When 1 was a boy we used to live across the road from a big hill with huge oak trees growing out of it.When winter arrived, thick, heavy snow would fall, and my two brothers would grab their sleds heading over to the hill for a day of fun.I remember watching them with envy because 1 was still too small to go sledding. Finally, one winter 1 was considered big enough and joined my brothers as they carried their sleds up the long hill and prepared to ride down it.
The first few trips I rode with one of my brothers and had the time of my life.It was so exhilarating when the wind whipped across my face as I flew down the hillside on the wooden sled.Near the end of the day 1 was overjoyed too when my oldest brother decided to let me try riding the sled all by myself.I climbed on it full of excitement and lay on my stomach. Then with one big push my brother sent me down the snowy hillside.1 was doing pretty well too until I hit an old stump hidden by the snow and went off course, straight towards one of those big oak trees. My heart pounded in my chest and I could hear myself screaming. At the last possible second I rolled off and the sled crashed into the tree.I could hear my brothers running down the hill yelling,“You have to steer(操控)!You have to steer!”
Sadly, that wasn’t the last time I failed to steer when some obstacle knocked me off course in my life. Many times problems, troubles, and my own failures have sent me crashing into the trees of anger, frustration, and despair.I am still learning that life isn’t always safe sledding.I am still learning that it is up to me to steer myself back to love, back to kindness, back to goodness, and back to God.
Life is a trip, but no one ever said it was a smooth ride.Steer well then.Steer straight.Steer your soul towards the light and the love we are all meant for.

Attending a live musical performance in a huge sports center with lots of supporters of the musician is exciting. Even in a theatre, a skilled performer can provide a great show. Here in the U.S., a very different kind of performance space is gaining in popularity.
Singer-songwriter Annalise Emerick is getting ready to play a show. It is something she does most nights in bars, and other small spaces across the country. But tonight, the setting is even smaller. Ms. Emerick will play for a few people in Kristina Shulz's home.
Ms. Shulz has been holding such performances in her home for about four years. As many as 30 people have attended past shows. The crowd is usually a mix of family, friends and neighbors. But some strangers might show up, too. The performances are listed on house concert websites. ''We've done rock, we've had blues, we've had pop, folk...pretty much anything...anything we’ll have here. '' she said.
House concerts have become an importance part of Annalise Emerick's earnings. ''I can play a bar for 100 dollars, but I can play a house concert and if there are 50 people and they all paying $20 I’m having a great night. And they're all buying CDs. It’s amazing. ''
Ms. Emerick says house concert audiences tend to make more supportive fans. They follow her career, buy her new releases, and go to her shows when she is in town.
''There's just a totally unique experience as opposed to playing like a coffee shop or a bar or something like that where people are usually there, but you don’t always know if they're there for you. ''
Charlie Dahan teaches music management courses. He used to organize shows for artists. Mr. Dahan says house concerts can be financially risky for artists.
''The downside for the artists is that most house concerts don't pay guarantees. In fact, most house concerts by law are not allowed to charge admission. Most of them can only do a suggested donation.'' On the other hand, he says house concerts can help fill an artist's performance calendar and build a loyal following.
Annalise Emerick says she has played in some homes so often the owners have become close friends. And that's been really nice for her.
1.All of the following about the house concerts in Kristina Shulz’s home are true EXCEPT ______.
A.Some strangers might attend the concerts.
B.Many kinds of music have been played in the concerts.
C.The performances are listed on house concert websites.
D.The concerts have become an important part of her income.
2.What does “a totally unique experience” refer to?
A.People come just for your music. B.People come to drink coffee.
C.People are paying much for your music. D.People are buying your CDs.
3.In Charlie Dahan’s opinion, house concerts ______.
A.should charge admission
B.should do more donations
C.bring uncertain income
D.help artists make friends
4.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.The advantages of house concerts B.The popularity of house concerts
C.Ways to get royal fans for artists D.Ways to fill an artist’s calendar

Dae Jon is the city in South Korea, where I was born and grew up. There was a public park there. It was a very popular place, and I have tons of precious (珍贵的) memories from times spent there.
Our teachers often took us to that park for a spring or fall picnic. When I learned martial arts (武术)—Tae Kwon Do, my master usually took us there to train us. There was a hill there which was not high, so I could reach the peak (山顶) within forty minutes even though I was very young. From the peak, I could see a lot of places if it was a sunny day.
There was a huge rock on the top called Eagle Rock because the shape of the rock looked like the head of an eagle. We spent lots of fun days there. We played hide-and-seek within the limited area, and we sometimes caught frogs and fish in the pond. When we felt thirsty, we enjoyed drinking cold spring water.
When I was a ten-year-old boy, I usually went to the park with my father to exercise early in the morning. It was quite dark, so I sometimes felt afraid, but after I got used to going there, I enjoyed breathing the fresh air and hearing the birds sing.
Recently, I went back to the park to remember my good times there. When I arrived at the entrance, I was surprised because it didn’t seem to be the same as I remembered it. Everything has changed in the thirteen years since I last saw it, but the good memories soon came back. I could almost imagine a boy playing there with a slight smile and shaking hands with me.

Carnival (狂欢节) is the most famous holiday in Brazil. It is not about an important time in history or about a famous person, but it is important for the people because it’s a time of friendship, freedom, and almost a whole week without work. People can have parties or have a rest, and most people choose parties, day after day, night after night. It starts forty days before Easter (复活节). It lasts four days and four nights. It starts on Saturday and finishes on Wednesday. People wear their colourful clothes and go out into the streets or to the clubs. There are also groups of people who make a parade (游行) showing their music and cars. Every year the parade tells a different story. Each city has at least one group like this.
In the south, life returns to normal by Wednesday. However, it is not accepted by the church in the northwest, where Carnival is more common. There people don’t respect its end and continue to have parties until the next Sunday.
I like Carnival, but I don’t agree that the party should keep going on for so many days. Unfortunately, some people aren’t responsible and give it a bad name, and that makes people remember the bad things about this. However, it is the only national holiday that brings together the whole country and its different people and cultures.
1.Why is Carnival important for the people in Brazil?
A. Because it’s a time of friendship and freedom.
B. Because it’s about an important time in history.
C. Because it’s a time of almost a whole month without work.
D. Because it’s a time to remember a famous person.
2.People choose ways to celebrate Carnival EXCEPT_____________.
A. having parties B. having a rest
C. making a parade D. going shopping
3.In the following descriptions of Carnival, which one is NOT true?
A. It starts forty days before Easter.
B. It starts on Saturday and finishes on Thursday.
C. There are groups of people who make a parade showing their music and cars.
D. Every year the parade tells a different story.
4.What does the author think of Carnival?
A. The author doesn’t care for Carnival.
B. The author never joins in Carnival.
C. The author does not like Carnival.
D. The author likes Carnival, but he doesn’t agree the party goes on so many days.
