doing that for?” I said, unhappy about the hidden criticism.
“Mum,” she said, “you really ought to put your glasses on when you clean the sink. Behind the tap here was black!”
But it’s not just things like kitchen sinks. Another time Kate arrived to pick me up to lunch. She looked at me and then asked, “Mum, why do you use brown eyebrow pencil when your hair is grey?”
A sudden memory of her, aged 14, going to her first mixed party flooded back. She had come in to say goodbye. For a moment I thought she’d been an accident. Both eyes were black. I remember suggesting that perhaps a little less eye make-up might be more effective.
Now I told her, “My hair used to be brown.”
“It looks absurd.(荒唐)”
“Mrs. Menzies had dark eyebrows with grey hair.”
“Yes, but you’re not Mrs. Menzies, are you?” she said triumphantly, as if that proved her point.
But a recent event made me realize that something really must be done.
She had returned home for a few weeks before getting married. One evening I went out on a dinner date. By the time my companion left me at the front door, it was about 2am. As I stepped in, an angry figure in a white nightgown(睡衣)stopped me.
“Well, what time of night is this to be coming home?” she shouted. “Where have you been? I’ve been worried sick!”
Shades of the past come back to disturb me. But what should I do about all this? Nothing, probably. Maybe, after all, it’s only a stage young people are going through.

3.How does the mother feel after all these have happened?

B.their roles changed as time passed |
C.her daughter very much cared about her |
