The British are known for their sense of humour. However, it is often difficult for foreigners to understand their jokes. The main point to remember is that the British often use understatement.
Understatement means saying less than you think or feel. For example, if someone gets very wet in a shower of rain, he might say, "It's a little damp(潮湿的)outside.”Or, if someone is very impolite and shouts at another person, someone else might say, "She isn't exactly friendly." Understatement is often used in unpleasant situation or to make another person look silly. Understatement plays an important part in British humour.
Another key to understanding British humour is that the British like to make fun of themselves as well as others. They often laugh about the silly and unpleasant things that happen to our everyday life when someone accidentally falls over in the street. They also like to make jokes about people from different classes of society. They like to make jokes about their accents, the way they dress and the way they behave. What's more, the British love to watch comedies about people who do not know how to behave in society. The comedy series Mr. Bean is a good example of this kind of humour. Mr. Bean is the character created by British actor Rowan Atkinson in 1990.
Mr. Bean doesn't talk often, and instead he uses his body movements and facial expressions to make people laugh. Perhaps what makes Mr. Bean so funny is that he does things that adults in the real world cannot do. Mr. Bean is popular in many countries around the world because you do not have to speak English to understand the humour. Because of this, many people have become familiar with the British sense of humour.
1.Why is it difficult for foreigners to understand British jokes?

Most people agree that it’s important to have a sense of humour. Having the ability to laugh can help one overcome anxiety, and make better decisions in difficult situations. People with a well-developed sense of humour appear to be happier, and some are healthier as well. This suggests that having a sense of humour is good for you. Humourless people may find themselves being treated as a fool, and become anxious and upset.
A sense of humour also plays an important role in human relationships. However, not everyone has a sense of humour. People with developmental disabilities (发展性能力丧失) can sometimes have no sense of humour, or have a very strange one.
A number of factors affect a person’s sense of humour, with the age probably being the main one. Young children are often highly amused by simple jokes or shows, while teenagers prefer to enjoy the ironic (讽刺的) events. Educational level, culture, and religious faith also affect one’s sense of humour. While Christians, for example, may have a deep appreciation of jokes about the Bible, others may find them disrespectful.
Many people believe that a sense of humour is something that develops on its own, and that you cannot teach someone to understand why jokes, certain comments, situations or events are funny. However, things can be done to enhance one’s sense of humour. Children, for example, benefit from being told jokes and encouraged to laugh, although some children’s jokes might seem rather strange to adults. If you have children, try to encourage them to tell jokes and think about what makes things funny. And it will help them develop a sense of humour.

Camels are well known for their ability to survive the hot and dry conditions of the desert, but a study suggests they once grew well in colder climates. Scientists have found fossilized(化石) parts of a leg bone belonging to a giant camel that lived in the forests of Canada's High Arctic about 3.5million years ago.
The research is published in the journal Nature Communication. Dr. Mike Buckley, an author of the paper from the university of Manchester, said, "What's special about this story is that this is the northernmost evidence of camels. "The area was warmer than today 3.5 million years ago, but the ancient giant camels would have had to face long and bitter winter, with temperatures below freezing. There would have been snowstorms and about six months of darkness.
While scientists have known for some time that camels existed in North America, with the earliest creatures dating to about 45 million years ago, they were astonished to find a species at such a latitude(纬度).
Over the course of three investigations, which began in 2006,researchers from the Canadian Museum of Nature collected 30 pieces of the leg bone from Ellesmere Island in Canada.
Their size suggested that the animal was about 30% larger than today's camels, measuring about 2.7m from foot to shoulder. Despite its size, the researchers believe it would have been similar in appearance, although it probably had a thicker coat to stay warm.
To investigate further, the team took the protein found in the bone from the fossils and modern animals. Dr. Buckley said, "The results tell us that it is a direct ancestor of modern camels. "
He said the findings provided a new insight into the evolution of this animal. "It suggests that many of the adaptations(适应) that we currently think of, in terms of camels being adapted to warm desert-like environments, could have actually originated through adaptation to quite the opposite cold, bitter environments. Camels 'humps(峰)which store fat could help get through an Arctic six-month winter. Their large eyes would have helped them to see in the low light, and their wide, flat feet would have been just as useful for walking on snow as they are on sand,"he explained.
1.What surprised the scientists when they found the giant camel fossils? ___
A.Their size. B.Their shape.
C.Their place. D.Their number.
2.According to the text, the ancient giant camels___.
A.could date to about 45million years ago
B.struggled to survive in severe conditions
C.were the first ancestors of modern camels
D.lived in an environment without light
3.Compared with modern camels, the ancient giant camels___.
A.were much taller
B.had more humps
C.were slightly stronger
D.had thinner coat
4.We can infer from what Dr. Buckley said that___.
A.giant camels had special adaptations for polar life
B.cold environments prevented giant camels developing
C.the cause of the extinction of giant camels remains unknown
D.the hard climates forced giant camels to adapt to warm environments

Few kids today are taught the value of empathy (同感;同情心). It seems so hard for people to show their love and care toward others and to actually understand what they are going through.
As a child I was taught to go out of my way to make someone else happy. My mom would tell me to say at least one kind word to someone else every day. I admit that it wasn’t very easy to do. But as soon as you see the look of gratitude (感激) in that person’s eyes, you just want to do as much as you can.
I had an experience with a guy that people were always making fun of. Every time I saw that happening, I knew in my heart that it was wrong. I decided I would try to be his friend. I started walking with him and introducing him to people around us. I was making him happy by just doing that. And I loved the fact that I was really making a difference in his life.
After a while I realized that he wasn’t the kind of person everybody thought he was. We are still really good friends today. People have almost completely stopped making fun of him. But he is still what he was. What had changed was the attitudes of others toward him.
From this experience I’ve learned to be more loving toward other people. What I did for my friend was so easy. And at the same time I had a lot of fun. So I hope that everyone could say a kind word to someone else at least once a day.
I can promise it will be the best feeling you can ever get.
One kind word could make someone’s day brighter.

A. saying a kind word will give you friendship and fun
B. it is really a hard thing to say a kind word to others

Scientists are making new studies of color and its effects on our health. They have known for a long time that the color of a room or the color of the light in it can affect our feelings and emotions. Many prisons and hospitals have at least one room that is painted pink. Officials have found that light and color can produce physical changes in our bodies.
Professor Falfan worked with a group of 9 disabled children at school in Albert. Two of the children were blind. The other seven had normal sight. The scientists changed the color of the school room, and then looked for changes in blood pressure, heart beat and breathing rate. The effects of color changes were the same for the blind children as for those with normal sight. Their blood pressure dropped from about 120 to 100. Similar changes were reported in heart-beat and the breathing. The children were also calmer and less excited. Then the colors of the room were returned to orange and white. Blood pressure, heart-beat and breathing rate went up and the children became excited again.
Professor Falfan said different colors produce different levels of light energy. He said the differences seem to affect chemicals in the brain that carry messages from nerve to nerve and from nerve to muscle.

China is known for its long history, rich culture, and cute pandas. It’s also known for some of the worst air quality in the world. But the Asian country is now using a natural weapon against air pollution — trees.
In February, China’s government announced plans to cover at least 32,400 square miles with forest. That is about the size of Ireland. Some 60,000 soldiers will take charge of the tree-planting program. Most of the trees will be planted in Hebei Province. That is an area surrounding China’s capital, Beijing.
Huang Wei is an environmentalist who works for Greenpeace East Asia. She is optimistic about the plan. “Trees act as a sink to absorb carbon dioxide and other pollutants,” she said. Carbon dioxide is a gas that traps the Earth’s heat. It contributes to global warming.
Why is China’s air filled with harmful chemicals? It’s because the country relies on coal-fired power plants. When coal is burned, PM2.5 is produced. PM2.5 is a pollutant. It can cause shortness of breath, heart attacks, and even death.
Just two years ago, pollution levels were so high in Beijing that schools and factories had to close. Huang hopes China’s tree-planting plan will reduce the nation’s suffering from air pollution.
The Chinese government is getting help from others in its drive to make the nation greener. Stefano Boeri is an Italian architect and urban planner. He is leading an effort to plant vertical (垂直的) forests in China.
Boeri’s designs have already taken root in the city of Nanjing, China. That’s where the Nan-jing Green Towers are under construction. The building has two towers. Thousands of trees and hanging plants will grow on the balconies and rooftops.
Boeri says his goal is to design buildings that help the environment and improve air quality. He also hopes to encourage a new generation of green architects.
1.What measure is China taking to improve the air quality according to the passage?
A.Planting more tress.
B.Closing the electricity factories.
C.Forbidding people to burn coal.
D.Designing new buildings.
2.What does Huang Wei think of the new plan?
A.Doubtful. B.Uncertain.
C.Promising. D.Ineffective.
3.Which of the following has the closest meaning to “contributes to” in paragraph 3?
A.Adapts to. B.Results in.
C.Refers to. D.Concentrates on.
4.Why is Stefano Boeri invited to China to design buildings?
A.Because his design can keep the polluted air outside the house.
B.Because his buildings are built in forest.
C.Because his design is special with two towers.
D.Because his design is environmentally friendly.
