John 9-16-2006 10:25 pm. | I also think Jacky is a better singer. I prefer his Cantonese songs. Maybe they sound better because Cantonese is his first language. |

I sat down, with food in my lap, waiting to watch a movie. It sounds like a typical Friday night at home, but this time it was not. I was sitting down in a theatre of over 300 Filipinos speaking their native tongues. We were watching a film named Ulam: Main Dish. It’s directed by a Filipino-American director, and it’s about Filipino / Filipino-American food.
Right before the film began, I was caught in this realization: this is a film created by my people, for my people and about my people, and shared with an audience much larger than just us. This was the first time I had ever experienced a film of this nature. I could understand its stories and culture. The theatre went dark and before the film rolled, my eyes were already overflowed (洋溢)with pride.
I was watching this film at the Reel Asian Film Festival. At this year’s festival, I joined the Reel Asian team as their Social Media Assistant. This meant that during the festival I could actually get to speak to the filmmakers, actors, producers, etc. Particularly, I had the chance to speak to filmmakers about why a festival like this is important to them.
Through talking with them, I learned that there is something really unique about the Reel Asian Film Festival. It brings good Asian cinema a home in what is known as an incredibly diverse city, allowing these stories to be told to a diverse audience of diverse views.
For anyone looking to find themselves in a film, learn more about other cultures, and enjoy a good movie, I truly believe that Reel Asian is the place to be. As an annual event, it's so well planned and organized, and so much expectation is being built.
1.How did the author probably feel while watching the movie?
A.She found the faces in the film strange.
B.She realized making a film was really hard.
C.She became very proud of being an American.
D.She could relate to the cultural information of the movie.
2.What did the author’s position at the festival allow her to do?
A.Ask directors for a role. B.Sell her works to producers.
C.Communicate with those making films. D.Form a filming team of her own.
3.According to the author, what is a function of the festival mentioned?
A.Introducing Asian films to more people.
B.Introducing other cultures to Asian producers.
C.Helping Asian people know more about foreign movies.
D.Helping Asian restaurants develop new markets.

Like many Czechs (捷克人), Lukáš Berný, 38, enjoys going out to the pub with his friends for conversation and a few beers. “I don’t drink every day,” he says. “I think about three times a week. When I go out, I usually have five to six beers at a time, about the same as my friends.” The beers are half-liters, or 500ml each.
If a half-liter of four-percent beer contains 16g of pure alcohol(酒精), Berný and his friends are drinking 80 to 96 grams of pure alcohol on each outing. The Czech Republic’s National Institute of Public Health, however, suggests that men take in fewer than 24g of pure alcohol per day; women, fewer than 16g.
Medical experts in over 40 countries around the world have agreed that drinking “too much” can cause harm. What they can’t seem to agree upon is just how much is “too much.” National safety levels are quite different, from a limit of 10g a day in the Netherlands to Denmark’s 60g.
There are a number of reasons for this. Dr. Larry Altshuler, a medicine expert for the Cancer Treatment Centers in Tulsa, explains that while everything is based on research, “Every group, race, and gender responds to alcohol differently.”
Also, researchers aren’t using the same models or methods. He adds, “It can be like apples and oranges. How do you measure alcohol? Units, drinks, bottles or cans? What’s the alcohol content(含量)? Is it light or heavy?” While a half-liter of four percent beer contains 16g of pure alcohol, a half-liter of five percent lager contains 20g.
Constance Scharff, a director of Addiction Research at Cliffside Malibu Treatment Center in California, says she believes the reason “is largely cultural.” “But the evidence is clear that the more you drink, the more likely you are to develop alcohol-related health problems.”
1.The first paragraph is intended to ________.
A. describe the habit of Lukáš Berný
B. advise readers to live a carefree life
C. direct readers’ attention to the topic of drinking
D. support the popular belief that Czechs fancy drinking
2.The underlined word “this” in Paragraph 4 refers to ________.
A. the alcohol limit for Czechs
B. the measurement of alcohol content
C. the concern over the harmful effects of drinking
D. the difference in national safety levels of alcohol
3.According to the passage, what might determine the national safety standards of alcohol?
A. Drinking length and alcohol containers.
B. Drinking atmosphere and alcohol quality.
C. Cultural differences and measuring methods.
D. Research results and alcohol-related health problems.
4.What may be the best title for the passage?
A. How Can Drinking Be Safe?
B. How Much Alcohol Is Too Much?
C. Why Does Alcohol Do Harm to Health?
D. What Harm Will Alcohol Cause to Us?

Like their ancient toga-wearing counterparts, modern philosophers continue to disagree on the nature of freewill. Do we really have any control over the choices we make and the things we desire, and if so, to what degree?
Theories of freewill vary, but the ancient words of Plato still line up with our modern perceptions(概念) of temptation and willpower. The respected Greek philosopher argued that the human experience is one of constant struggle between the intellect and the body, between rationality and desire. Along these lines, true freedom is only achievable when willpower unchains us from bodily, emotional, instinctual slavery.
You can find similar thoughts throughout world religions, most of which offer a particular and often difficult path to rise above our darker natures.
And science? Well, science mostly agrees with all of this. Willpower is all about overcoming your natural desires to eat cupcakes, skip your morning workout, play games on mobile phone, hit the snooze alarm and check your e-mail during a funeral.
Your willpower, however, is limited. If life were a video game, you'd see a glowing "willpower" or "ego"(自我) meter at the top of the screen next to your "life" meter. Successfully resist one temptation, and the meter drains a little. The next temptation drains the "willpower" meter even more, until there's nothing left at all.
Our modern scientific understanding of willpower in large part stems from a 1996 research experiment involving chocolate and radishes(小红萝卜). Psychologist Roy Baumeister led a study in which 67 test subjects were presented with tempting chocolate chip cookies and other chocolate-flavored treats before a persistence-testing puzzle. Here's the catch: The researchers asked some of the participants to withdraw from sweets and snack on radishes instead.
Baumeister's results told a fascinating story. The test subjects who resisted the sweet stuff in favor of radishes performed poorly on the persistence test. They simply didn't have the willpower left to resist slacking off(松懈).
The research inspired more than a thousand additional studies discussing everything from the influence of positive messages to the ego-sapping power of daily decisions.
Studies also show that cognitive capacity also affects our ability to hold out against temptation. Cognitive capacity is essentially your working memory, which you employ when resisting a temptation ... or holding a string of numbers in your head. A 1999 study from the University of Iowa professor Baba Shiv found that people tasked with remembering a two-digit number held out better than people remembering a seven-digit number when tempted with chocolate cake.
1.What do you understand by ‘freewill’?
A.The control we have over the choices.
B.The choices we make and the things we desire.
C.The choices that philosophers force us to make.
D.Our perception of temptation.
2.According to Plato, when is true freedom available?
A.Willpower to realize one’s own ego. B.Our ability to overcome temptation.
C.Our ability to remember things. D.The desire to give in to temptation.
3.What is meant by ‘cognitive capacity’?
A.When there is a struggle between the intellect and the body.
B.When our willpower helps us to overcome our basic instincts.
C.When we desire that which we cannot achieve.
D.When we have no control over our ego.
