Many freshmen may get anxious at the thought of living at their new campus and making friends but 18-year-old Melanie Salazar already has someone older and wiser to show her the ropes: her 82-year-old grandfather. The story of Salazar and her grandpa, Rene Neira, is spreading after she showed a photo of her grandpa’s first day of class this term at Palo Alto College (PAC).
I’m so proud of my grandpa for finishing his first day at PAC this term! He is 82 years old and not giving up,” said Salazar then. The old man is now in his second term at the community college with just one class left before he gains his associate’s degree(副学士学位) in economics. He hopes to attend the University of Texas at San Antonio to get his bachelor’s degree.
Salazar’s sweet social media post is inspiring dozens across the Internet, young and old. “My grandpa is very hard-working,” she said. “He will spend hours in the library studying in his own time because he’s very devoted to his education. Bringing Art into Hospitals
The medical world is gradually realizing that the quality of the environment in hospitals may play an important role in helping patients to get better.
As part of nationwide effort in Britain to bring art out of the museums and into public places, some of the country’s best artists have been called in to change older hospitals and to soften the hard edges of modern buildings. Of the 2500 national health service hospitals in Britain, almost 100 now have very valuable collections of present art in passages, waiting areas and treatment rooms.
These recent movements first started by one artist, Peter Senior, who set up his studio at a Manchester hospital in northeastern England during the early 1970s.He felt the artist had lost his place in modern society, and that art should be enjoyed by a wider audience(观众).
A common hospital waiting room might have as many as 5 000 visitors each week. What a better place to hold regular exhibitions of art! Senior held the first exhibition of his own paintings in the out—patient’s waiting area of the Manchester Royal Hospital in 1975.Believed to be Britain’s first hospital artist. Senior was so much in demand that he was soon joined by a team of six young art school graduates.
The effect is striking. Now in the passages and waiting rooms the visitor experiences a full view of fresh colours, playful images(形象)and restful courtyards.
The quality of the environment may reduce the need for expensive drugs when a patient is recovering from an illness. A study has shown that patients who had a view onto gardens needed half the number of strong pain killers compared with patients who had no view at all or only a brick wall to look at.
1. Some best artists of Britain have been called in to__________.
A.set up new hospitals |
B.make the corners of the hospital collect paintings |
C.bring art into hospitals |
D.help patients recover from serious illnesses |
2.After the improvement of the hospital environment,__________.
A.patients no longer take drugs to kill their pains |
B.patients don’t have to stay long in hospital |
C.patients need fewer pain killers when they suffer from an illness |
D.patients feel happy in hospital |
3.It can inferred from the passage that__________.
A.the role of hospital environment is important. |
B.hospital artists have done more than doctors |
C.exhibitions attract more audience in hospitals than in museums |
D.the hospital is a better place for people. |

The Plastic Bottle Village is just a great idea that might finally help people protect the environment. It’s a village in Panama that is going to be made of used plastic bottles.
The village will include about 120 homes of different sizes. The design begins with building structures of steel(钢铁),which are then filled with these bottles. Once this step is complete, and electrical lines are put inside, the plastic walls are covered by concrete(混凝土)—both inside and outside. So no one will actually be able to tell that the walls are made of plastic. Besides, the material will keep the house 17 ℃ cooler than the temperature outside, which is the biggest advantage to people living inside.
The village is the work of Robert Bezeau with the purpose of setting up some environmental projects. Having started a recycling program in 2012,during which a number of plastic bottles were collected,he started to think how they could be put to use. Soon enough,he decided to use them to build houses.
Over 10,000 plastic bottles were used to build the first house, which was completed late last year. The bottles were gained from the same recycling project that Robert had set up. The next home is expected to be bigger, and will need more bottles. The special homes will be sold on request for anywhere between $149,000 and $300,000. The village will also feature its living environment, such as gardens,mini-parks,and more.
22,000 plastic bottles are thrown away around the world per second. While all these bottles clearly cannot be reused into homes, the project hopes to raise the attention of the waste. The village will also create an education center that will teach people from the world how to reuse plastic bottles as building materials.
1.What is so special about the homes in the village?
A.They can stop people from being cold.
B.They are built out of plastic bottles.
C.They are being built by famous artists.
D.They are sold for anyone from anywhere.
2.The biggest advantage for the people living in the special houses lies in ________.
A.the cool temperature
B.environmental protection
C.cutting down the cost
D.different sizes
3.We can infer from Paragraph 3 that Robert Bezeau is________.
A.honest B.kind
C.serious D.creative
4.According to the passage,the village________.
A.is made up of 120 homes of the same size
B.will start another recycling program in the future
C.is introducing modern science to the villagers
D.will offer the villagers good living environment

It’s common knowledge that there are many benefits to being fit, but one large new study found that skipping out on the gym is practically the worst thing you can do for your health. In fact, the study claims not exercising might be more harmful to your health than smoking.
New findings, published Friday in the journal JAMA Network Open, detail how researchers at the Cleveland Clinic studied 122,007 patients from 1991 to 2014, putting them under treadmill (跑步机) testing and later recording death rates. Researchers found a clear connection between a longer, healthier life and high levels of exercise. The report calls for health care professionals to encourage patients to achieve and continue a strong and healthy fitness routine.
Although it is widely understood that an active lifestyle can lead to a healthy life, the study concludes that a lifestyle which involves much sitting but little activity is equal to having a major disease and the simplest cure is exercise.
Dr Wael Jaber, co-author of the study, called the results totally surprising. “Being unfit on a treadmill or in an exercise stress test has a worse prognosis (病情预断), as far as death, than being a smoker or suffering from high blood pressure,” Jaber told CNN. “We’ve never seen something as noticeable as this and as objective as this.”
The study also took a look at the risk of being overactive and found that extreme exercisers do not face higher risk of death: the research found that the more a person exercises the lower their death rates.
1.Which of the following best explains “skipping out on” in paragraph 1?
A. keeping away from B. running in
C. jumping out of D. smoking inside
2.What do we know from the new findings?
A. An active lifestyle can lead to a healthy life.
B. The simplest cure for a major disease is exercise.
C. A person unfit on a treadmill is less likely to die.
D. One’s life span is related to the level of exercise.
3.What does Jaber think of the research results?
A. Impossible. B. Amusing.
C. Unbelievable. D. Uncertain.
4.What conclusion can we draw from the last paragraph?
A. Too much exercise will be no good.
B. A low death rate depends on an active lifestyle.
C. Extreme exercise is more harmful for health.
D. The rise of death rate is related to exercise.
