For the last 10 years, job listing site CareerBuilder has put out a list called “The Most Unbelievable Excuses for Calling in Sick.” For example, an employee said he couldn’t come in because his false teeth flew out the window while he was driving down the highway. The excuses were gathered through a survey that ran among 3,000 workers and 2,000 hiring managers.
The list is entertaining but there is a more serious issue hidden in this story. Federal law does not require private employers to give any paid sick leave, making the US the only one of the world’s wealthiest nations that doesn’t guarantee workers this right. Since 2006, cities and states have been adopting their own paid sick leave laws. California, Washington. DC and 13 cities including New York now require many employers to provide some sort of paid sick leave. But according to the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, 39% of private employees still have no access to paid days off. In the CareerBuilder survey, 38% of respondents said they go to work when they’re sick because they can’t afford to miss a day’s pay. The survey also shows that workers are taking a risk when they come up with far-fetched excuses. Nearly one in five employers says they have fired an employee for calling in sick with a fake excuse. If you’re spending the day at the beach while pretending to be ill, don’t post about it on Facebook. Nearly one in four employers (24%) has caught an employee lying about being sick by checking social media.
The motto of this story: If you really are sick, don’t come to work and spread your bacteria around the office. But if you just want to stay home, go with “I’m running a fever.” rather than one of these ridiculous excuses.
1.The underlined word “far-fetched” in Paragraph 2 probably means ______.
A. impossible to find B. likely to be true
C. difficult to believe D. easy to believe
2.What problem is exposed in the survey?
A. Many employees have no access to paid sick leave.
B. Private employers make their workers work extra hours.
C. Some employees are not satisfied with their boss.
D. Private employers sometimes break the Federal law.
3.An employee will run the risk of being fired if he ______.
A. asks for sick leave
B. lies about being sick
C. posts his holiday on Facebook
D. spreads bacteria around the office
4.What will the author present following the last paragraph?
A. A list of survey data.
B. A list of serious issues.
C. A list of reasonable facts.
D. A list of ridiculous excuses.

Unknown to most Facebook users, the social network actually offers a lot of privacy controls and security features which can help you lock your account, so you can speak freely. If it’s used properly, you’ll never have to worry about whether you will have to “friend” your boss or your mom. You can friend anyone you want while staying comfortable in the knowledge that not everyone gets to see everything you post.
The problem with carrying out these privacy options is that they’re just too confusing for most non-tech clever people to handle. And often, most people don’t want to bother to take the time to learn. To simplify the process, we’re offering one easy step you can take today to help make your Facebook experience safer, more secure, and more private.
Just make “Friend Lists”. Yes, it will take some time, especially if you’re connected to a couple of hundred friends already. But this step, while not the quickest, is fairly simple. And it will be one of the most useful things you can do on Facebook.
Friend lists, as the name suggests, are lists for classifying your friends into various groups. The nice thing about this feature is that once you set these lists up, you won’t have to do it again. We suggest that you put your work colleagues and professional acquaintances into a friend list named “Work”, personal friends you’re not very close with into a list called “Acquaintances”, and people you’re related to into a list called “Family”. Those three main categories will separate out the groups of “friends” who you may want to hide some information from.
To create a friend list, click on “Friends” at the top of the Facebook homepage. In the left-hand column, click “Friends” again under the “Lists” section. Now you’ll see a button at the top that says “Create New List”. Click it. In the pop-up that appears, you can name your list and pick members. If you’ve ever shared an application with your friends, the process of doing this will be very familiar.
When you’ve finished making lists, you’ll be able to use them when selecting who can see what (or who can’t!) when configuring (配置) the security settings described below.
1.What function isn’t understood by most people on Facebook?
A. Surfing the Internet.
B. Setting safety protection.
C. Sharing personal information.
D. Making foreign friends.
2.What can we learn about Facebook according to the text?
A. Its process of privacy-setting is too complex.
B. It displays everything people post.
C. It lacks privacy controls and security features.
D. Its post is designed for technical people.
3.What advantage can we get from making friend lists?
A. We can avoid our bosses adding us as friends.
B. We can share applications with friends.
C. We can separate acquaintances from family.
D. We can hide different information from different friends.

Close your eyes and picture the city of Paris. Now imagine the city without its most famous landmark:the Eiffel Tower.
The unthinkable almost happened.
When French engineer Gustave Eiffel built this tower for the Paris World’s Fair of 1889,it was controversial. The iron structure contrasted(对比)sharply with the historic stone buildings of Paris.Eiffel’s four-legged iron archway was supposed to last only 20 years. That’s when Eiffel’s permit to operate the building would expire(过期)and the city could choose to tear it down.
Yet from the beginning.Eiffel had a strategy to save his building. If the Tower was linked to important research,he reasoned,no one would dare to take it down.So he would make it a grand laboratory for science.
Scientific research began just one day after the Tower opened to the public on May 6,1889.Eiffel installed a weather station on the Tower’s third(and highest)floor. He connected instruments by wire to the French weather bureau in Paris. With these,he measured wind speed and air pressure.
In 1903,still worried that his building might be torn down,Eiffel got a clever idea.He asked the French military to conduct its own research on radio communications at the Tower. He even paid the army’s costs.
French army captain Gustave Ferrié worked from a little wooden house at the base of the Tower's southern pillar. From there,he made radio contact with forts around Paris.Convinced of the importance of radio communications, the army set up a permanent radio station at the Tower. In 1910,the city of Paris renewed the structure’s permit for another 70 years.
This year marks the iconic structure’s 125th birthday.Over the years, research conducted there has brought dramatic and unexpected payoffs.During World War I,for instance, the French army used the Tower as a giant ear to receive radio messages. It even led to the arrest of one of the war's most famous spies.

One of the world's richest men has taken a close interest in one of man’s most basic functions: visiting the toilet.Bill Gates’s charitable organization, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, is looking for inventors to design the loo of the future, which, they hope, would improve sanitation for millions of people around the world.
So, what's wrong with the traditional flush toilet? Firstly, it wastes a huge amount of potential drinking water.Secondly, they are more likely to cause pollution. This is a real problem in many areas of the developing world, where, according to United Nations estimates, unsafe sanitation causes half of all hospitalizations.Younger people are particularly at risk.Illnesses which cause diarrhea are responsible for the deaths of about 1.5 million children a year. Finally, standard lavatories simply aren’t practical in remote areas.
The challenge set by Bill Gates was to come up with a latrine which works without running water, electricity or aseptic tank(化粪池).It also needed to operate for less than 5 cents.28 designs were displayed at the recent Reinvent the Toilet Fair in Seattle, USA.Among them was one which turned human waste into electricity using microwaves, another which converted human waste into charcoal, and yet another which used urine for flushing.
But the winner was a solar-powered design which generated hydrogen gas and electricity. The team from the California Institute of Technology(CIT)picked up a prize of $ 100,000.
But clearly Bill Gates doesn’t feel he’s flushing money down the toilet. After the Seattle event he said, “We, couldn’t be happier with the response we’ve gotten,” Gates has even pledged $370m more to the future toilet project. They hope to field test more prototypes over the next three years.
1.Why is Bill Gates paying people to invent new toilets?
A.Because he wants to test people’s sense of creativity.
B.Because he wants to improve sanitation for many people.
C.Because he thinks the traditional ones are out of fashion.
D.Because he can’t design this kind of things himself.
2.Which of the following is NOT a problem with the traditional flush toilet?
A.They waste too much water.
