Aids today
Aids, the short form for acquired immune deficiency syndrome, is caused by a virus called HIV, which enters a person’s blood and attacks the body’s immune (免疫的) system. There is no cure for HIV or Aids, and after a person has been infected, he or she will always carry the virus. Sometimes, infected people have no outward symptoms.
HIV and Aids are spreading across the world at a frightening rate, with about 14,000 people being infected daily. The virus is spread in three ways -- through unprotected sex, blood-blood contact and mother-to-child transmission. Unprotected sex is the most common way that the virus is spread, accounting for 75 percent of adult infections worldwide.
Although many people are familiar with Aids and how it is transmitted, more than a few people hold the view that HIV and Aids are an African problem because the infection rates there are very high. However, HIV and Aids are a problem all over the world. Since the disease was discovered in the 1980s, it has become a serious problem in many places, infecting over 60 million people worldwide. According to the World Health Organization estimates from 2005, more than 4 million children had died from Aids, and more than 14 million children had lost their parents to Aids. All of this makes it clear that something must be done to stop this deadly disease.
The government is working hard to control the Aids epidemic and has opened labs to test and monitor the disease. In 2003, the government also started providing free drugs for Aids patients in need.
The United Nations has been very involved in fighting HIV and Aids around the world for many years now. UNAIDS, an organization founded in 1996, helps prevent the spread of Aids. The work includes providing infected people with help from doctors and testing for people. The organization also offers programs that teach Aids prevention to young people and sets up treatment centers.

After the women’s movement in the world, women’s position in society as well as at home is improving. But how many men on earth have helped their wives do their housework at home, do you know? Recently a European Commission tried to find out people's ideas and reactions to the women's movement. They have carried out an overall survey of that. As part of their survey , they asked many men and women all over the Europe the same question,“Who does the housework?” The men answered very differently from the women!
The housework they asked people about were: preparing meals, washing dishes, cleaning the house and babysitting. 48% of British husbands said they did these things at home. 37% of Danish men helped their wives do such things in the house. But only 15% of Italian men said they did the housework; many of them said they never helped at all.
But there was an interesting point of view from the wives. According to British wives, only 38% of their husbands helped in the house. And Italian wives said that their husbands hardly ever helped them at home. The Italian and British men did not tell the truth! The Commission, however, found that Danish men were the most truthful husbands, fpr their answers were the same as their wives' answers.
Do the men you know around you help their wives in the house? Do you think the survey made by the European Commission gives a true picture in your experience? Write and tell us what you think.

A Survey has been made recently to make out what are the public opinion on the one-child policy. Here are the results of it.
Many teenagers suggest they should have a brother or sister. Perhaps they feel this might make up for a gap in their own lives,
Bao Yunlu, a Senior 2 boy from the No.8 Middle School in Hefei, Anhui Province, often dreams of having an elder sister, “I want her to help me with my homework, share my feelings and take care of me,” he said.
But last week Li Honggui, head of the China Family Planning Association (CFPA), caused a hot discussion when he told newspapers there would be no change to the current one-child policy. It will remain the provincial governments’ right to decide on individual cases.
The one-child policy began in 1978. Now China had nearly 100 million single child families, one-third of the total. The policy has successfully slowed down Chinese population growth by 10 million babies a year. But there are problems.
As the centre of the family’s attention they do not know about the hardships of life. “The one-child generation has no idea of thrift (节俭)” said XingYuan, professor of sociology at Shanxi University. Some of them also don’t know how to get on well with others.
Bao agreed that being an only child has had a bad effect on his personality. “We are less tolerant (宽容) and considerate than our schoolmates who have brothers or sisters.” He said.
But others don’t agree. “I don’t feel the difference between me and my classmates who have a brother or sister. They often complain to me about quarrelling with their brothers or sisters. I feel lucky to have nobody to steal my belongings,” said Bai Yijing, a Senior 1 girl from the Middle School Attached to Beijing Petroleum Institute.
What’s your opinion? Let us know it, please.

Sometimes distance makes relationships even closer. So, if you are far from your friends, there are many ways you can remain in contact(联系). You can use email, chat programs, and you can also write a blog and share your daily life activities with your friends.

I have seen good friendships and when there is unhealthy competition between two friends. Though this may not happen in many cases, it is better to keep this idea in mind since it may happen to you.

When Should a Leader Apologize and When Not?
Why Difficult?
When we wrong someone we know, even not intentionally,we are generally expected to apologize so as to improve the situation. But when we’re acting as leaders, the circumstances are different. The act of apology is carried out not only at the level of the individual but also at the level of the institution. It is a performance in which every expression matters and every word becomes part of the public record. Refusing to apologize can be smart,or it can be stupid. So,readiness to apologize can be seen as a sign of strong character or as a sign of weakness. A successful apology can turn hate into personal and organizational harmony—while an apology that is too little, too late,or too obviously strategic can bring on individual and institutional ruin. What, then,is to be done? How can leaders decide if and when to apologize publicly?
Why Now?
The question of whether leaders should apologize publicly has never been more urgent. During the last decade or so,the United States in particular has developed an apology culture—apologies of all kinds and for all sorts of wrongdoings are made far more frequently than before. More newspaper writers have written about the growing importance of public apologies. More articles, cartoons, advice columns, and radio and television programs have similarly dealt with the subject of private apologies.
Why Bother?
Why do we apologize? Why do we ever put ourselves in situations likely to be difficult, embarrassing, and even risky?Leaders who apologize publicly could be an easy target. They are expected to appear strong and capable. And whenever they make public statements of any kind, their individual and institutional reputations are in danger. Clearly, then, leaders should not apologize often or lightly. For a leader to express apology, there needs to be a good, strong reason. Leaders will publicly apologize if and when they think the costs of doing so are lower than the costs of not doing so.
Why Refuse?
Why is it that leaders so often refuse to apologize, even when a public apology seems to be in order?Their reasons can be individual or institutional. Because leaders are public figures, their apologies are likely to be personally uncomfortable and even professionally risky. Leaders may also be afraid that the admission of a mistake will damage or destroy the organization for which they are responsible. There can be good reasons for hanging tough in tough situations,as we shall see,but it is a high-risk strategy.
―→·Public apology is much more than a(an) 1.act.
·It’s no 2. job to strike a balance between apologizing or not.
·Apologies not 3.offered can bring on individual and institutional ruin.
Why has the issue of public apology been so 4. now in USA?―→ ·In an 5., admission of all sorts of wrongdoings is more required than before.

Sometimes, children are given an injection(注射)for reducing the lead level. Since it was founded a year ago, the babysitting pool has become increasingly popular in the United States. More and more mothers have joined it and have benefited from it. What attracts them most is the idea that you pay your babysitter not in cash, but in paper cards. When you join the babysitting pool, you are given thirty cards, which are worth 30-minute babysitting time each. For each half an hour while you are gone, the babysitter gets paid one card.
There are rules regulating this service. You should not watch more than three kids at a time including your own. On big holidays, such as Christmas and Thanksgiving, the babysitter should be paid twice as much, which means two cards for every half an hour. When you leave the babysitting pool, you should return all the cards. If you are out of cards, you cannot use money instead. You should have to baby-sit for others to earn enough cards so that you will have them handy when you yourself need a babysitter.
Many mothers think highly of this service. It keeps children in constant touch with one another, and makes life easier for the mothers. Since in most cases, the babysitter is the mother who watches other kids at her own home, it is still possible for her to do her own things while the kids play with each other. In fact most mother babysitters find that their own kids are less of a monster and easier to watch when they are around other playmates. Moreover, since the babysitting pool service does not involve money, it will not be a financial loss to the family.
In the past year, the babysitting pool has helped so many mothers with their work that they all think that it is indeed a good community service worth keeping.
