Let’s be honest, kids are strange. And when you hear your three- year-old son arguing over who gets to be the mom while playing “house” alone in the other room, you might question if you’ve done something wrong as a parent. But don’t worry, it’s perfectly normal for your child to have an imaginary friend, and it even has some benefits. While your kids are benefiting from playing with their imaginary friend, try out these other ways to raise an intelligent child!
One of the biggest profits is that it promotes creativity. Just think about it-you have to be a special kind of creative to carry on a conversation with an imaginary figure that doesn’t respond. Developmental psychologist Marjorie Taylor told PureWow that your child’s creativity will remain with them as they get older, even when they stop hanging out with their “friend”.
Along with being more creative, they will also have a better developed and more different vocabulary as well as stronger social skills. Talking to “Sally” or “Bob” all day will allow them to practice their speech and conversation skills. Researchers at La Trobe University in Australia found that children who engage with their imaginary friends on a regular basis use more complex sentences and are more confident in everyday social situations.
There are also some benefits for the parents. If your child’s brothers or sisters aren’t around or they’re an only child, they have someone to entertain them while you spend the time on you never-ending to-do list. So even though it might get odd when your kids constantly ask you to set an extra plate at the table for their imaginary friends, they’ll benefit in the future from keeping them around. Having an extra member of the family can’t be that bad, the more the merrier, right?
1.Who is the three-year-old boy talking to while playing “house” alone?
A. His toy. B. His mother.
C. His brothers and sisters D. His imaginary friend.
2.How does Marjorie Taylor feel about children playing with heir “friend”?
A. It helps children develop better.
B. It relieves busy parents’ pressure.
C. It shows children’s loneliness.
D. It makes the family get closer.
3.What does the author suggest to parents?
A. Sparing time with children.
B. Taking children to play outside.
C. Adopting an extra member of family.
D. Letting children play with imaginary friends.
4.What is the best title for the text?
A. Ways to play creatively
B. Ways to raise an intelligent child
C. Benefits of children’s having imaginary friends
D. Benefits of letting your child play

Your schooldays should be some of the best and happiest days of your life. How can you gain the most from them, and ensure you do not waste this wonderful opportunity to learn?
Be positive about school. Don’t say things are difficult or boring. Be interested in school-life and your school subjects. Join lots of activities. Be quick to put your hand up. Go round the school with a big smile.
Expect to work. School is not a holiday camp. If you are not working, you are not learning, and you are wasting your time at school. Teachers cannot make everything enjoyable.
Keep fit. If you do not eat a good breakfast, you will be thinking about food in class. If you go to bed late and do not have enough sleep, you will be sleepy in class. Play some sports to keep your body strong.
Do today’s work today. Do not say you will do things tomorrow. If you get behind the class, it is very difficult to get back in front. You cannot finish a race if you rest all the time.
Don’t be too disappointed if things sometimes go badly. Everyone fails some tests, loses some matches and has bad days. Friends are not always perfect, and they sometimes say and do unpleasant things. Don’t let small problems seem very big and important.
Talk about problems. Sometimes they are only the result of misunderstanding. Don’t be too embarrasssed to ask for help. You are young. No one thinks you can do everything.
Plan your time. Don’t waste life lying in bed on Saturday morning. Go and play a sport, learn the piano, work on a project, read a book, practise English, or help someone with problems. There are always a lot of things to do.
Set targets. If your last grade was a D, work for a C. try to make progress bit by bit. Think of small targets: “I will speak in class four times this week”, “I will finish my project on Wednesday” or “I will get two more marks this week”.
Follow our advice, and have a happy school-life!

If you don’t prepare yourself now, retirement may be some of the most boring and dull years of your life. To have a happy, fulfilling retirement, you need to start preparing right away.
The most obvious thing for people to do when they retire is to take up a hobby. The most important step to take before retiring, though, is to make sure that you actually have started some hobbies. Once you’re retired, unless you ‘ve already started a hobby, you’ll find it very hard to get into something new. Some hobbies aren’t for everyone. Think about what you enjoy doing and start participating on a casual basis now.
Another thing many people participate in is volunteering. Not only does volunteering give you something to do, it also gives you a sense of accomplishment(成就) and can add meaning to your life .Volunteering is also rewarding in other ways, too. There are hundreds of different types of volunteer services and you’ll always be able to meet new and interesting people. Also, don’t think that volunteering is always only about helping someone for free. Many companies pay their volunteers after they’ve had enough experience and prove themselves to be valuable workers.
There are plenty of other potions, as well. Going back to school is a great way to keep yourself feeling young. Taking a vacation around the world with your loved ones is another great way to spend your retirement.
Ultimately, though, the key to a happy retirement is simply keeping yourself busy and doing whatever you love. If there’s nothing you love doing now, then you’ll find that once you have a vast amount of free time, your life will be pretty empty. Now is the time to find out what you want to do when you retire.
1.Why does the author suggest starting a hobby before retirement?
A. Because we are likely to have difficulty starting a hobby after retirement.
B. Because we are gong to have a vast amount of free time after retirement.
C. Because we will only have a limited choice of hobbies after retirement
D. Because not every one of us has already started some hobbies already.
2.What can we learn about volunteering from the text?
A. We can make devoted friends through volunteering.
B. It can help companies find hard-working workers.
C. One can even make some money by volunteering.
D. Almost everyone is willing to help in some way.
3.Which of the following can best explain “a happy retirement”?
A. Travelling around the world every year.
B. Going back to university for further study.
C. Having plenty of free time for one’s hobbies.
D. Living a busy life and doing what one enjoys doing

Of the several films Hirokazu has made about childhood and children, this one is the most modest, but no less pleasing for its delicate style and small setting. I Wish was originally called Miracle, and the change is for the better. The two-word title makes you want to know who’s wishing for what, while the single word sounds plain and self-praising. This wise and funny film works small miracles in describing such a moment when kids turn from the wishfulness of childhood into shaping the world for themselves.
The sweetly reflective hero, a sixth-grader named Koichi, starts out by wishing for a volcano to erupt. Not just any volcano, but the one that towers above his town, smoking heavily and giving off ash. An eruption would lead to a withdrawing, which would lead, at least in his mind, to a reunion with his father and kid brother, who’ve been living in Hakata while Koichi lives with his mother and retired grandparents in Kagoshima. The volcano, knowing nothing of this, refuses to erupt, but Koichi hears of another approach to realizing the desired miracle.
One of the pleasures of I Wish is watching how kids behave — how Koichi attacks his dinner, for example. Another pleasure is rediscovering how kids think. These kids can be logical and ever so tricky. But children’s thought processes can also be fancy. A boy wishes he could play baseball like one of baseball stars, who eats curry for breakfast; so he, too, starts eating curry for breakfast, instead of practicing on the field. Another boy tries to wish his dead dog, Marble, back to life. And what does Koichi finally wish for? I wish you’d see this delightful film to find out.
1.Why has the name of the film been changed from Miracle to I Wish?
A. The former is controversial and self-praising.
B. The former isn’t related to the content of the film.
C. The latter is easy for audience to remember.
D. The latter is easier to arouse audience’s interest.
2.Koichi wishes the volcano to erupt so that he can ________.
A. enjoy the wonderful scene of a volcano
B. help those who suffer from the eruption
C. get together with his family members
D. work miracles during the disaster
3.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. I Wish is a film set in a volcano eruption.
B. I Wish shows a lively and thoughtful world of children.
C. I Wish shows audience some dull and ridiculous behaviors.
D. I Wish is a serious science fiction movie.
4.What does the writer intend to do in this text?
A. To share pleasures of watching a film.
B. To make a review on a film.
C. To discuss kids’ behavior and thoughts.
D. To recommend a film.

Let us imagine how Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen's most famous work, might be updated, 200 years on.
Austen's popularity is rooted in her intelligence. But today she would certainly have had a very different life, as would her characters. Here's my own suggestion. . .
It is a truth finally and universally acknowledged that a single woman with brains deserves to have equal opportunities to men, however disadvantaged she may feel by sexism.
"My dear husband," said his hopeful wife one day," have you heard that the local store, standing empty for so long, is taken over by a bright young businesswoman?"
Her dull and indifferent husband replied that he had not.
"But it is, it is," she replied excitedly.
Mr Dull-Husband made no reply.
"Don't you want to know her plans?" she cried with some impatience.
"Well, clearly you think it matters to your silly little head. .. so I'd better listen."
"Well, my dear, the rumour is that she has already set up a string of successful businesses in northern England, though how a woman can know anything about that is beyond me. She will move in herself next month."
"What is her name?" "Bingley."
"Is she married or single?"
"What a question! And none of your business. But her coming will be a fine thing for our five boys. "
"How so? How can it possibly affect them? "
"My dear love; those lazy boys need something to wake them up. There are bound to be jobs going."
"Is that her point in settling here? Surely as a woman she has simply taken a fancy to the place."
"Nonsense, my love, how little you've noticed the world has changed. She's got a first-rate degree and some sort of business qualification, I'm told. She surely needs one of our boys! Perhaps you might give her a call."
"Me? No. Perhaps you can take an interest. You still have your looks, after all. She may even offer you a job." "Oh, that's not likely. These new chances belong to the younger generation. But now you mention it, I think I'll go along all the same."
And Mrs Bennet went along. That was 10 years ago. She is now managing director of a FTSE-listed company.
... It would remain the case, of course, that Mrs Bennet would be one of very few women on the company board, that her salary would be lower than her male colleagues, her bonus of a more "female" dimension and her lifespan among the city's business leaders shorter than theirs. Still, she'd no doubt have enjoyed Davos—and might even have hobnobbed (攀谈) with influential figures.
1.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Austen was born 200 years ago.
B. Austen rewrote Pride and Prejudice.
C. Austen's updated work gains popularity.
D. Austen's success lies in her wisdom.
2.The underlined part in the passage suggests that Mrs. Bennet _________.
A. felt kind of worried and doubtful about Bingley
B. was extremely anxious to meet Bingley
C. had mixed feelings of admiration and surprise about Bingley
D. had a great curiosity about Bingley
3.What does the writer intend to tell us?
A. Women with brains can also be as successful as men.
B. Sex discrimination still exists nowadays.
C. Women have to pay a high price for success.
D. A judgment must be made free from prejudice.
