At long last, Stefano Boeri Architects’ brilliant Bosco Verticale towers are finally completed. The “world’s first vertical forest” consists of a fantastic pair of costly towers that add nearly 2.5 acres of lush vegetation to the sky line of Milan, a city notorious (声名狼藉的) for its air pollution. 1. Like a pair of green lungs, its forested appearance of 21,000 plants will absorb CO2, control noise pollution, lessen the urban heat island effect, and create oxygen and favorable micro-climates.
The Bosco Verticale mixed-use towers are constructed with a $2.5 billion public-private investment as part of the re-development of Milan’s Porta Nuova district. The towers, measuring 260 feet and 367 feet, house 800 trees between 9 and 30 feet tall, over 4,000 shrubs (灌木) and 15,000 ground cover plants. Bosco Verticale is created with LEED Gold Certification (绿色建筑黄金认证) in mind. 2.
The buildings shrub have welcomed their first residents. 3. A fast-growing bird population has already begun to nest in Bosco Verticale’s rich leaves, of which over a hundred different species of trees and shrubs are represented. 4.
The superstructure is also selected for the world famous International Highrise Building Award as one of the five most beautiful and original high-rises in the world that is completed. 5.
A. “We take great pride in this project, which may earn us an award” says Boeri.
B. Boeri is currently in China, where he plans to build another Bosco Verticale project.
C. It is also equipped with a gray water recycling and irrigation system.
D. However, Bosco Verticale will be more than just a beautiful sight to enjoy.
E. “The real key to this project is biodiversity,” says Boeri.
F. It is also well received by the Chinese experts in the field.
G. But those families aren’t the only ones to call the vertical forest home.

Stefano Boeri, the Italian architect, famous for his Bosco Verticale, a group of tree-covered skyscrapers in Milan, introduced his new plans to pioneer a similar project in the Chinese city of Nanjing.
The Chinese version of Boeri’s Bosco Verticale, or vertical forest, will be his first project in Asia. The project will consist of two neighboring towers that will be coated with 23 different species of trees and more than 2,500 kinds of bushes hanging down the sides of the buildings. The structures will be built with the ability to house offices and will feature a 247-room luxury hotel, as well as a museum and even a green architecture school. The towers are currently under construction and are set for completion within the next year.
But two buildings aren’t enough for the ambitious Boeri as he now has even bolder plans for China to create “forest cities” in a country that has become known as an urban center choking on poisonous gases and dust.
In an interview about his plans to “greenify” the city and country Boeri said, “We have been asked to design an entire city where you don’t only have one tall building, but you have 100 or 200 buildings of different sizes, all with trees and plants on the sides.” Boeri continued, “We are working very seriously on designing all the different buildings.I think they will start to build at the end of this year.By 2020 we could imagine having the first forest city in China.”
Although these towers will lend a huge hand in decreasing air pollution in China’s eastern city, Boeri has said, it will take more than a pair of tree-covered skyscrapers to really solve China’s pollution crisis. This is why the Italian architect hopes to repeat his design in other parts of the country, as well as in other places around the world.

I.M. Pei, the Chinese-American, who was regarded as one of the last great modernist architects, has died at the age of 102.
Although he worked mostly in the United States, Pei will always be remembered for a European project: His redevelopment of the Louvre Museum in Paris in the 1980s. He gave us the glass and metal pyramid in the main courtyard, along with three smaller pyramids and a vast subterranean (地下的) addition to the museum entrance.
Pei was the first foreign architect to work on the Louvre in its long history, and initially his designs were fiercely opposed. But in the end, the French — and everyone else — were won over.
Winning the fifth Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1983, he was thought as giving the 20th century “some of its most beautiful inside spaces and outside forms. His talent and skill in the use of materials approach the level of poetry.”
After studying architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard, Pei set up his own architectural practice in New York in 1955.
Designing the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum in 1964 established him as a name. His East Building of the National Gallery of Art in Washington in 1978 changed people’s ideas of a museum. The site was an odd trapezoid (梯形) shape. Pei’s solution was to cut it in two. The resulting building was dramatic, light and elegant — one of the first crowd-pleasing cathedrals of modern art.
Though known as a modernist, and notable for his forms based on arrangements of simple geometric (几何的) shapes, he once urged Chinese architects to look more to their architectural tradition rather than designing in a western style.
In person, I.M. Pei was good-humored, charming and unusually modest. His working process was evolutionary, but innovation (创新) was never an intended goal.
“Stylistic originality is not my purpose,” he said. “I want to find the originality in the time, the place and the problem.”

A.It was criticized by the French.
B.It turned out to be a success.
C.It made the Louvre Museum look strange.

2.What can we learn from the underlined sentence in paragraph 4?
A.He is a master in applying materials.

At your next meeting, wait for a pause in conversation and try to measure how long it lasts.
Among English speakers, chances are that it will be a second or two at moat. But while this pattern may be universal, our awareness of silence differs dramatically across cultures.
What one culture considers a confusing or awkward pause may be seen by others as a valuable moment of reflection and a sign of respect for what the last speaker has said. Research in Dutch(荷兰语) and also in English found that when a silence in conversation stretches to four seconds, people start o feel uneasy, In contrast, a separate study of business meetings found that Japanese people are happy with silences of 8.2 seconds-nearly twice as long as in Americans’ meetings.
In Japan. it is recognized that the best communication is when you don’t speak at all. It's already a failure to understand each other by peaking because you’re repairing that failure by using word.
In the US, it may start from the history of colonial(殖民地的) America as a crossroads of many different races. When you have a complex of difference. it's hard to develop common understanding unless you talk and there’s understandably a kind of anxiety unless people are verbally devoted to developing a common life. This applies also to some extent lo London.
In contrast, when there’s more homogeneity, perhaps it s easier or some kinds of silence to appear. For example, among your closest friends and family it's easier to sit in silence than with people you 're less well acquainted with.
1.Which of the following people might have the longest silence in conversation?
A. The Dutch B. Americans
C. 'The English. D. The Japanese
2.What might the Japanese agree with in conversation?
A. Speaking more gives the upper hand
B. Speak out what you have in your mind.
C. Great minds think alike without words
D. The shorter talking silence, the better
3.What can we learn from the text?
A. A four-second silence in conversation is universal
B. It 's hand for Americans to reach n common agreement
C. English speakers are more talkative than Japanese speakers.
D. The closer we and our family are, the easier the silence appears
4.What does the underlined word "homogeneity in the last paragraph mean?
