Have you ever wished you could solve complex math problems without thinking? What about learning to play the piano in just three days? Or mastering several foreign languages within a month?
Eddie Morra, the main character in the movie Limitless can do all these things. But he isn’t Superman or Harry Potter. Eddie has taken pills called NZT.
Thriller Limitless came out in China on October 13. In the movie, Eddie is faced with “writer’s block”. He hasn’t written a single word of a novel, and his deadline has passed. And there’s more bad news: his girlfriend breaks up with him. By chance, Eddie runs into a relative who is a drug dealer. He gives Eddie some pills called NZT that allow people to make use of 100 percent of their brains. With the magic pills, Eddie’s life changes completely. He can recall everything he has ever read, seen or heard. He gains a sixth sense that allows him to predict future events. He even becomes a kungfu master by simply memorizing actions in Bruce Lee’s movie.
Before long he has finished his novel, won back his girlfriend and stepped into the financial world. He becomes rich incredibly quickly and is soon employed by a powerful Wall Street company. However, bad side effects are just around the corner. The effects of the pill last for only one or two days, and Eddie has to find more supplies of the pills. Meanwhile, the pills start to have other effects on him. Eddies’ mind loses the ability to control the actions of his body. What does destiny hold for him? Will he be able to go back to his normal life?
“Eddie’s fate turns out to be a barbed (讽刺的) joke… a sharp-eyed comic fable for an age of greed (贪婪)and speed.” writes A. O. Scott, a movie critic with the New York Times.
The drug isn’t real-----yet, some researchers say such memory-enhancing drugs might not be far off. Would you take such a pill despite its side effects? Is the ability to remember everything a blessing or a curse?

A.He can easily call everyone in the world. |
B.He can expect what will happen next with his sixth sense. |

Have you ever wished you could grow fresh fruit in your garden but worry about there not being enough space, or it won’t look pretty, or it’s too difficult?
What if I was to tell you that even a beginner can successfully grow a wide variety of fruit from apples and pears to cherries, blueberries and raspberries, and possibly even figs or nectarines?
The first thing you need to know: the sweeter the fruit, the more sun it will require. If you have a sunny wall it’s an ideal place to train a sun-loving fruit tree like a peach or an apricot. Plant the tree at the base of the wall but not too close (about 30cm is about right) in soil enriched with fertilizer (肥料). As it grows, splay (整枝) the branches evenly and attach them to the wall. As the plant grows gradually cut out old untidy branches and tie in new healthy branches. The idea of splaying or “fanning” is that as much sun as possible gets to the fruit, so it can ripen beautifully and maximize your crop.
Choose a variety that won’t grow too large. In slightly shadier spots you can grow gooseberries or raspberries. Most of these come in compact (紧凑的) varieties and can also be fan-trained against a wall if space is an issue.
I have a tiny orchard (果园) of space-saving apple, pear and plum trees bought as single vertical stems (茎) which I grow in pots. They grow to a maximum of 2m high and no wider than 45cm. My children love them! Simply cut back the side stems to about 10cm at this time of year and you’re good to go. Just remember that pot-grown plants rely totally on you for their food and water.
As a gardener I was quite late to fruit-growing, but I realized quickly that it becomes an addictive hobby. And as a complete bonus I’ve noticed a definite increase in my bee population over the past few years. There’s free food, and it’s good for the environment too. What could be better?
1.How does the author attract readers’ attention to the topic?
A. By making comparisons. B. By raising some questions.
C. By listing some general rules. D. By telling interesting stories.
2.What should you do to make your peach tree bear sweet fruit?
A. Do the splaying regularly. B. Use fertilizer frequently.
C. Choose some compact varieties. D. Plant the tree far from your wall.
3.What do we know about gooseberries and raspberries?
A. They are sun-lovers. B. They are space savers.
C. They can grow very large. D. They may die from splaying.
4.How are pot-grown fruit trees different from field-grown ones?
A. They bear more fruits. B. They are more dependent.
C. They need more water and food. D. They are more popular with kids.

Have you ever wished you could see in the dark as well as an animal? In action movies, we often see characters wearing special glasses that reveal(显示)things that can't be seen in darkness. Everything looks green, but we can see the shapes and outlines clearly. As a matter of fact, this is somewhat similar to the way animals' night vision (视力) works.
You may have noticed eyeshine in pictures of animals, or seen it for yourself when light hits an animal's eyes. Dogs, cats, and many other animals have tissue (组织) called the tapetum lucidum(光神经纤维层) in each eye. The purpose of this tissue is reflect (反射) light deeper into the eye. For many animals, it leads to their excellent night vision, and it helps them hunt.
Different types of animals have different colors of eyeshine. The light reflecting back from the eyes of dogs and cat is likely to be yellow. Rats and birds usually have eyes that shine red. Other animals’ eyes may reflect white, yellow, green, or pink light. In each case, the color is related to the type of cells that make up the tapetum lucidum, as well as the chemicals inside the cells.
Eyeshine has the function of improving animals' night vision, but humans have found other uses for it. For example, when people are searching for certain types of animals, their eyeshine may be helpful in recognizing or discovering them. Also, eyeshine has inspired humans to invent substance (物质) that reflect light at night. Strips containing this substance are used to warn us of safety risks such as raised parts of roads. Even though humans cannot see so well at night, we have still found ways to benefit from this amazing animal feature.
1.How does the tapetum lucidum help animals' night vision?
A. It sends out light in the dark. B. It makes everything appear green.
C. It reflects light back into the eyes. D. It enables them to see colors at night.
2.How does the author mainly develop Paragraph 3?
A. By providing reasons. B. By giving examples.
C. By following space order. D. By doing experiments.
3.What can we learn about scientists' research on eyeshine?
A. They've put it to practical uses.
B. They're using it to protect some animals.
C. They're trying to include more animal types.
D. They've invented special glasses based on it.
4.What is the text mainly about?
A. How humans' night vision works. B. Different colors of animals' eyes.
C. How animals see in the dark. D. Eyeshine and its benefits.

Can a computer think? That depends on what you mean by “think”. If solving a math problem is “thinking”, then a computer can “think” and do so much faster than a man. Of course, most mathematical problems can be solved by repeating certain process over and over again. Even the simple computers of today can do that. It is frequently said that computers solve problems only because they are“programmed” to do so. They can only do what men have them do. One must remember that human beings also can only do what they are “programmed” to do. Our genes “program” us the moment the fertilized ovum(受精卵) is formed, and our possible abilities are limited by that “program”. Our “program” is so much more enormously complex, though, that we might like to define “thinking” in terms of the creativity that goes into writing a great symphony or in developing a brilliant scientific theory. In that sense, computers certainly can’t think and neither can most humans.
Surely, though, if a computer can be made complex enough, it can be as creative as we. If it could be made as complex as a human brain, it could be equal to a human brain and do whatever a human brain can do. To suppose anything else is to suppose that there is more to the human brain than the matter that composes it. The brain is made up of cells in a certain arrangement. If anything else is there, no signs of it have ever been discovered. To duplicate (复制) the material complexity of the brain is therefore to duplicate everything about it.
But how long will it take to build a computer complex enough to duplicate the human brain? Perhaps not as long as some think. Long before we approach a computer as complex as our brain, we will perhaps build a computer that is at least complex enough to design another computer more complex than itself. This more complex computer could design one still more complex and so on and so on. In other words, once we pass a certain critical point, the computers take over and there is a “complexity explosion”. In a very short time thereafter, computers may exist that not only duplicate the human brain but go far beyond it.
1.In what sense does the writer think that humans are programmed?
A. Their characteristics, powers, etc. are fixed before birth.
B. He thinks a man’s abilities are not limited, as a computer’s are.
C. In the sense that humans will always be better than computers.
D. Computers must be operated by men, but man can operate by himself.
2.What does the writer mean by saying that the average human being is unable to ‘think’?
A. It is not true. All humans can ‘think’ in all sense.
B. Human beings fail to think as fast as a computer.
C. Most people don’t have great creative ability.
D. Something has been wrong with his genetic program.
3.What is the ‘critical point’ mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. The point at which a computer is an exact copy of a human brain.
B. When one computer is itself clever enough to design a better one.
C. When a computer can be made as creative as we are.
D. When the computers destroy each other in an explosion.
4.The word ‘explosion’ mentioned in the last paragraph means ________.
