Many people believe that language belongs to human beings. However, cats have developed a language not for each other, but for the human beings who have them as pets.
When communicating with each other, cats "talk" with a system of signals. Their tails, rather than any kind of “speech", act as an important way to express themselves. They also touch each other to express their feelings. With other cats, they will use their voice only to express pain. Unbelievably, all of that changes when a human walks into the room. Cats use many different kinds of vocal (声音的)expressions when they communicate with a person. Since these vocal expressions are not used to communicate with other cats, it seems that cats have developed this "language" to communicate with their human owners.
This fact is shown more clearly when researchers are watching rooms that have only one cat and those with several cats. And when there is only one cat in the room, it is usually very vocal, since the only creature around with whom the cat can communicate is its owner. Cats with other cats, though, are much quieter. If they want to have a conversation, they only need go to other cats and communicate in their natural way.
Since cats have learned to meow( 喵喵叫) for the only purpose of communicating with human owners, their owners should take the time to learn what their different meows mean. If an owner knows, to name just a few examples, which meow means the cat is hungry, which means the cat .wants to be petted, and which means the cat wants to have a little "conversation" , the relationship between cats and owners will be closer.
1.If a cat, together with other cats, finds its body hurts, it may express it with its _______.
A.tail B.eyes
C.head D.voice
2.When a human enters a room with some cats, what will they do?
A.Stop making any noise. B.Use their tails to show love.
C.Begin .to use vocal expressions. D.Stop communicating with each other.
3.What are cat owners advised to do?
A.Communicate more with cats. B.Learn to meow in different ways.
C.Encourage cats to talk with each other. D.Teach cats to understand human language.
4.What is the text mainly about? . .
A.The language of cats. B.Advice on keeping pets.

Many people believe that you lose the ability to learn new languages as you get older. Language experts, however, will tell you that you’re never too old to learn a new language. As you get older, it can be more difficult to learn a new language, though.
Children and adults learn new languages in different ways. For children, language is their life. They study for thousands of hours every year, because they need to learn languages to become part of their communities. Adults, on the other hand, are already part of a language community. Learning a new language means becoming part of another language community, and adults rarely get the chance to practice as much as young children do.
Moreover, children learning a new language are expected to make mistakes. This gives them freedom when learning to be daring and confident. Adults, however, often feel pressured to be perfect when learning a new language. This can discourage many people and make it even harder to learn a new language.
When young children learn a new language, they come to see various languages as a “normal” part of society. This mindset (思维模式) helps them embrace learning a new language without feeling like they’re doing something unusual or “too hard”.
So if you want to learn a new language, go for it! It’s never too late to learn a new language. If you’re older, it may take more work, but it can be done. If you’re a young child, though, now is the time to step out and learn a new language!

Languages have been coming and going for thousands of years, but in recent times there has been less coming and a lot more going. When the world was still populated by hunter-gatherers, small, tightly knit(联系) groups developed their own patterns of speech independent of each other. Some language experts believe that 10,000 years ago, when the world had just five to ten million people, they spoke perhaps 12,000 languages between them.
Soon afterwards, many of those people started settling down to become farmers, and their languages too became more settled and fewer in number. In recent centuries, trade, industrialization, the development of the nation-state and the spread of universal compulsory education, especially globalisation and better communications in the past few decades, all have caused many languages to disappear, and dominant languages such as English, Spanish and Chinese are increasingly taking over.
At present, the world has about 6,800 languages. The distribution of these languages is hugely uneven. The general rule is that mild zones have relatively few languages. Often spoken by many people while hot, wet zones have lots, often spoken by small numbers. Europe has only around 200 Languages: the Americas about 1,000, Africa 2,400; and Asia and the Pacific perhaps 3,200, of which Papua New Guinea alone accounts for well over 800. The median number(中位数) of speakers is a mere 6,000, which means that half the worlds languages are spoken by fewer people than that.
Already well over 400 of the total of 6,800 languages are close to extinction(消亡), with only a few elderly speakers left. Pick, at random, Busuu in Cameroon (eight remaining speakers), Chiapaneco in Mexico(150). Lipan Apache in the United States(two or three) or Wadjigu in Australia (one, with a question-mark): none of these seems to have much chance of survival.
1.What can we infer about languages in hunter-gatherer times?
A.They developed very fast. B.They were large in number.
C.They had similar patters. D.They were closely connected
2.Which of the following best explains "dominant" underlined in paragraph 2?
A.Complex. B.Advanced.
C.Powerful. D.Modern.
3.How many languages are spoken by less than 6, 000 people at present?
A.About 6,800 . B.About 3,400
C.About 2,400 D.About 1,200.
4.What is the main idea of the text?
A.New languages will be created.
B.Peoples lifestyles are reflected in languages.
C.Human development results in fewer languages.
D.Geography determines language evolution.

To me, Shakespeare is a bit of a touchy subject in the theatre industry. I believe Shakespeare’s plays to be the most challenging in terms of language. When you have challenging language, then understanding the plot and topics will become a challenge as well. It’s like a chain. If you don’t understand it from the start, it makes things hard later on and people tend to give up on it. Regardless of all of this, I believe Shakespeare is important in the sense that it’s where true theatre started. William Shakespeare is a name everyone knows regardless of whether you enjoy his works or not.
Many high schools or colleges put on at least one Shakespeare play every few years and I like that. I think it’s important to expose students to plays that are a bit more challenging than they used to be. Of course. it’s not easy to understand these plays but then think about the people who act in those plays. When acting, you have to understand your character and not only that, you need to completely know everything going on around you as well. So to understand the script (剧本) is one thing. but to act in a Shakespeare play is a whole another thing. How about memorizing the lines? That’s one of the hardest things actors have to get through. It is such heightened language that it’s almost like learning a foreign language. Shakespeare is tough and that’s what I think I love it the most. The challenge is understanding. Once you have that then you have room to play with it.
Therefore, if people walked into a Shakespeare play with more of an open mind, their experience would be so much better. There is a large amount of exploration and discovery in his plays and the experience can be really satisfying. It’s hard stuff, but it’s fascinating and we should be embracing it.
1.What’s the biggest challenge in understanding Shakespeare’s plays?
A.The challenging language. B.The variety of its topic.
C.The complicated plot. D.The memorable characters.
2.What’s the author’s attitude towards putting on Shakespeare’s plays at colleges?
A.Critical. B.Cautious.
C.Favorable. D.Indifferent.
3.What does the text suggest people do when enjoying Shakespeare’s plays?
A.Act them out. B.Remember the lines in them.
C.Learn Shakespeare’s language. D.Enjoy them with an open mind.
4.What is the text mainly about?
A.The characteristics of Shakespeare’s plays.
B.The plots and topics of Shakespeare’s plays.
C.The importance and way of enjoying Shakespeare’s plays.
D.The stress from performing Shakespeare’s plays.

A while ago, people used to believe that only humans can use tools — but Jane Goodall showed that humans aren’t the only ones to do so. We’ve since found several species that build and use their own tools. Then, many thought that it’s our cultural and family ties that separate us from the animals. Actually, that’s not true either. Several other species, including whales, have shown important cultural behaviors.
Researchers have found that related whales returned to the same locations year after year, and decade after decade, passing the information from one generation to the next. Researchers analyzed the structure of the beluga whale society, finding that migratory culture is inherited(继承). Furthermore, this cultural inheritance maintains the family ties of beluga whales. This cultural legacy(遗传)is so powerful that some travel as far as 6,000 kilometers each year.
“What interested us most was whether particular whales returned to where they were born or grew up and if this was an inherited behavior,” said Greg O’ Corry-Crowe, Ph.D., lead author and a research professor at FAU’s Harbor Branch. “The only way that we could definitively answer these questions was to find and track close relatives from one year to the next and one decade to the next.”
Researchers also found that beluga whales exhibit an impressively broad range of vocal repertoires and acoustic systems(复杂的声音体系)which suggests that they form complex interpersonal relationships. They like to hang out in the thousands near shore during the summer when the ice melts. Eventually, researchers hope that this will not only enable us to better understand these surprisingly complex species but also develop better ways to protect them in the face of a changing environment — the polar regions, where the beluga whales live, are extremely exposed to climate change.
“Findings from our study are expanding our understanding of how complicated non- primate(非灵长类)societies can be and how important culture is for the survival of these species,” said O’ Corry-Crowe. “Our findings also will influence our thinking in terms of how populations and species are going to adapt to dramatic environmental changes. There are few places where this is more urgent than in the rapidly changing polar regions.”
1.According to the passage, whales usually .
A. produce their tools B. use their own tools
C. live near the coast D. have their cultural ties
2.It can be inferred that migratory culture has .
A. a short and insignificant effect on beluga whales
B. inherited from the structure of beluga whale society
C. a long and far-reaching effect on beluga whales
D. attracted beluga whales to several fixed locations
3.What’s the purpose of the research?
A. To find beluga whales’ behaviors.
B. To find beluga whales’ acoustic systems.
C. To find beluga whales’ interpersonal relationships.
D. To better understand and protect beluga whales.
4.Why does O’ Corry-Crowe consider it urgent to understand beluga whales’ adaption to their surroundings?
A. Because of the very sophisticated non-primate societies.
B. Because of the rapid environmental changes in polar regions.
C. Because of the misunderstanding of beluga whales’ migrations.
D. Because of the too far distance for beluga whales to migrate.

Do you still remember your favorite poem during high school or some other important periods in your life? Why is it that decades later it still stands out in your mind? Probably the main reason is that some aspect of that poem resonates (产生共鸣) with you. In the same way, you too as a school leader can touch the hearts of your teachers and students.
Poetry allows us to experience strong spiritual connections to things around us and to the past. The power that poetry has displayed over time and across cultures actually satisfies this common need of the human heart and soul.
As one of the oldest art forms, poetry has successfully connected various parts of humanity (人性) from one generation to another. Referring to poetry, Hillyer makes a simple yet meaningful statement,“ With this key mankind unlocked his heart.”
School leaders can find and make use of the value of poetry for themselves, their students and their teachers. Beyond the simple use of poetry, techniques of poetry such as repetitions (重复) can be used to take advantage of the power of language to transform communication, create meaning and culture of care and attention.
Since schools are mainly about people and relationships, school leaders, like poets, are required to inspire and encourage the human heart. The use of poetry — or even of some techniques of poetry — in school leadership not only helps to improve communication, but also serves to meet the human need for inspiration.
1.Who is the passage mainly written for?
A.Students. B.Teachers.
C.School leaders. D.Poets.
2.The use of poetry or techniques of poetry in school leadership is in fact to make use of ______ .
A.the power of language
B.the power of school leaders
C.people’s preference for poetry
D.people’s desire for communication
3.What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To talk about the art of being a school leader.
B.To encourage school leaders to use the power of poetry in school leadership.
C.To explain how poetry can be used in our daily life.
D.To show readers that poetry is really powerful.

Many people believe that classical music has nothing to do with young people today. However, this issue(问题) frequently causes heated debate.
Some people say that classical music is associated only with old people. For example, if you look at the audience at a classical concert, the majority is over the age of fifty.
Others say it is more popular than we first imagine. Many young people listen to classical music without realizing it. It is often used in films and advertisements. For example, a famous piece of classical music was used as the theme music for the 1990 World Cup. Not many people could have given its name, but millions enjoyed it.
Also, some people point out that young people produce new music based on classical ideas: for example, it is said that rap(说唱) music was invented by a classical musician in 1912, but it is now used by young people in pop music.
However, young people point to the fact that classical music has been outstripped(超越) by technology. To play a classical instrument, such as a violin, you need to study hard and practice for hours. Nowadays, you don’t need to get aching arms from practicing. A teenager can write and make music using a computer program in the comfort of their own bedroom.
A final point to bear in mind is that the term "classical music" is used to refer to a great variety of music, from jazz to pieces for large orchestras. This makes it even more difficult to say whether classical music is relevant(与…相关) to young people.
So, it may be only a minority of young people who play classical instruments, but when it comes to enjoying classical music, it depends on the piece of music. It may be more relevant to young people in the modern world than they realize!
