We don’t know how different our life in the future. We can only try to imagine it.
At first we think about human relationship. In the year 2050, we will use computers almost every day, we will be making new friends through the Internet--- even our husbands or wives will be met in this way. It will be much faster and easier for us. On the other hand, our relationships with people won’t be as important as they are today--- we will feel a little lonely.
Computers will also help us in many other activities in 2050. For example, they will be used by the children at school to make their learning easier. In addition, there will be more other machines which will play a similar role as computers, like robots which will do the housework for us.
Spending holidays will also be completely different. Traveling to other planets or to the moon will be available for everyone. Means of transport will, of course, change, too. We will be using solar-powered cars, which will be much environmentally friendly.
We could expect that the faster economic development would lead to a more polluted environment. But it isn’t true. We will pay more attention to protecting the environment. Scientists will probably find cures for many dangerous diseases, like cancer or AIDS. Therefore, our surroundings as well as health will be in better condition.
Although we cannot predict the exact changes which will be made in the world, we often think about them. We worry about our and our children’s future; we have expectation, hopes as well as fears. But I think we should be rather sanguine about our future. We should be happy and believe good things will happen.
1.The underlined word “sanguine” in the last paragraph most probably means __________.
A. disappointed B. surprised
C. curious D. optimistic
2.According to the passage, which of the following will happen in 2050?
A. It will not be difficult for people to travel to other plants.
B. Our environment will be much polluted with a growing number of cars.
C. The way of spending holidays will be the same as that of today
D. The relationship between people will be more important than today.
3.The third paragraph mainly tells__________.
A. that computers will do all the things for human being
B. how people will use robots to do housework.
C. that machines like computer and robots will help people a lot.
D. how people will use computer to communicate with each other.
4.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. What high technology will appear in the year 2050.
B. What our life will be like in the year 2050.
C. How people will communicate in the year 2050.
D. How people will travel and spend their holidays in the year 2050.

Can you imagine learning by playing games. To be sure, only children experienced some things differently from those with sisters and brothers. Many feel more pressure to succeed. They also tend to look only to their parents as role models in the absence of brothers and sisters.
In India, 10-year-old Saviraj Sankpal founded a support group for the tiny minority of only children. Among other things, the group does volunteer work to counter (or be against) the myth that they are not responsible. "People think we're treated too kindly and ruined," says Sankpal, a computer engineering student. "But I'd like to remind them how lonely it can get."
Most only children, however, say they wish for sisters or brothers only when it comes to caring for aging, unhealthy parents. Britain's David Emerson, coauthor of the book The Only Child, says that such a person bears terrible burden in having to make all the decisions alone. Emerson knows from experience: After his father died, he chose to move his elderly mother from their family home, where she was vulnerable to (or easy to be attacked by) house breakers, to a new one with more security." The move was quite hard on her, and she might feel that I pushed her into it," he says,". After all, I am left with that responsibility."
In the future, more and more only children will likely face similar choices. With working mothers increasing, many families are finding they simply don't have the time, money or energy to have more than one child. As only children become common, perhaps the world will realize that the Charge made against them is unjust.
1.It can be inferred from the passage that the author's attitude towards only children is _______.
A. ironic B. objective C. unfriendly D. unjust
2.It can be inferred from the passage that only children's parents should ___________.
A. found a support group for their only children
B. do volunteer work to help their only children
C. let their only children make all the decisions alone
D. set good examples for their only children
3.Emerson decided to move his elderly mother to a new house because he ___________.
A. is the only one who cares about her
B. doesn't want to leave her alone
C. wants to share the responsibility with her
D. is worried about her safety
4.It is quite usual now for a working mother to ____________.
A. spend all her time and money on her only child
B. be responsible for bringing up her only child
C. have and bring up only one child
D. devote all her energy to her job
5.The main idea of the passage is that ________.
A. only children are ruined and irresponsible
B. only children have to face many challenges
C. most only children want to have brothers and sisters
D. most only children share their responsibility with their parents

There are a lot of differences in life in the US that you can only learn by living here. However, we will try to introduce you to some of the more important cultural differences.
Personal Space
When two people are talking to each other, they tend to stand a distance apart. Each person has an invisible boundary (界限) around their body into which other people may not come.
Interestingly, the average personal distance varies from culture to culture. Americans tend to require more personal space than in other cultures. So if you try to get too close to an American during your conversation, he or she will feel that you are “in their face” and will try to back away.
Try to avoid physical contact while you are speaking, since this may also lead to discomfort.
Tipping(小费)
Restaurants do not include a service charge in the bill, so you should tip the waiter 15% of the total bill. If service is slow or particular bad, some Americans will tip only 10%. If service is particularly good, it is appropriate to tip 20%. If service is so bad that you will never eat in the restaurant again, leave two cents. It tells the waiter that you haven’t forgotten to leave a tip. Tipping is only appropriate in restaurants which offer table service. You do not tip the cashier in a fast food restaurant.
Gestures
To wave goodbye or hello to someone, raise your hand and wave it from side to side, not front to back. Wave the whole hand, not just the fingers. Waving the hand front to back or the fingers up and down means “no”, “stop”, or “go away’. Holding your hand up with the palm facing forward but no movement means “stop”.
If you want to point at an object, extend the index finger and use it to point at the object. It is not polite to point at people.
Although showing your fist with the thumb up or your open hand with the tips of the thumb and index finger together forming an “O” means “OK”, these are stereotypes (老套). Americans understand these gestures, but they are mainly used by actors in movies, not in real life.
1. If an American to whom you are speaking backs away a little, you’d better __________.
A. not try to close the gap B. stop talking with him or her
C. back away too D. ask him or her what happened
2.Which of the following statements is TRUE when you eat out in the US?
A. The tip always ranges from 10% to 20% of the total bill.
B. You needn’t leave a tip if you will never eat in the restaurant.
C. It’s unnecessary to tip the waiter in a restaurant.
D. Tipping is not necessary in fast food restaurants.
3.Which of the following gestures is not used in Americans’ daily life?
A B. C. D.
.
4.We can learn from the passage that in the US ___________________.
A. it’s natural to touch each other in a conversation.
B. it’s polite to leave a tip though the service is bad.
C. there is only one gesture meaning “stop”.
D. Americans use the same gesture to point at people and objects.
