I'm a speaker and give hundreds of speeches every year. I spoke about appreciation last month and I used this quote by Albert Schweitzer: " Sometimes our light goes out but is blown again into flame by meeting with another human being. Each of us should express the deepest thanks to those who have relighted this inner(内心的) light
I asked my audiences to shut their eyes and think about someone who, at some time in their lives, has relighted their inner light. Then I left the room in silence for several minutes. It was always a meaningful experience as they remembered the joy they felt from another person
One day, a gentleman came up to talk with me and thanked me for creating a new awareness(意识)in him. He said he thought of his eighth-grade history teacher because she was everyone's favorite teacher and had truly made a difference in all of their lives. After several days, the gentleman found his history teacher and he wrote to her. The following week he received this letter
Dear John
You will never know how much your letter meant to me. I am 83 years old, and I am living all alone in one room. My friends are all gone. My family’s gone. I taught 50 years and yours is the first "thank you" letter I have ever gotten from a student. Sometimes I wonder what I did with my life. I will read and reread your letter until the day I die
The gentleman was sad, "She is always the one we talk about when we have a get-together. She is everyone's favorite teacher-- we love her! But no one had ever told her until she received my letter.
1.Why did the author use Albert Schweitzers words in his speech?
A. To draw the attention of the audiences B. To show his honor to Albert Schweitzer
C. To show the importance of appreciation D. To prove humans should help each other.
2.Why did the gentleman come up to the author?
A. To ask questions B. To thank the author
C. To try to find his history teacher D. To introduce his history teacher to him.
3.What does the teacher's letter show?
A. We should never forget our teachers B. Teachers usually miss their students
C. Expressing thanks may light up others' life D. It's never too late to show thanks to others
4.Why was the gentleman sad after receiving his teacher's letter?
A. No one loved the teacher B. He missed his teacher very much
C. His teacher lost many loved ones D. He didn't thank his teacher in time

Hundreds of great books are published in America every year. And every year, editors, critics and other readers try to choose a list of favorites.
A few books showed up on list after list of the best fiction from this year. One of them was Ann Patchett's State of Wonder. Publishers Weekly described the novel as one "readers will hate to see end." The story centers on a drug researcher from Minnesota named Maria Singh. She travels to Brazil to investigate the death of a co-worker. Her search takes her deep into the Amazon area and danger. But she also goes deep into her own soul for a close look at who she is, what she has lost in her life and how she wants the future to look. Ann Patchett lives in Tennesee. She told Publishers Weekly magazine that the state is dense and leafy, like the Amazon jungle. She visited that area while doing research for the novel.
Chad Harbach's name was also all over the critics' best lists this year for his first book, The Art of Fielding. The New Yorker magazine praised the novel for the easy way it joins a love of baseball with a love of literature. The book is about a college baseball star. He suffers a mental crisis and begins to fail on the playing field as a result. But the book is about much more than the sport of baseball. It also is a story of love, loss, friendship and growing up. Chad Harbach says his own upbringing influenced the book.
The Marriage Plot also got a lot of attention this year. It is the third book from Pulitzer Prize winner Jeffrey Eugenides. He spent almost ten years writing it. Every year, hundreds of millions of Monarch Butterflies (黑脉金斑蝶) from Canada and the United States journey as far as 2, 500 miles to the forests of Michoacan, Mexico, a place which has the world’s largest insect migration. It’s such a breathtaking sight, but as always, human greed is threatening to destroy it.
The Monarch Butterflies start to arrive in Michoacan in late October to make their winter home in the trees high up in the mountains of the natural reserve. Once there, they gather together in large masses. These masses often become so heavy that they cause tree branches to bend or even break. But there’s a purpose of all these massing - it allows the butterflies to survive in the low nighttime temperatures at these high altitudes.
The Michoacan Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary (保护区) is most impressive during the months of February and March, just before the winged insects begin their long journey home.
Mexico’s Butterfly Forest is a shelter protected by law, and one of the country’s most popular sights, but that hasn’t stopped people from slowly but steadily destroying it.
Illegal woodcutting in the heart of the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve has been a longstanding problem, but criminals are rarely brought to justice. They are often set free after paying some money.
Just last month, an even greater threat rose in Michoacan’s butterfly home. The country’s largest mining corporation gained the right to reopen an old mine in the heart of the monarch reserve. Experts believe that if the mine is reopened, it will likely spell the end of this magical place.
And as if all this wasn’t bad enough, the increasing use of herbicides (除草剂) in the American corn belt has led to the decrease of a plant which is essential to the monarchs’ development from egg into butterfly.
1.When do the Monarch Butterflies begin to fly back to Canada?
A.In January. B.After March. C.In October. D.In December.
2.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The weather. B.The reserve. C.The massing. D.The forest.
3.What can we know about the protection of Monarch Butterflies in Mexico?
A.It is very satisfying.
B.It should be strengthened.
C.It cost the government a lot.
D.It has saved many butterflies.
4.What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A.Monarch Butterflies have a worrying future.
B.America has many mines waiting for exploration.
C.Monarch Butterflies live in the centre of an old mine.
D.The use of herbicides will let Monarch Butterflies lay fewer eggs.

Every year there are hundreds of earthquakes in different parts of the world. In Sept.1923, Tokyo and Yokohama were both destroyed by an earthquake and the fires that followed it. They had to be completely rebuilt. One of the most serious earthquakes was in China’s Shanxi Province in 1556. It killed almost one million people.
We measure an earthquake’s strength on the Richter scale. The Richter scale was introduced in 1935 in Southern California in the USA. It measures earthquakes on a scale of one to ten. Any earthquake measuring five or more is usually serious.
The earth’s crust (地壳) is made up of layers of rock called plates. As these plates move, they sometimes crash against each other, causing the crust to quake. In cities such as Tokyo, where small quakes happen quite often, many modern buildings are designed to be flexible so when the earth moves, they move with it.
Earthquakes can also break up gas or oil pipes. This can cause fires to break out, which can do as much damage as the earthquake itself.
Another effect of earthquakes is tsunamis (海啸). These are huge waves created by earthquakes beneath the sea. They can be many meters high and cause great damage to coastal towns and cities.
China, Japan, Russia and the USA have the highest occurrence (发生) of earthquakes in the world.
