How do you know if your home is an easy aim for thefts(偷窃)? Around the holidays, many families don’t consider taking proper measures to prevent their homes from suffering holiday thefts. With just a few simple steps, you can better make sure of the safety of your home during all of the holiday celebrations. Here are a few tips for making it difficult to tell you are away from home.
● Either have a trusted neighbor pick up your mail and newspapers, or tell your mailperson to hold your mail until you return. Nothing says “Hey, we are not home!” like when your postbox is filled with all kinds of mails and you have many different newspapers in your driveway.
● Set several different lights in your house on random timers (随机定时器)。Don’t leave your outdoor lights on all the time. Instead, put your outside lights on timers to be on during the nights. If an outdoor light remains on for days at a time, it means that nobody is home to turn it off.
● If you have pets that you are not taking with you on vacation, leave them with a friend, rather than having someone come into your house every day to take care of them. When thefts see a neighbor or friend entering your house every day, they will know you are not home.
● Close all your curtains when you leave town. This is effective to deter possible thefts, as no one can see what is in your house. If they don’t know what there is to take, then the risk is even greater for them to break in.

It’s said that you don’t know a man until you walk a mile in his shoes. And you also don’t know what it’s like for older people to travel until you accompany one on a trip.
After flying with my elderly father from Washington, D.C. to L.A. in July, I began to realize that a companion has important tasks that can make a journey easier for older people. I booked non-stop tickets on JetBlue to avoid tiring, confusing connections, and we flew directly into small, manageable Long Beach Airport. Even though my father could walk, I arranged with the airline for wheelchair assistance, which meant we got on board first.
When I took him back to the airport for his return flight to Washington, I got permission from JetBlue to wait with him at the gate instead of saying goodbye at the security checkpoint. I wished he’d had a first-class seat and access to a comfortable airline club. Better yet, I wish I had flown with him both ways. As I watched the attendant wheel him to the lift that took him from the tarmac(飞机跑道)to the plane, I felt like an anxious mom sending her child to school for the first time.
Things can go awry on a plane trip. And then there is the horrifying story about Joe and Margie. When they landed at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, a wheelchair attendant met them to help with a connection. But somehow Margie, who had Alzheimer’s disease, disappeared.
I didn’t need to worry about my father wandering away. At 82, his mind was sharper than mine. But his hearing was poor, so I worried about what would happen if he missed an important announcement. Fortunately, everything went just fine. Careful planning made the trip successful.
Next time I travel with a senior, I’ll know better. I hope there will be a next time.
1.Why did the man buy nonstop tickets?
A. His father was tired of flights.
B. He had important tasks to do.
C. He cared about his father.
D. His schedule was tight.
2.How did the author feel when seeing his father off?
A. Disappointed. B. Delighted.
C. Worried. D. Sad.
3.What does the underlined part “go awry” probably mean?
A. be amused. B. carry on as usual.
C. live up to one’s expectation. D. be away from the correct course.
4.What can we learn from the passage?
A. Taking a trip does great good to seniors.
B. It is a pleasant experience to travel with seniors.
C. To have a long journey with seniors is unpractical.
D. A good arrangement ensures seniors to take a nice trip.

When your pet is sick, you know it needs medication. But pets, like babies, don't know the pill you want them to take will help them.____ 1.____ Here are some tips to help get your pet to take liquid medicine.
______2.______If the answer is yes, then your easiest path is to mix it with canned food. First give your hungry pet a small amount of canned food without the medication. It's important that the pet nibbles (一点一点地吃) at the food and sees that there's nothing wrong. Next, while the pet is still hungry, mix the medication in a small amount food and present it. Repeat as necessary to get the entire dose (剂量) down.______ 3.__ If the pet decides not to finish the meal, the dose will be wasted.
If the chemist says the medication cannot be taken with food, you need a syringe (注射器) or a dropper (滴管) to get the liquid down your pet's throat. _______4.________Keep a cheerful tone in your voice so the pet doesn't sense your stress or hesitation. Position your pet where it cannot run away, perhaps having a dog sit with his back against a wall or chair ---- or a cat on your lap. ____5.______ Use your other hand to insert the syringe or dropper between the cheek and back teeth. Slowly squeeze the medication so the pet won't choke. Try to keep your pet's mouth closed for approximately 30 seconds until you see it has swallowed. If your pet is being obstinate (倔强的) , stroke (抚摸) its throat gently or blow on the face.
Be sure you end the session with praise and perhaps a treat so your pet will not associate medication with a bad experience.
A. Before you call your pet in, be sure to have the medication and any other materials you’ll need ready.
B. Once the pet is in position, use one hand to gently open the pet's mouth from above, tilting back the head slightly.
C. Ask the vet if the liquid medication can be given with food.
D. You should know the reason why the pet refuses to take medicine.
E. Never mix the medication with the full meal.
F. They just know it smells funny and they don't want it.
G. Don't force your pet to swallow all the medicine.
