Those who are in love really know each other's thoughts and can see into one another's ice cream bowl. This truth became so clear to me the other day.

"What?"I was stunned. How in the world did he know I was eating ice cream?I never eat the ice cream, especially in the morning.Besides,he knows that I had been trying to diet again. However,I could hardly hide the laughter in my voice as I calmly asked,"Why would you think I'm eating coffee ice cream?"
Gary said,"Uh...first,you said 'Just having a little early lunch' in a guilty, high voice.Second, your tongue must be rather cold because your words were a bit slow."What he said made me laugh out loud."The other thing is,I noticed you left some coffee ice cream untouched last night. That was like me hiding some cigarettes in the corner to enjoy later."
We laughed long and hard together before he asked me gently,"What happened?Er...something must have happened to make you eat ice cream before lunch."
Suddenly,I felt a rush of love for the man on the other end of the line.He knew me well-cared enough to find out what was bothering me,and trusted me enough to help me laugh at myself.

Brownie and Spotty were neighbor dogs who met every day to play together. These two loved each other and played together so often that they had worn a path through the grass of the field between their respective houses.
One evening, Brownie’s family noticed that Brownie hadn’t returned home. They went looking for him with no success and by the next week he was still missing.
Curiously, Spotty showed up at Brownie’s house alone. Barking, whining (哀叫) and generally pestering (纠缠) Brownie’s human family. Busy with their own lives, they just ignored the nervous little neighbor dog.
Continuously,Ted, Brownie’s owner, was disturbed by the angry, determined little dog. Spotty followed Ted about, barking insistently, then rushing toward a nearby empty lot and back, as if to say, “Follow me! It’s urgent!”
Eventually, Ted followed Spotty to a deserted spot half a mile from the house. There Ted found his beloved Brownie alive, one of his hind legs crushed in a steel leghold trap. Horrified, Ted now wished he’d taken Spotty’s earlier appeals seriously. Then Ted noticed something quite remarkable.
Spotty had done more than simply led Brownie’s human owner to his trapped friend. In a circle around the injured dog, Ted found an array of dog food and table scraps which were later identified as the remains of every meal Spotty had been fed that week!
Spotty had been visiting Brownie regularly, in the hope of keeping his friend alive by sacrificing his own comfort. Spotty had evidently stayed with Brownie to protect him from hunger and other dangers, and keep his spirits up.
Brownie’s leg was treated by a veterinarian (兽医) and he recovered. For many years thereafter, the two families watched the faithful friends chasing each other down that well worn path between their houses.
1.Why did Ted pay little attention to Spotty at the very beginning?
A.Because Ted was tired of listening to Spotty barking.
B.Because Ted only cared about Brownie’s safety.
C.Because Ted was not free at that moment.
D.Because Ted knew where Brownie was.
2.When Ted was led by Spotty to Brownie, he .
A.was curious to find out what had happened
B.highly appreciated Spotty’s help
C.was worried about Brownie’s health
D.regretted not following Spotty earlier
3.Not only did Spotty help Ted find Brownie but also .
A.he went to see his friend and played with him secretly
B.he sent messages to some other persons in his community to save his friend
C.he managed to lead a veterinarian to treat his friend
D.he sent food to his friend, accompanied him and inspired him to cheer up
4.What can we learn from the story?
A.Barking dogs seldom bite.
B.A friend in need is a friend indeed.
C.Love me, love my dog.
D.Every dog has its day.

Self-esteem(自尊心) is all about how much we are valued, loved, accepted, and thought well of by others and how much we value, love and accept ourselves. People with healthy self-esteem are able to do better in school and find it easier to make friends. They tend to have better relationships with others, feel happier, find it easier to deal with mistakes and failures, and are more likely to stick to something until they secceed, People with low self-esteem may feel as if no one will like them or accept them or that they can’t do well in anything.
The folowing ways may help you improve your self-esteem.
Try to stop thinking negative thoughts about yourself. If you’re used to focusing on your shortcomings, start thinking about positive aspects of youself that outweigh them. It is good to aim high, but your goals for yourself should be within reach, That’s why you should set practical goals and never expect the impossible. Mistakes are part of learning, so view mistakes as learning opportunities. Accept that you make mistakes because everyone does. Also, you should recognize what you can change and what you can’t. If you realize that you’re unhappy with something about yourself, you can change and start from today. If it’s something that you can’t change(like your height),start to work toward loving the way you are.Feeling like you’re making a defference or that your help is valued can do wonders to improve your self-esteem. So don’t hesitate to make a contribution. You can lend a hand to a classmate who’s having trouble. Hope your neighborhood clean up, or volunteer to do some other things.

Competitors who wear red win more than those that are dressed in any other color, according to study in Germany.
1. Experts believe that red could make individuals and teams feel more confident as well as being perceived by others as more aggressive.
2. On the other hand, the results could suggest that the success of those teams has given those that wear the red color more confident.
The study, by German sports psychologists at the University of Munster, was reported in New Scientist magazine. They showed video recording of taekwondo matches to 42 experienced referees. One fighter wore blue and the other wore red. They then showed them the same recordings but digitally manipulated the clothing to exchange the colors. 3. “If one competitor is strong and the other is weak, it won’t change the outcome of the fight,” said Norbert Hagemann, who led the study. “ 4. ”
In 2004 scientists at Durham University also looked at how color influenced sporting competitiveness. They analyzed Olympic contest sports such as boxing, taekwondo, and freestyle wrestling and found that nearly 55% of which were won by the competitor in red.
“ 5. ”said Robert Burton, one of the researchers.
A. It is the color of fire and is often associated with energy, danger, strength, power, and determination.
B. The fighters wearing red were given an average of 13 percent more points than when they wore blue.
C. The study shows that football shirts from worldwide teams such as Arsenal, Liverpool, sell successfully.
D. It is reasonable that wearing red makes individuals feel more confident, although this hasn’t yet been tested.
E. Researchers found that those who wear red tops, jackets or clothing score 10 percent more in any competition than if they were in another color.
F. The findings could explain why Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal have been so successful.
G. But the closer the levels, the easier it is for the color to tip the scale.

We probably all know people, either at work or in our personal lives, who are really good listeners. No matter what kind of situation we’re in, they always seem to know just what to say and how to say it so that we’re not offended or upset. We probably also know people who are masters at managing their emotions. They don’t get angry in stressful situations. Instead, they have the ability to calmly look at a problem and find a solution. They take criticism well, and they know when to use it to improve their performance.
People like this have a high degree of emotional intelligence, or EI. They know themselves very well, and they’re also able to sense the emotional needs of others.
As more and more people accept that emotional intelligence is just as important to professional success as technical ability, companies are increasingly using EI when they hire and promote someone. For example, one large cosmetics company recently revised their hiring process for salespeople to choose candidates based on emotional intelligence. The result? Salespeople hired with the new system have sold, on average, $91,000 more than salespeople selected under the old system.
Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize your emotions, understand what they are telling you, and realize how your emotions affect people around you. Emotional intelligence also involves your perception of others: when you understand how they feel, this allows you to manage relationships more effectively.
People with high emotional intelligence are usually successful in most things they do. Why? Because they’re the ones that others want on their team. When people with high EI send an email, it gets answered. When they need help, they get it. Because they make others feel good, they go through life much more easily than people who are easily angered or upset.
The good news is that emotional intelligence can be taught and developed. Many books and tests are available to help you determine your current EI, and identify where you may need to do some work.

Dolphins are not fish, but warm-blooded animals. They live in groups, and speak to each other in their own language. In this way they are like other animals, such as bees and birds. But dolphins are very different from almost all land animals. Their brains are nearly the same size as our own, and they live a long time—at least twenty or thirty years.
Like some animals, dolphins use sounds to help them find their way around. They also make these sounds to talk to each other and to help them find food. We now know they do not use their ears to receive these sounds, but the lower part of the mouth, called the jaw.
Strangely, dolphins seem to like man, and for thousands of years there have been stories about the dolphin and its friendship with people. There is a story about sailors in the 19th century. In a dangerous part of the sea off the coast of New Zealand, they learnt to look for a dolphin called Jack. From 1871 to 1903, Jack met every boat in the area and showed it the way. Then in 1903 a passenger on a boat called The Penguin shot and wounded Jack. He recovered and for nine years more continued to guide all ships through the area—except for The Penguin.
Today, some people continue to kill dolphins, but many countries of the world now protect them and in these places it is against the law to kill them.
1.Dolphins are different from many other animals in that they __________.
A. live in groups B. have large brains
C. are warm-blooded D. have their own language
2.Which of the following does the dolphin use to help it find its way around?
A. Its nose. B. Its ears.
C. Its mouth. D. Its eyes.
3.By telling the story of Jack the writer wanted to show that __________.
A. dolphins are friendly and clever
B. people are cruel to animals
C. Jack is different from other dolphins
D. dolphins should be protected by law
