A few weeks ago, while I was reading the morning paper, I turned the radio up to listen to a Saturday morning talk show and I heard an old sounding gentleman, with a golden voice. He was telling whoever he was talking with something about “a thousand marbles”.
I was intrigued and stopped to listen to what he had to say …
“Let me tell you something, Tom, something that has helped me keep a good perspective on my own priorities (优先考虑的事).”
He continued, “You see, I sat down one day and did a little math. The average person lives for about seventy-five years. Now then, I multiplied 75 by 52 and I came up with 3,900 which is the number of Saturdays that the average person has in their entire lifetime. Now stick with (继续倾听……的话) me, Tom. I’m getting to the important part.”
“It wasn’t until I had lived through over twenty-eight hundred Saturdays that I started thinking about all this in any detail,” he went on. “I got to thinking that if I lived to be seventy-five, I only had about a thousand of them left to enjoy. So I went to a toy store and bought 1,000 marbles. I took them home and put them inside a large, clear plastic container. Every Saturday since then, I have taken one marble out and thrown it away.
“I found that by watching the marbles diminish (变少), I focused more on the really important things in life. There is nothing like watching your time here on this earth run out to help get your priorities straight.
“It was nice to meet you, Tom. I hope you spend time with your family, and I hope to meet you again.”
You could have heard a pin drop on the radio when the old man signed off. I guess he gave us all a lot to think about. I had panned to work that morning. Instead, I went upstairs and woke my wife up with a kiss. “Come on, honey, I’m taking you and the kids to breakfast. And can we stop at a toy store while we’re out? I need to buy some marbles.”
1.The underlines word “intrigued” in Paragraph 2 probably means “ ________”.
A.encouraged B.moved C.worried D.attracted
2.The old man started practicing the theory of “a thousand marbles” ________.
A.in his twenties B.in his fifties

B.Enriching our life with marble games.
C.It’s never too late to love our family.

One day I was driving home with a woman. She rolled down the window, fifty feet away from the driveway and spit her gum (口香糖)out of the window. “Couldn’t you just wait five seconds and put your gum where it belongs?” I asked, annoyed.
She was not the only one who was gum-lazy. Consider the following. Every time I brush chewed gum under my desk, I shake with fright. At Folsom Middle School, whenever I had to walk by the gum wall next to the girls’ locker room, I felt totally disgusted. When I was young, I walked outside during my dance show in my ballet shoes, always stepping right on a big and juicy piece of bubble gum. I was extremely upset.
The worst part of all these incidents is that a trash can is located near. But some people are too lazy to walk towards it.
If you can’t be a responsible gum chewer, don’t chew at all. That’s all I’m going to say.
Take Singapore as a good example. The chewing gum ban in Singapore was placed. It bans the import and sale of chewing gum in Singapore, whether for the purpose of trade or personal chewing. However, the ban has been partly lifted with some types of gum, such as medical gum, allowable. This comes with the warning that it is sold only by a druggist, who has to take down the names of buyers. Obviously, the Singapore government gets angry at gum stuck in keyholes of mailboxes and on elevator buttons.
Not only is it annoying, but chewing gum can actually do harm to the health. Most gum contains aspartame (阿斯巴甜), a chemical sweetener(增甜剂)that the US government is now deciding whether or not it is a deadly chemical. If it is, it may cause cancer. Other studies suggest that aspartame may cause neurological(神经系统的)disorders. Therefore, aspartame is not allowed to use in the US.
So just say no to chewing gum.

A. It is proved to be a harmless chemical.
B. It is the cause of many kinds of cancer..

4.What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To advise people against chewing gum.
B. To criticize people who are lazy.
C. To persuade people to buy medical gum.

I was driving home from my laughter club when I passed a patrol policeman going in the opposite direction. I looked in my rear-view mirror(后视镜)and saw him make a quick Ilium. I looked down at my speedometer(速度计)and saw that I was going at the speed of 65 mph. He got behind me and started flashing those pretty red and blue lights. I could feel my heart pounding.
I am a Laughter Yoga Teacher. I teach people that laughter is the best medicine for stressful situations, so I decided to practice what I teach. I started laughing, not because it was funny, but because I know that laughter can reduce blood pressure and make people happy. The police officer walked to my car. When I rolled down my window I was giggling (笑)to myself.
''Did you know you were going at 75 mph in a 55 mph zone? '' he shouted. I tried to keep laughing and said ''No'' with a smile, I looked clown and saw that I was going at 65 mph. He responded, ''That is still breaking the law. The speed limit is 55. ''
I was thinking about the laughing. ''Ha ha ha, I made a mistake and I will learn a lesson from it Please forgive me''. I kept giggling to myself while he asked about my driving record. Then I laughed out loud when I explained to him, ''I used to get letters in the mail stating if I got one more ticket my license would be revoked'', I went on to say, ''when I was a teenager and in my early twenties. I haven’t had a ticket in at least 10 years. ''
He took away my license and went back to his police car. I could see him writing through my rear-view mirror. Soon he came back to my car, handed me back my license, smiled and said, ''Slow down, and have a nice day. ''
I believe that the laughter and smile changed him.

Ninety percent of Americans drive to work every day although working from home is on the rise. If you’re lacking for topics of conversation at a party, chatting about your commute(通勤) is a pretty safe bet.
According to a recent study, driving for more than two hours each day can steadily decrease the IQ of middle aged drivers. The Sunday Times of London detailed the study, which looked into the lifestyle choices of over 500,000 Britons between the ages of 37 and 73.
When looking at the data of the 93,000 participants who drove more than two to three hours per day, the study found a noticeable drop off in brainpower, measured by intelligence and memory tests. The study found similar results with participants who took part in several hours similarly sedentary (久坐的) activities, like television watching.
As it turns out, stimulating activity stimulates your brain, while non-stimulating activity, well, doesn’t stimulate your brain.
“Cognitive (认知的) decline is measurable over five years because it can happen fast in middle-aged and older people. This is associated with lifestyle factors such as smoking and bad diet — and now with time spent driving,” Kishran Bakrania, a medical epidemiologist(流行病学家) at the University of Leicester(莱斯特大学) told the Times.
Fortunately for most Americans, the average commute time was recorded at approximately 26.5 minutes according to the 2015 United States Census.
And if you think that the way to pump up your IQ is through brain games, think again. Just try and avoid those long hours on the road if possible, and if you happen to have free time on your commute, be sure to use it wisely.
1.According to the passage, which of the following may be of help to our brainpower?
A. Watching TV. B. Having sports.
C. Driving long time. D. Sleeping.
2.Why does the writer mention “results with people participating in similarly sedentary activities” in paragragh3?
A. To make a contrast. B. To give an example.
C. To make a description. D. To give more evidence.
3.We can infer from the passage that ________.
A. people should participate in more stimulating activities
B. long time drive may decrease the driver’s IQ
C. smoking and bad diet can cause cognitive decline
D. an increasing number of Americans drive to work every day

Whether you’re on a long road trip or stuck in traffic while driving home from work, a low phone battery (电池) could mean disaster for the bored driver. At first, it may seem harmless to plug your phone into your car’s USB port. But unless you’re desperate, charging your phone in your car might be a big mistake.
Why? First, the USB port in your vehicle probably provides less electricity than your phone really needs to charge. As a result, your phone might stop working while it charges, or worse—hardly charge at all.
Brad Nichols, a technician at Staymobile, told Reader’s Digest. “This is mostly due to the fact the phone is using more power than the car charger is supplying it.”
Nichols also says that your phone could receive too much power, especially if you’re using a “Cigarette Lighter” port to charge up. Most Cigarette Lighters can supply up to 10 amps (安培),while most chargers use one to three amps. A damaged charger can provide inconsistent power to the phone, leading to sudden power increase that could cause damage to the inside parts, or on the rare occasion, destroy it.
Charging your phone while on the road could use up your car’s battery, too. If your engine is off, but you still use the radio—the phone will draw power from your car’s battery as it charges. This usually isn’t a big deal for those who own new cars with healthy batteries Nichols says. But if your car is an older model, you might want to avoid charging your phone through its USB port.
Most importantly, it,s not safe to use your phone while operating a vehicle. “Anytime a person’s hands leave the wheel or eyes leave the road, it becomes very dangerous for them and the other people around them,” Nichols says. Bottom line: Play it safe, and wait until you get home to plug in.
1.What’s the main idea of the text?
A. The bottom line of playing your phone safely.
B. The problem with charging your phone in your car.
C. The danger of operating a vehicle while charging.
D. The best solution to charging your phone outside.
2.What does “it” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The phone. B. A damaged charger
C. “Cigarette Lighter” port. D. The inside parts.
3.How many reasons does the author list against charging your phone in your car?
A. 2. B. 3.
C. 4. D. 5.
4.Where is the passage probably taken from?
A. A traffic report. B. A driving guide.
C. A science magazine. D. A text book.
