We have dreams almost every night. Do you ever notice the colors of your dreams? Do you dream in black and white or do you dream in yellow, red and green?
New research suggests that the type of television you watched as a child has a great effect on the color of your dreams.
While almost all people under 25 dream in color, thousands of people over 55, all of whom were brought up with black and white TV sets, often dream in monochrome(黑白画面)。
“It suggests there could be a critical period in our childhood when watching films has a big impact on the way dreams are formed”, said Eva Murzyn, a psychology student at Dundee University in Britain who carried out the study.
Research from 1915 through the 1950s suggested that the vast majority of dreams are in black and white. But the tide(潮流) turned in the sixties, and later results suggested that up to 83 percent of dreams contain some color.
Since this period also marked the transition(过渡) between black-and-white film and TV and Technicolor(印染法彩色),an obvious explanation was that the media had been painting people’s dreams. However, there weren’t any firm conclusions.
But now Miss Murzyn believes she has proven the link. She made a survey of more than 60 people, half of whom were over 55 and half of whom were under 25.
She asked the volunteers to answer a questionnaire on the color of their dreams and their childhood exposure to film and TV.
She then analyzed her own data. Only 4.4 percent of the under-25s’ dreams were black and white. The over-55s who had had access to color TV and film during their childhood also reported a very low proportion of just 7.3 percent.
But the over-55s who only had access to black-and –white media reported dreaming in black and white about a quarter of the time.
Even though they would have spent only a few hours a day watching TV or films, their attention and emotion would have been heightened during this time, leaving a deeper imprint on their mind, Miss Murzyn told the New Scientist.
“The crucial time is between three and ten when we all begin to have the ability to dream”, she said.

B. people over 55 always dream in monochrome
C. watching TV or films probably affects dream color

A. Miss Murzyn thought she has proved the connection between dream color and TV and films.

Time is on your side
How frequently do you say “I don’t have time”? Quite often, I guess. Every time we say those words, they make us feel weak and out of control. You are in control of your hours and your life. 1.
I know it’s not as easy as simply turning off the TV. But here are two steps that will help you take back control and get time on your side.
★2.
Be honest: do you spend an hour or two visiting Weixin and QQ every day? Are you spending time with people that you don’t really like just to please them? Are there meetings you attend that you can politely refuse?
It’s time to get real about the hours that add up to a lot of dissatisfying nothing. Think how you can cancel daily activities that are not useful. 3.
★Change your language.
Words matter. They have power. Saying “I don’t have time” is an excuse for not wanting to do something. Here are some good, empowering alternatives (选择):
“I choose not to start that project until next year.”
“4.”
“I’d love to go out this weekend but have important work I need to do first.”
Get better at saying no. 5. Use little pockets of time (friend running late, car stuck in traffic, meeting ending 10 minutes early) to do some productive thinking. All these things can add up over time more than you believe!
A. Identify your blocks.
B. But you are likely wasting a lot of it!
C. I really don’t have enough time to do it.
D. Replace them with things that satisfy you.
E. Take no notice of all those unimportant messages on your phone.
F. I’d love to read that book — I’ll get to it after my homework is complete!

Are you an optimist? Do you look at your glass and see it as half full? Do you believe that every cloud has a silver lining and that generally things turn out for the best? Do you believe that if something is meant to be, it will be? If you reply “yes” to all of these questions, then you are an optimist. You probably are enthusiastic, cheerful and outgoing. You may well be successful at work and in love.
But you may be misguided because things don’t turn out for the best. You may believe that when one door closes another one opens (For example, you may fail to land a new job, but another chance will come around soon). Wrong. When one door closes, another door slams in your face. That’s bitter reality.
Now a book has been published which confirms what we pessimists(悲观者) have suspected all along. It’s called The Positive Power of Defensive Pessimism. Its author argues that defensive pessimism can lead to positive results. Defensive pessimism is a strategy used to manage fear, anxiety and worry. Defensive pessimists prepare for things by setting low outcomes for themselves. They carefully consider everything that may go wrong and plan for ways to handle these problems. And this gives them a sense of control. Lawrence Sanno, a psychology professor, says, “What’s interesting about defensive pessimists is that they tend to be very successful people, so their low opinion of the situation’s outcomes is not realistic. They use it to motivate themselves to perform better.”
So far, so good. This is not rocket science. Defensive pessimists prepare carefully and consider what might go wrong, whether at work, on a date or even in a sports game. It makes sense to have a backup plan. There are many sayings in English urging caution. For example, “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket”, and “Don’t count your chickens until they hatch.” To have a confident and optimistic approach to life’s problems is good. But listen to what Woody Alien, the American comedian says, “Confidence is what you have before you understand the problem.”
There are pros and cons to being an optimist and a pessimist. Don’t feel bad if you see the glass half empty. You are a realist. But lighten up and hook up with someone who sees the same glass half full.

Do you blank out or feel so nervous in exams that you have trouble writing answers to questions that you knew just last night? If so, you likely have a case of test anxiety.
But, don’t be afraid. By recognizing the problem, you are taking the first step towards overcoming it.
Believe it or not, a touch of nervousness can sharpen your mind, allowing you to perform more quickly. This is because under stress, the body releases the hormone adrenaline (肾上腺素), which prepares it for something important that will happen. However, too much anxiety can result in sleeplessness, loss of appetite before tests, and poor performance. Some people might feel hot and tired. With great anger they often shout or complain for no reason.
If you worry a lot or are a perfectionist, you are more likely to have trouble with test anxiety. Those who have prepared poorly for a test or have had negative experiences taking tests may also experience test anxiety.
When you feel a storm of anxiety coming on, stop what you’re doing and make your mind a blank. If possible, actually tell yourself to “STOP!” This will get your mind off the stress. Then think of being at a place of comfort and let your body relax. As you continue the test, find questions you know the answers to and answer them first. This will help restore your confidence.
Important of all, talk to yourself using positive languages. Make it a habit to replace each negative thought with a logical reason. For example: “I've studied hard and I know the material, so I'm ready to do the best I can.”
Another thing you can do is to learn to accept mistakes. In fact, they can be valuable learning opportunities.
Last but not least, start test preparation early-three to five days ahead of the quiz or test. After all, good study habits and skills-for example, time management and notetaking will give you the feeling that you are in control.
1.What is probably the best title of the passage? ( No more than 10 words )
