I arrived in the classroom, ready to share my knowledge and experience with 76 students who would be my English literature class.Having taught in the US for 17 years,I have no doubt about my ability to hold their attention and to impress on them my admiration for the literature of my mother tongue.
I was shocked when the monitor shouted,“stand up!”The entire class rose as I entered the room and I was somewhat confused about how to get them to sit down again, but once the embarrassment was over,I quickly regained my calmness and admiration.I went back to my office with the rosy glow which came from a strong sense of achievement.
My students kept diaries. However,as I read them, the rosy glow was gradually replaced by a strong sense of sadness. The first diary said,“Our literature teacher didn’t teach us anything today.Perhaps her next lecture will be better.”Greatly surprised,I read diary after diary, each expressing a similar theme.“Didn’t I teach them anything?I described the entire Western philosophy (哲学) and laid the historical background for all the works we will study in class,”I complained.“How should they say I didn’t teach them anything?”
It was a long term, and it gradually became clear that my ideas about education were not the same as those of my students.I thought a teacher’s job was to raise interesting questions and provide enough background so that students could draw their own conclusions. My students thought a teacher’s job was to provide exact information as directly and clearly as possible. What a difference!
However,I also learned a lot,and the experience with my Chinese students has made me a better American teacher, knowing how to teach in a different culture.
1.The writer wants to tell us through his experience that ________.
A.Chinese students are hard to teach
B.he has no experience in teaching Chinese students
C.Chinese students has made him a better American teacher
D.different countries have different cultures even in teaching
2.We can know that on the first day the writer ________.
A.was disappointed at her students’ performance B.felt very confident about herself at first
C.felt she didn’t teach them much D.was very confident about her students
3.At the beginning of the lesson, the writer got confused because of ________.
A.cultural differences B.her own embarrassment
C.students’ embarrassment D.students’ admiration
4.The writer learnt from their diaries that the students wanted to ________.
A.raise interesting questions B.know more about background
C.draw their own conclusions D.know more about exact facts

Dear Miss Hooper,
I’m writing to thank you for your help this year. There were lots of subjects (主题) in class, but you made sure that I could understand every one. To tell the truth, you’re the best teacher I’ve met. You explain things so clearly, and are also so kind. I really enjoyed every minute of your class.
There were so many best parts this year. Whatever the subject, you made it fun and interesting to everyone. All of your students found learning new things so easy because of you. I really believe you have a great teaching skill. You should be very proud (自豪的) of the way that you help children learn. It is because of you that I’ve decided to become a teacher when I grow up.
I have mixed feelings about school next year. I’m sad that you won’t be my teacher anymore. However, I’m happy that other children will get to share your knowledge (学问). I’m sure that they’ll thank you for your good work.

Thank you once again for all of your help. You are really a great teacher and you’ve helped me greatly. I hope that we can share the same classroom again one day.
Yours,
Jacob Maclean

Every morning, I will go to school with lunch bags that contained a sandwich, fruit, and dessert.
Then, one day, much to my surprise, there was no dessert in my lunch! What could have happened to it? Did Mom forget to make or buy it? Oh, well, I thought. It's only one time, so it's no big deal. But, for the next few days, my lunch contained no dessert! So one day, after school, as soon as I got home, I asked," Mom! Why haven't you been putting a dessert in my school lunches?" Mom answered, "Why, Eugene. I have been including a dessert in your lunch. If you're not getting them, then who is?"
So then we thought of my activities, and what I did with my lunch each day. As soon as I arrived at school I always put my lunch in the classroom closet(储物间)along with all of the other lunches. And that brought us to Carl---the bad boy of the third-grade classroom. The teacher didn't like him in class and would send him to the closet, where he would spend most of each day.
Carl lived in a group faster home(集体寄养之家).He was loud and somewhat of a thief; he would take just about anything that wasn't fastened down, so he wasn't welcome at school. Mom and I concluded that with nothing else to do Carl was probably going through the lunches and eating what he liked.

Students and Technology in the Classroom
I love my blackberry—it’s my little connection to the larger world that can go anywhere with me. I also love my laptop computer,as it holds all of my writing and thoughts. Despite this love of technology, I know that there are times when I need to move away from these devices(设备) and truly communicate with others.
On occasion, I teach a course called History Matters for a group of higher education managers. My goals for the class include a full discussion of historical themes and ideas. Because I want students to thoroughly study the material and exchange their ideas with each other in the classroom, I have a rule —no laptop, iPads, phones, etc. When students were told my rule in advance of the class, some of them were not happy.
Most students assume that my reasons for this rule include unpleasant experiences in the past with students misusing technology. There’s a bit of truth to that. Some students assume that I am anti-technology. There’s no truth in that at all. I love technology and try to keep up with it so I can relate to my students.
The real reason why I ask students to leave technology at the door is that I think there are very few places in which we can have deep conversions and truly engage complex ideas. Interruptions by technology often break concentration and allow for too much dependence on outside information for ideas. I want students to dig deep within themselves for inspiration and ideas. I want them to push each other to think differently and make connections between the course material and the class discussion.
I’ve been teaching my history class in this way for many years and the evaluations reflect student satisfaction with the environment that I create. Students realize that with deep conversation and challenge, they learn at a level that helps them keep the course material beyond the classroom.
I’m not saying that I won’t ever change my mind about technology use in my history class, but until I hear a really good reason for the change, I’m sticking to my plan. A few hours of technology-free dialogue is just too sweet to give up.
1.Some of the students in the history class were unhappy with____
A.the course material B.the author’s class regulations
C.discussion topics D.others’ misuse of technology
2.The underlined word “engage ”in para.4 probably means ____
A.explore B.accept C.change D.reject
3.According to the author, the use of technology in the classroom may ____
A.keep students from doing independent thinking
B.encourage students to have in-depth conversations
C.help students to better understand complex themes
D.affect students’ concentration on course evaluation
4.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the author ____
A.is quite stubborn
B.will give up teaching history
C.values technology-free dialogues in his class
D.will change his teaching plan soon

My family and I never talked about school as the ticket to a future. I was in the classrooms, but I wasn’t there to learn to write, read or even speak. When it was my turn to read, I wanted to hide. I was 13 years old, but I already hated being who I was.
I had an English teacher, Mr. Creech, who knew I couldn’t read. In one of my first lessons the teacher said that anyone who had a reading age below six had to stand up. I felt so embarrassed. But at the same time, it made me realize that I needed to change the situation. I was determined it wouldn’t happen again. Later that day, Mr. Creech encouraged me and promised he would try his best to help me learn to read. From then on, I never gave up practicing reading.
Now I was 41 years old. One day, I planned to fly back to Texas to visit my friends and family. On my way from the airport, I saw Mr. Creech buying himself a drink. I rushed over and reached into my pocket to pay for him.”Do I know you?”he asked.”Yes, sir, you do know me,”I answered excitedly.”My name is Anthony Hamilton. You taught me English.”The look on his face told me that he remembered the boy he’d once encouraged.
“I’m so glad I had a chance to see you,”I said.”And Mr. Creech, I have great news to share.”I told him I had learned to read. But that wasn’t all. I had become a published author and an active speaker.”The next time you get another Anthony Hamilton in your classroom, please encourage him to read as well.”I added.
The experts say what once worried me has a name: dyslexia(诵读困难症). But I can tell you it was a lack of desire for education.
1.Why did the author want to hide?
A.Because he didn’t have a ticket. B.Because he couldn’t read at all.
C.Because he felt sorry for himself. D.Because he hated being laughed at.
2.Which of the following could best describe Mr. Creech?
A.Friendly and humorous. B.Strict and eager.
C.Emotional and devoted. D.Kind and responsible.
3.What can we infer from the passage?
A.The author was thankful to Mr. Creech.
B.Mr. Creech taught two students called Anthony Hamilton.
C.The author had become a published author and an active speaker.
D.Dyslexia was the hidden reason that made the author unable to read.

After finishing my teaching for a school year, I thought that I should go back to Montreal, Quebec, my hometown for a visit. My main goal was to relax in preparation for the challenges of my retirement(退休) in the coming year.
Through my stay in Montreal, I met lots of Chinese who were trying hard to succeed and then led a better life in Canada. Some travelled thousands of miles to get knowledge. When I spoke with some of them about the major barrier(障碍) they had to face after they arrived in Canada, they all talked about the two official languages of Canada. But I was impressed by their ability to express their ideas while they were changing between English and French.
Almost all of those people said they often felt homesick. They miss their families and friends. Though Montreal has lots of Chinese restaurants, they long for a home•cooked meal.
I met some tourists who were trying to realize their childhood dreams of experiencing the life in a developed country. When I asked them if Montreal had lived up to their expectations, they hesitated. They said that reality never agrees with fantasies. However, they were glad to have the opportunity to visit Montreal and didn't regret taking the trip.
Not all the Chinese people I met were happy. I once met a young lady who met with a gentleman through the Internet. However, to her disappointment, he disappeared after he promised to marry her in Montreal.
I was served by another Chinese person who could not deal with the challenges of studying in an English-speaking environment and ended up working in a restaurant with low pay.
Exploring different parts of the world, without any doubt, is an enriching experience. However, one should be realistic when it comes to leaving his hometown to start a new life in a foreign country. One should take time to examine the advantages and the shortcomings of the adventure before he decides to chase an uncertain dream of achieving success or leading a better life.
1.Why did the writer go to his hometown?
A.To meet his old friends.
B.To study a new language.
C.To go on with his teaching.
D.To prepare for his retirement life.
2.What is the main barrier for some Chinese to get knowledge in Canada?
A.Food. B.Homesickness. C.Language. D.Income.
3.The writer thinks that .
A.overseas Chinese are good at communication in Canada
B.the trip to Montreal is a good chance for people to study
C.overseas Chinese feel disappointed at their life in Canada
D.people should think carefully before chasing their dreams abroad
4.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Improving Life Skills in Canada
B.Exploring Different Parts of Canada
C.Struggling for a Better Life in Canada
D.Going to Canada—Your Ideal Destination

As summer turns to fall and parents are buying children their new backpacks, it is time to think of how our schools work and whether they are inspiring true learning. The schools of today are largely those of our great-grandparents. While white boards may have replaced blackboards and DVDs are used instead of projectors, schoolroom atmosphere is remarkably unchanged. Teachers deliver inert (无活力的) information to eager and empty minds who will soon lose what Ellen Galinsky described as the “fire in their eyes”.
Our view of leaning is trapped in the learning illusion (错误观念) that content is all that matters. Of course, content is important. Who would not want to have the multiplication tables memorized? But content is constantly changing. Pluto? No longer a planet. If memorization of content is everything, children’s knowledge will be out of date. Classrooms at all levels need to emphasize “the six C’s”: content, collaboration, communication, confidence (risk-taking), critical thinking and creative innovation (创新).
Our approach to the economic threats we see on our borders is to push for 19th century memorization in a 21st century world. Yet the facts will be as close at the Google generation’s fingertips. We need to teach our children how to learn, and how Sally and Pedro can together figure out how to use technology to understand why some trees never lose their leaves while others do. We need John and Qonick to argue about the best way to solve that math problem, rather than just listen to what the teacher tells them. Today’s schools should be active places where kids are actually thinking together about problem-solving.
None of this is to say that children cannot learn in school. They can. But children are often expected to sit still, listen and repeat disembodied content. The “keys to the kingdom” of the 21st century will go to those who love to learn and can transform their knowledge in innovative ways.
1.The underlined part “fire in their eyes” in Paragraph 1 probably means “_______”.
A.desire for knowledge B.determination to succeed
C.anger shown to the teachers D.patience for the exam results
2.Why does the author mention “Pluto” in the second paragraph?
A.To explain the meaning of the planet. B.To emphasize the school education.
C.To show knowledge is changeable. D.To advise children to work hard.
3.Who does the Google generation refer to?
A.Scientists in the 19th century. B.The students in the 21st century.
C.Famous people in the 20th century. D.Experienced teachers in the world.
4.It can be concluded from the text that _________.
A.students should sit still in the classroom B.it is better for children to learn at home
C.creative learning is very important now D.white boards can’t be used at school

There are times when I leave for my running-group sessions with little enthusiasm. It might be because I’m tired, or stressed, or don’t want to leave something else. But I’m the coach, so I can’t choose to give it a miss.
It was yet another cold, dark, wet evening and I wasn’t feeling the love as I gathered all the necessary equipment. No one in their right mind will come out in this weather, I thought. But when I turned into the car park, my headlights picked out runners making a dash through the rain to our meeting point, where others were already working out to stay warm, with chat, laughter and hugs. They, too, I realized, might be tired, stressed or busy. But, unlike me, they had a choice about whether to come running or stay at home. And that makes their decision to come---and to keep on coming---more encouraging. Then, I went home from the run feeling better than when I’d arrived.
I believe one of the strongest motivations(激励;动机) behind these runners’ decisions to come along is being part of a group. Belonging to a running community makes running greater than running itself. It’s no longer just a workout; it’s a get-together with friends, a laugh and a shared experience. It provides a chance to share your success and disappointments, to be congratulated and comforted, and, just as important, to congratulate and comfort others.
Research has long shown the possibility of staying motivated is higher when exercise takes place in a group. The reasons are many. A study at the University of Southern California found people enjoy physical activity more when they are with others and are more likely to keep it up over the long term. And research by Strava in 2017 found running in a group made runners go faster and further. Using data from 90 million runs taking place all over the world, Strava found that the average pace of runs taking place in a group was seven seconds per mile quicker than solo runs, and the distance covered was an average of 1.3 miles further.
I joke about people being more motivated to come to my running sessions by the tea and biscuits afterwards than by the running itself. It might be true, but it doesn’t matter. Those laughter-filled minutes are every bit as important as the running in between.
1.What can we infer from the first paragraph?
A.The coach was always enthusiastic.
B.The coach was never discouraged.
C.The coach was sometimes unwilling.
D.The coach was often worn out.
2.Why is being part of a group most motivational?
A.It needs a coach who can offer help.
B.It frees runners from boring daily work.
C.It helps members to beat their records.
D.It creates space for their communication.
3.That being in a group improves performance is proven by _______ .
A.taking a typical example B.performing an experiment
C.listing accurate data D.sharing his experiences
4.Tea and biscuits in running sessions are meant to _________ .
A.attract more runners from other groups
B.build up some strength before running
C.make his running group stand out of all
D.add more life to their running experience
