Too many people want others to be friends, but they don’t give friendship back. That is why some friendships don’t last long. To have a friend, you must learn to be one. You must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules:be honest;be generous;be understanding.
Honesty is where a good friend starts. Friends must be able to trust one another. If you do not tell the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out that you haven’t been honest, you may lose your friend’s trust. Good friends always count on one another to speak and act honestly.
Generosity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You do not have to give your lunch money or your clothes of course. Instead you have to learn how to share things you enjoy, like your hobbies and your interests. Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings. These can be very valuable to a friend. They tell your friend what is important to you. By sharing them, you help your friend know better.
Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and help with a problem. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. Turning to a friend can be the first step in solving the problem. So a friend must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend’s place so you can understand the problem better.
No two friendships are ever exactly alike. But true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep your friends, you must practice honesty, generosity, and understanding.

Playing is serious business for children. In fact, it's what they do best! Ask them why they do it, and kids will probably say,"Because it's fun!" But it's much more than that. It's also good for them.
Studies show that from birth babies begin learning through play. They use their five senses to get know their new world. Touching allows them to discover how different things feel. Brightly colored toys and clothing help develop a baby's sense of sight.
When small children choose which toy to play with, they begin developing their abilities in making decisions.
Children love toys that allow them to use their imagination. Sometimes an empty box is more fun than a high-tech toy. That's because a box can become anything a child imagines it to be.
Crayons, paints and Play-Doh(彩色塑泥) are also good because they allow children to create. Traditional building blocks teach important pre-math skills like problem-solving.
Playing doesn't become any less important once children start school. Many valuable lessons about life are learned on the school playground. Kids learn how to share, take turns and play by the rules.

Do you have a goal for life? What's it? Do you want to become a writer, singer or just become a rich person?
A recent survey shows that in modern society, most people pick up practical goals, such as “earning money to buy a house and a car”, “to improve one's life quality”, “finding a good job”.
Wang You worked in a small firm (商行) in Nanjing. The job was good and he didn't have to work for extra hours. However, he felt the work was not exciting at all and the life was boring. So he gave up his job and went to Beijing in February, 2007. When he arrived in Beijing, he set his new goal as finding a good job.
Nowadays more and more people want to live a better life. This fact shows that the society is making progress and people's life goals have become more practical. One researcher says, “Everybody has his/her own life goal, which will be surely different from people to people. If one is poor, one's life goal will be to earn more money; if one doesn't have a diploma, studying hard to get a diploma will become his life goal; and if one doesn't have love, his life goal will be to look for it. When young people in the United States gather for fun, there is a good chance that they will soon be dancing. If there are no musicians, they will play records. If there are no records, some one is certain to have a radio. One way or another there will be dancing.
The ways that boys and girls dance will often change every year or two. You may hear them say that the very latest steps are “in,’ while last year’s step are ‘out.’ Each boy and girl takes pride in learning newest things. They feel that this is important to remaining popular with their friends.
Years ago the dances of young people were not very different from those of their parents, but high school and college students of today have created their own music and have invented their own dances, thanks to people like Chubby Checker, the Beatles, and Elvis Presley. These musicians helped to make popular an exciting new kind of music that people began to dance to in a different way.
In the late 1950s Chubby Checker started a dance that he called the “twist.” The twist, like so many new dances, was lively, and people who performed it used a lot of energy. The word chubby means “a little bit fat,” which is why this singer and dancer called himself Chubby.
After demonstrating his new dance hundreds of times, however, Chubby was no longer chubby. This is one of the advantages. Even if older people do not like the new dances, they must agree that people get much more exercise from modern dances than they ever got from a waltz.

Too often young people get themselves employed quite by accident, not knowing whether there will be opportunities for promotion (晋升), happiness and security. As a result, they are employed in doing jobs that afford them little or no satisfaction.
Our school leavers face so much competition that they seldom care what they do as long as they can earn a living. Some stay long at a job and learn to like it; others leave one for another looking for something to suit them. The young graduates leave the university with the dream of looking for jobs that offer a salary up to their expectation.
Very few go out into the world knowing exactly what they want and the limits of their own abilities. The cause behind all this confusion is that there has never been a proper vocational(职业的) guidance in our educational institutions. Nearly all the graduates feel their way in the dark. Their chief concern is the salary. They never bother to think whether they are suited for the job or, even more important, whether the job suits them. Having a job is more than merely providing one and one’ s dependants with daily bread and some money for leisure and entertainment. It sets a pattern of life and, in many ways, determines a person ’s social status in life and selection of friends, leisure and interest.
In choosing a profession, one should first consider which type of work will suit his or her interest. Nothing is sadder than taking on a job in which one has no interest, for it will not only ruin one’ s talents but also discourage one’ s desire to succeed in life.

Thanksgiving Day
Many people believe Thanksgiving is a Western holiday, but in fact, it is only an American holiday held every fourth Thursday of November although Canada holds their own unique Thanksgiving on the second Monday of October.
The pattern of the Thanksgiving celebration has never changed through the years. The big family dinner is planned months ahead. Some of the family will have to travel by air and others will make long motor trips with the children. Sons and daughters away at college use their four-day holiday to go home, and employees take extra days from their work so as to be able to make the trip for the annual reunion. The Thanks-giving dinner menu today is somewhat the same as it was on Thanksgiving Day in 1863. On the dinner table, people will find apples, oranges, chestnuts and grapes. There will be pudding (布丁), mince(肉末)pie, other varieties of food and squash(鲜果汁). The rest and most attractive among them are roast turkey and pumpkin pie. They have been the most traditional and favorite food on Thanksgiving Day throughout the years.
In true Thanksgiving spirit the family circle is often enlarged to include friends known to be alone, foreign visitors, or servicemen away from home. Orphans, the aged and the homeless also have the traditional turkey dinner, provided either by some charitable (慈善的) individual or a church group.
