With environmentalists pointing to the use of coal, oil and other fossil fuels as adding to the problem of global warming, the world is rushing to find other more environmentally friendly energy sources. Many countries are looking to nuclear power as the answer to their energy needs. Those who support using nuclear power point to the fact that the process for creating nuclear power produces huge quantities of electricity without producing any greenhouse gases. It seems to be the safest and most environmentally safe method for producing the largest amount of power, much more than solar or wind energy sources.
However, despite the many advantages of nuclear power, there are many groups who strongly advise against the use of nuclear power. Some groups point to concerns about possible terrorist attacks on nuclear plants or possible nuclear accidents that might result in widespread disaster. However, strange as it seems, many of the strongest voices against nuclear power are actually environmentalists, who oppose nuclear power because they claim it results in more greenhouse gases.
It may seem impossible, but in fact both facts are true: nuclear production itself produces no greenhouse gases, but nuclear power does, in fact, lead to the production of many greenhouse gases. How is this possible? The actual production of nuclear power does not let off any greenhouse gases at all; this is the fact that most governments and nuclear power companies point to, and it is, indeed, correct. However, those who oppose nuclear power point out the bigger problem: building and maintaining the nuclear power stations, mining the material used to produce the nuclear power and getting rid of the nuclear waste all create greenhouse gases, the very thing that nuclear power is supposed to avoid. The final point that environmentalists point out is that nuclear power is not a long-term solution to energy. One day uranium, the resource needed for producing nuclear power, will be at an end, the same problem the world is facing with coal and oil today.
1.What are many countries relying on to satisfy their energy needs according to the passage?
A. Coal. B. Oil.
C. Nuclear power. D. Other fossil fuels.
2.What disadvantages relating to the use of nuclear power are mentioned in the passage?
A. No greenhouse gases.
B. Killing more plants.
C. Widespread disasters and more greenhouse gases.
D. Making other energy sources not function well.
3.What’s the writer’s attitude towards the use of nuclear power?
A. Optimistic. B. Indifferent(漠不关心).
C. Pessimistic. D. Objective(客观的).
4.Why do some environmentalists point out that nuclear power is not a long term solution to energy?
A. Because the resource for producing nuclear power will come to an end someday.
B. Because they think nuclear power gives off too many greenhouse gases.
C. Because the world is facing coal and oil shortages now.
D. Because more and more people are opposed to the use of nuclear power.

Nowadays, the most effective way to get power comes from burning fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas. They are less costly than other forms of energy. But burning fuels releases carbon dioxide, known as CO2 gas. Scientists agree that increasing amount of CO2 in Earth’s atmosphere is partly to blame for the rising temperature. It's clear the change in the atmosphere can have a big effect on the weather condition around the world.
However, keeping extra CO2 from entering the atmosphere is a difficult process. It’s not enough to advise people to burn the fuels in a clean way. As a result, scientists are looking for the best method for capturing the gas and storing it away from the atmosphere. Some of this research is taking place in Norway. The Technology Center in Mongstad (TCM) is the largest facility in the world for major testing of the CO2-capturing technology.
Tore Amundsen is its chairman. He says TCM has produced important information since it opened. The center is connected to a nearby electric power plant. It treats the waste gas from the plant using the chemical solvent (溶剂) which attracts the CO2 molecules. Then researchers take the solvent with the CO2 molecules and boil it. In this way, they can separate CO2 from the solvent and use the solvent again to capture more CO2. TCM can help capture 90 percent of the CO2 from the waste gas. With the current state of technology, it will increase the cost of electricity between perhaps 30% to 40% when the technology is applied to a power plant.
Experts say the best way to store the captured CO2 gas is to place it below the surface of the ground. Scientists can use the pumping technology to put it into areas left empty after the removal of oil or natural gas. But TCM does not pump the CO2 it captures. Instead, it releases the gas into the atmosphere. Tore Amundsen says only highly developed industrial nations can afford the pumping technology. So far, only Canada has a power plant that pumps CO2 gas. In total, there are just a few similar power plants in the world.
1.What can we learn about the CO2 gas?
A.It is usually found in coal.
B.It leads to world climate change.
C.It is a new kind of energy.
D.It does good to the atmosphere.
2.Scientists want to deal with CO2 gas by_________.
A.sending it into the atmosphere
B.finding clean fuels to use
C.collecting it with technology
D.stopping people from burning fuels
3.Which of the following is TRUE about TCM?
A.It works well in treating the waste gas.
B.It’s the only center to study the CO2 gas.
C.It was set up by Tore Amundsen.
D.It helps the power plant save a lot of money.
4.According to experts, the captured CO2 gas________.
A.can be used with oil or natural gas
B.should be put underground
C.must be allowed to go into the air
D.should stay in the chemical solvent

“As easy as falling off a log” is often used to describe a job that does not take much effort. You might hear a student say to her friend that her spelling test was “as easy as falling off a log”. 1. . It is easier to fall off the log than to stay on it.
2. . One is “easy as pie”. Nothing is easier than eating a piece of sweet, juicy pie unless it is a “piece of cake”.
“Piece of cake” is another expression that means something is extremely easy to do. A friend might tell you that his new job was a “piece of cake”.
Another expression is “as easy as shooting fish in a barrel”. It is hard to imagine why anyone would want to shoot fish in a barrel. But, clearly, fish in a barrel would be much easier to shoot than fish in a stream. 3. .
Sometimes, things that come to us easily, also leave us just as easily. In fact, there is an expression —“easy come, easy go”—that recognizes this. 4. . Easy come, easy go.
When life itself is easy, when you have no cares or problems, you are on “Easy Street”. Everyone wants to live on that imaginary street.
5. . It means to treat a person kindly or gently, especially in a situation where you might be expected to be angry with him. A wife might urge her husband to “go easy on” their son, because the boy did not mean to damage the car.
A. If you ever tried to walk on a fallen tree log, you understand what the expression means.
B. You may win a lot of money in a lottery, then spend it all in a few days.
C. Every people has its own way of saying things, its own special expressions.
D. Another “easy” expression is to “go easy on a person”.
E. There are several other expressions that mean the same thing.
F. And one last expression, one that means do not worry or work too hard.
G. In fact, it would be as easy as “falling off a log”.
