3. When it comes to safety, standing up for yourself is important.
If you aren’t getting all the security features you want, don’t be afraid to ask. If your lighting situation is less than ideal, discuss this with your supervisor or landlord. Talk to the campus security organization if you think a security phone near your dorm is a good idea. Request that the building employ someone to monitor those entering and leaving the building. You should feel safe where you reside (居住于), so stand up for your rights.
4. Be careful.
You still might find yourself in a potentially dangerous situation. Check your peephole (窥视孔) before letting anyone in. When it comes to preschool education, there are two lines of thought. One says that preschoolers need to be taught early academic skills in order to get a leg up on future school achievement. Another says the focus should be on social and emotional development. But, new research from Penn State University says a high quality preschool program should do both.
Karen Bierman, Penn State Professor of Psychology, and her team studied 350 preschoolers. Half were taught the traditional curriculum(课程). The other half were given the basic curriculum as well as social and emotional teaching.
The results show that the half students taught with a curriculum that includes social lesson, such as sharing, listening and self-control, score higher in both the social and academic areas of school readiness than the other half students.
The other finding is that when you work on both academic and social-emotional skills, you get stronger gains in both areas. “You get the combined power when you put both together, so neither area is weakened.” she says.
Clearly, knowing how to share, develop healthy friendships, and learn side-by-side with others is important to a child’s academic achievement in the classroom. But, Bierman says the importance of social and emotional education goes beyond that. Preschool is prime time for the development of self-regulation, which not only tells a child not to hit another child, but also tells a child how to set personal goals and focus himself enough to follow through with those goals. And the ability to regulate behavior is what helps children get motivated at school. “When they get upset, bored, or frustrated, it doesn’t defeat them.” she says.
Goal-oriented (面向目标的) and motivated learning is best taught in preschool, Biernam says, when the prefrontal part of the brain, which controls decision-making, is at the height of development. “First grade teachers can teach letter names, but preschool is when that behavior is peaking and language is just beginning to develop,” she says.
1.Karen Bierman and her team carried out the research by ________.
A. tracking 350 preschoolers for years
B. separating children into two equal groups
C. working out a high quality preschool program
D. analyzing the importance of social and emotional teaching
2.The underlined words “prime time” in the text probably refer to ________.
A.the best time B.the only time
C.the earliest time D.the suitable time
3.According to the text, self-regulation can help children ________.
A.be willing to study B.become emotionless
C.memorize letter names D.learn language quickly
4.What’s the best title for the text?
A. Preschool learning: more than ABCs and 123s
B. Karen Bierman: freeing kids from boring learning.
C. Learning self-regulation in preschool: why it matters?
D. Academic and social-emotional skills: which is more important?

When it comes to climate change, there are always some new, terrifying consequences to worry about—like ancient viruses and bacteria coming from the ice as the earth warms. Unfortunately, researchers fear we may see more of this in the future.
Some of these viruses and bacteria may have been trapped for thousands of years, and it’s not even totally clear yet what they are, let alone what kind of damage they might have.
Researchers have met complex “giant viruses” in the melting permafrost(永久冻土) of Siberia. One such virus, 30,000 years old, was still infectious when it was discovered in 2015, though it posed no danger to humans. It turns out that permafrost is excellent at preserving bacteria and viruses that are temporarily inactive, and then become reactivated with warming.
Scientists have discovered Spanish flu viruses in dead bodies buried in 1918 in the Alaskan tundra (冻原). When close to half of the population of a Siberian town in the 1890s died of smallpox (天花), their bodies were buried in the permafrost along the Kolyma River. The banks of that river are now beginning to wear away amid global warming, the BBC reports.
In Siberia in August 2016, some 100 people and 2,300 deer were infected with anthrax(炭疽) in the first outbreak in the area since 1941. One boy died from the disease. Scientist believed the anthrax had been trapped in the body of a long-frozen dead deer and became active during particularly hot summer of 2016, releasing the bacteria cells into the environment.
But even in warmer climates, rising temperatures can help grow and spread dangerous diseases. Over a decade ago, researcher Paul Epstein prophesied the possible spread of mosquito-born illnesses as a result of climate change. “Mosquitoes are sensitive to temperature changes,” he said. “Warming speeds up their rates of reproduction and the number of blood meals they take, makes their breeding (繁殖) season long, and shortens the maturation period for the germs they spread” --- all of which makes them more efficient at spreading disease.
1.Why are researchers worried about?
A. More ancient germs may reappear. B. The earth is being seriously polluted
C. Ice melting may cause heavy floods. D. Global climate change is worsening.
2.What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A. No “giant viruses” were discovered in Siberia.
B. A new way was found to deal with the new germs.
C. One ancient virus could still result in people’s death.
D. Permafrost can keep germs alive for a long time.
3.What led to a boy’s death in Siberia?
A. Flu. B. Cancer.
C. Anthrax. D. Smallpox.
4.Which can best replace the underlined word “prophesied” in the last paragraph?
A. Denied. B. Predicted.
C. Doubted. D. Prevented.

When it comes to success in business and success in life, there are few qualities as important as confidence.
People naturally have different levels of confidence. Some have a higher level of confidence than others do, but even those whose confidence is lacking can learn to build their level of confidence and reach their most important goals. Increasing self-confidence is one of the most common reasons people give for seeking the help of psychologists and other professionals.
One of the many places where a greater level of confidence is useful is in the workplace. We all know how difficult it can be, for instance, to ask the boss for a raise. This process can be extremely difficult for those who lack confidence in their own abilities. After all, if you are unsure about your own abilities, how will you ever convince your boss that you deserve more money for the work you do?
Even if you are not asking for that big raise, having plenty of confidence in your abilities is important to success. If you are certain of your abilities, chances are that those around you, whether they are your coworkers, your colleagues or your superiors(上级), will see that confidence, and that will help to assure them that you are the best at what you do.
Being thought of as the person to go to, and being seen as an expert in your chosen field, is naturally very important to success on the job. If you can make yourself the person people go to for guidance and advice, you will help to protect yourself from the ever present danger of downsizing. After all, if you are a recognized expert at the office, you will be regarded as an indispensable member of the team.
Having a high level of confidence, after all, does not mean overlooking the places where you could improve. Knowing what you do well and where you need help will help you enjoy increased success and confidence.
