On the day of college graduation, I told my friends and family the news:I was leaving the country I had lived in since childhood. “I just need a change,”I told them, but there was more. I was running from heartbreak. My relationship with the United States is the toughest one I have ever had, as a country I loved and believed in did not love me back.
Back in the 90’s, my mother brought me from our home in the Caribbean islands to the U.S.when I was 4 years old. She worked as a live-in nanny(保姆)for two years, playing mommy for white kids whose parents had better things to do. She didn’t believe that nanny meant maid, and did whatever was asked of her. She was thirsty to embrace her American dream, hoping that her children would be educated and she might have nannies of her own.
Those were our path to get a “good education.”When the neighborhoods with quality schools became too expensive for my mom to afford as a single parent, we went across the United States with Great Schools. net as our compass: New Jersey, elementary school; Texas, middle school; Florida, high school; New York City, private university
For a long time I survived by covering myself in all kinds of labels so that people would ignore the color of my skin, yet I existed on the edge of ugly, ignorant and uncultured. “Black people don’t really know how to swim, “a white lady told me when I worked as a swim instructor at my neighborhood’s pool. “The black children don’t like to read very much, “I overheard one librarian discussing with another while l sat down reading a book a couple feet away.
I was never able to make America my home. When I stripped myself of the labels painfully one by one, beneath them there is a wounded colored woman who refuses to be faceless anymore. My face may be disgusting to some since it bears proof that race continues to be a problem. My hope is that it will force Americans to re-examine their “post-racial” beliefs.
1.What was the real reason that made the author leave the United States?
A. It couldn’t provide her with good education.
B. She just needed a challenge in her way of life.
C. The way she was treated there broke her heart.
D. She was tired of living in a strange country.
2.What can we infer about the author’s mother from Paragraphs 2 and 3 ?
A. She sacrificed a lot to live a better life in America.
B. She was quite content to work as a live-in nanny.
C. She was particular about the schools her daughter attended.
D. She liked visiting all kinds of schools with the author.
3.The author gives two examples in Paragraph 4 to show that_____ .
A. how ignorant and uncultured many people are in US
B. she needed to cover herself in all kinds of labels
C. the race problem is still serious in the United States
D. black children often have no interest in reading books
4.The author’s attitude towards the United States on race problem is_____ .
A. supportive
B. positive
C. neutral
D. negative

The phrase “live, love and laugh” was one my cousin Roger lived by every day of his life. Even in his sickness, he found the positive in what some would see as a negative situation. He enjoyed life. He loved to laugh and most importantly, he lived life to the absolute fullest. He loved to travel, learning new things about different people and their culture.
Roger was born and raised in Alabama, and he then moved to Buffalo, New York where he lived for many, many years until he relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, his final resting place.
Whether his travels were long visits or short visits, large cities or small towns, his favorite souvenir item was T-shirt. Everywhere he went he would buy a T-shirt to remind him of his travels. Every T-shirt he owned had a story behind it that he would share with others.
As long as he was laughing, living and traveling, he was happy. He loved everybody he came in contact with and everybody loved him. The old saying, “He never met a stranger”, definitely applied to Roger and his life.
His last few years of life were in and out of the hospital at least 10~15 days a month, sometimes more. Two weeks before he passed away, I spoke with him on the phone, and even then he managed to tell jokes about life.
I know he left this world happily; he refused to allow anything or anyone to hold him down, even his severe illnesses. He was definitely a model to look up when it comes to not allowing any situation to keep you from moving forward in life.
I will forever miss his smile and his love for life. My cousin Roger knew the true meaning of the phrase “live, love and laugh”.
1.The author believes that Roger .

John was part of my childhood growing up in the 1970s and a link to sunny, fun-filled days spent on the beach at Bangor in Northern Ireland where we went for our summer holidays. To many, he was a mystery. Every afternoon John would wander to the end of the pier (码头) where he fed the seagulls and delighted in the sound of their excited cries as they flew around his head.
Often I asked my family questions regarding John. Eventually I gave up as no one could tell me anything about him. As I grew up, my visits to the beach became less frequent, and my memories of John buried in a child’s imagination.
Last year memories came flooding back as I walked along the coastline, where I noticed a lady feeding the seagulls on the pier, and I decided to introduce myself. Then I came to know that the lady was John’s daughter, and after John left this world she carried out the ritual (惯例), which had held such importance for her father.
In some strange way I felt we shared a bond, each needing to remember. In return, Lucy told me of John’s life, his days in the British Navy (海军) during World War I and how he almost lost hope when his ship was attacked by a German U-boat in the North Sea and he found himself in a lifeboat with five others.
Close to death, he thought he heard the sound of wings. He put up his hands, only to catch a seagull that had landed on the side of the boat. The seagull saved the lives of the six men as it was used to catch fish, which kept them alive until they reached land. This period of John’s life was one he never talked about. But the ritual he first performed as a young man remained a part of him until he died.
Now I visit Lucy as often as I can, just to chat or very often walk along the beach to the pier end. We enjoy the comfortable silence, each lost in special memories.
1.Seeing John feeding the seagulls, the author might feel _____.
A. proud B. worried
C. curious D. guilty
2. Why did the author introduce herself to the lady?
A. She wanted to make more friends.
B. She was also fond of feeding seagulls.
C. She was told the lady was John’s daughter.
D. She was attracted by what the lady was doing.
3. We can infer from the text that John _____.
A. once served in both World Wars
B. was a man with a grateful heart
C. spent his childhood in Bangor
D. joined the navy in the 1970s
4.What does the author mainly tell us in the text?
A. She expressed her thanks to a seagull that saved her life.
B. She told us the story of how she made friends with a lady.
C. She shared with us her memories of a man who fed seagulls.
D. She talked about her childhood spent on the beach at Bangor.
