Farmer John and Farmer Bob were neighbours. For more than 30 years, they had been getting along very well.
Then their good relationship broke. It began with a small thing, then bitter words, and then weeks of silence. One morning Farmer John woke up to find a stream between the two farms. “It must be Bob,” John thought.
Then one day there was a knock on John’s door. He opened it to find a carpenter standing at the doorway.
“I’m looking for a few days’ work,” the carpenter said.
“I do have a job for you,” John said. “Look across the stream at that farm. That’s my neighbor Bob. He dug a stream between the two farms. I want you to build a fence—an 8-foot fence. I don’t want to see his place or his face any more. I don’t have such a neighbor!”
The carpenter said, “I think I know what to do, sir, and I’ll be able to do a job that pleases you.”
Farmer John helped the carpenter get the materials ready and then he was off for the day.
About sunset when the farmer returned, the carpenter had just finished his job. The farmer’s eyes opened wide. There was no fence there at all!
It was a bridge! And the neighbor, Bob, was coming across, with his hand outstretched(伸出). “Hi, John! You’re quite a fellow to build this bridge!”
Then they met in the middle, taking each other’s hands. “I’m terribly sorry for what I have said and done. We should be good to each other.” said Farmer Bob.
Then they turned to see the carpenter, who was ready to go. “No, wait! Stay a few days. I have a lot of other jobs for you,” said Farmer John. “I’d love to stay,” the carpenter said, “but I have more bridges to build.”
1. Just before the carpenter came, John and Bob ________ each other.
A. often fought with B. were friendly to
C. didn’t speak to D. never had bitter words with
2. Farmer John asked the carpenter to build a fence because ________.
A. he wouldn’t like to see Bob B. he didn’t want to do it himself
C. he wanted to protect his farm D. he wanted to find him something to do
3. What does the sentence “You’re quite a fellow to build this bridge!” mean?
A. John should build the bridge earlier
B. John was not good at building bridges.
C. John was foolish to build such a bridge.
D.] John was great to build this bridge.
4. What do you think of the carpenter?
A. Shy. B. Careless. C. Proud. D. Wise

For more than twenty years scientists have been searching for signs of life on other planets. Most of these searches have been done over the radio. The hope is that someone in outer space may be trying to get in touch with us. Scientists also have sent radio and television messages on spaceships traveling through space, on the chance that someone may be receptive (善于接受的) to such messages.
Scientists are using powerful radio telescope to listen to signals from about 1,000 stars, all within 100 light years of earth. In addition, they will scan (扫视) the entire sky to “listen” for radio messages from more distant stars. Using a computer, they will be able to monitor more than eight channels at one time. Scientists are looking for any signal that stands out from the background noise.
Of the 200 billion stars in the Milky Way galaxy (银河星系), scientists find that five percent are like our sun. Perhaps half of them have a planet like earth. Such a planet would be a reasonable distance from the star for temperatures to be right for the evolution of life. Based on the inhabitable (that can be lived in) planets in our galaxy, most scientists agree that chances are likely that one or more of these planets support some life.
However, many scientists wonder whether intelligent (有智力的) life exists on other planets. Some believe that twenty years of searching without any intelligible (可理解的) messages shows that no one is out there. They say that the evolution of intelligence comparable to ours is unlikely.
Other scientists believe that our search hasn’t been long enough to rule out the possibility that intelligent life exists in our galaxy. Although our sun family in only about five billion years old, our galaxy is about 20 billions years old. In that time, some scientists think it is likely that civilizations are much more advanced than ours. Perhaps these civilizations send us no signals; perhaps we have not recognized the signals they have sent us. If we hope to find intelligent life, these scientists believe that we have to keep looking.
1.According to the passage, how many planets in our galaxy might human beings live?
A. 5 billion B. 10 billion C. 15 billion D. 200 billion
2.The first paragraph in this passage is mainly about ______.
A. where scientists are looking for signs of life on other planets
B. why scientists are looking for signs of life on other planets
C. how scientists are looking for signs of life on other planets
D. when scientists are looking for signs of life on other planets
3. The underlined word “monitor” in the passage means “______”.
A. find B. follow C. study D. form
4. Which of the statements is TRUE based on the information in the passage?
A. The earth is one of the oldest planets in our galaxy.
B. Most scientists believe that there is intelligent life on other planet.
C. Scientists don’t believe that there might be life on other planets.
D. Scientists are trying different ways to find signs of life on other planet.

For more than twenty years scientists have been seeking to understand the mystery of the “sixth sense” of direction. By trying out ideas and solving problems one by one, they are now getting closer to one answer. One funny idea from observing animals in nature is that animals might have a built-in compass.
Many birds migrate(迁徙)twice a year between their summer homes and winter homes. Some of them fly for thousands of kilometers and mostly at night. Experiments have shown that some birds can recognize star patterns. But they can keep on course even under cloudy skies. How can they do that? A common bird that does not migrate but is great at finding its way home is the horning pigeon(鹤子)and they have been widely studied. One interesting experiment was to attach little magnets (磁铁,磁场)to the birds’ heads to block their magnetic sense — just as a loud radio can keep you from hearing a call to dinner. On sunny days, that did not fool the pigeons. Evidently they can use the sun to tell which way they are going. But on cloudy days, the pigeons with magnets could not find their way. It was as if the magnets had blocked their magnetic sense. Similar experiments with the same kind of results were done with honeybees.
In spite of the experiments, the idea of an animal compass seemed pretty extraordinary. How would animals get the magnetic stuff for a compass? An answer came from an unexpected source, A scientist was studying bacteria that lived in the mud of ponds. He found accidentally little rod-like bacteria that all swam together in one direction 一 north. In fact, the bacteria had made themselves into little magnets that could line up with the earth’s magnet.
The big news was that a living thing, even a simple bacterium, can make magnetite. That led to a search to see whether animals might have it. By using a special instrument, scientists were able to find magnetite in bees and birds, and even in fish. In each animal, except for the bee, the magnetic stuff was always in or close to the brain.
Thus, the idea of a built-in animal compass began to seem reasonable.
1.The main purpose of this passage is to .
A. explain how the animal compass was invented
B. answer how an animal would get the magnetic stuff for a compass
C .introduce a famous experiment
D. prove the idea that animals might have a built-in compass
2.Which of the following can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A. The bacteria magnetic sense seemed to be the same as the earth’s.
B. The earth itself is a big magnet with which something magnetic might lines up
C. Little rod-like bacteria were found to swim north together through experiments.
D. Migrant birds can easily lose their way because of lacking magnetie.
3.The underlined words “keep on course” in the second paragraph means“
A.stay in the correct flying route
B.lose one’s way
C.remain calm
D.recognize star patterns
4.Where is probably the built-in magnet for a fish according to the scientists?
