We look ahead to London’s art and exhibition openings and select the must-see shows.
Double science
It's a big month for the Science Museum, with a new gallery and an exhibition opening. The Science City gallery tells the story of London between 1550 and 1800 when major scientific breakthroughs were happening across the city—from Newton’s laws of physics to the birth of microscopes allowing us to see the tiny creatures that live among us. If that isn’t enough there’s also an exhibition on how art and science have worked closely together over the centuries and continue to do so today.
Science City 1550—1800: The Linbury Gallery at the Science Museum. Opens 12 September—13 October, free.
The Art of Innovation: From Enlightenment to Dark Matter at the Science Museum. 25 September—26 January, free but ticketed.
Are you worried yet?
We all suffer from anxiety. Artists look into this through artworks that bring to light their own anxieties or how people living with anxiety manage. The exhibition also covers what anxiety would look like if it could be visualised in light or sound—something we imagine to be impossible.
On Edge: Living in an Age of Anxiety at Science Gallery. 19 September—19 January, free.
Climbing the walls
No artist has made a bigger career out of placing sculptures of human figures all over the place. Antony Gormley, the artist behind the Angel of the North and sculptures standing all over London, takes over the Royal Academy of Arts with a blockbusting (轰动一时的) exhibition. This is the hot art ticket in town.
Antony Gormley at Royal Academy of Arts. 21 October—3 December, £18—22.
1.What is on show in the Science City gallery?
A.Some of the greatest physicists. B.The stories of the London development.
C.The prediction of the future science. D.Some of the great achievements in history.
2.Which exhibition allows visitors to get a feeling in a new way?
A.The Art of Innovation. B.On Edge.
C.Royal Academy of Arts. D.Science City 1550—1800.
3.When can visitors see these four exhibitions altogether?
A.In January. B.In September. C.In October. D.In December.

Researchers have been looking forward to using tiny flying robots to settle important tasks. The various machines could be used to help astronauts on space missions, and even to help bees with plant pollination(授粉). However, fitting the heavy electric equipment that is used to power and control the wings into the tiny robot has been challenging. Now thanks to RoboBee X-Wing—the world’s lightest aerial vehicle that can fly not tied to a power source.
Made by Harvard researchers, the insect-inspired robot weighs only 259 milligrams, has four wings whose distance is 3.5 centimeters, and stands 6.5 centimeters high. Its four small wings, which can flap up(拍动) to 170 times a second, are controlled by actuators(驱动器). They become small when the electricity passes through them. Six small solar cells, fitted above the wings to prevent them from disturbing the flight, provide the power.
RoboBee X-Wing is powered by six solar cells. To test its flying abilities, the team, led by doctor Noah Jafferis and PhD student Elizabeth Helbling, exposed the RoboBee X-Wing’s solar cells to LED lighting. To their delight, the tiny robot’s wings began to flap, and it rose, keeping a flight for about half a second. Though the robot lost its flight ability as soon as the power source was turned off, its short flight was cheered for its huge effect on the future of tiny flying robots.
However, though the current RoboBee X-Wing is a step in the right direction, it is not quite ready for main time. The researchers also hope to experiment with other power sources, such as batteries, sun light or radio frequency signals, and to add more advanced “brains” and sensor systems to navigate and complete tasks independently.
1.What can we know about small flying robots according to the first paragraph?
A.They are made to do ordinary tasks by scientists.
B.They can be used only for very dangerous task.
C.They can be powered directly by the energy of the sun.
D.It’s not easy to fit the heavy electric equipment into them.
2.Why is RoboBee X-Wing considered having a big effect on the future of tiny flying robots?
A.Because it is ready for the instant use.
B.Because it can take off and fly out of control.
C.Because it can fly not tied to a power source.
D.Because it can settle important tasks.
3.Which of the following is TRUE about RoboBee X-Wing?
A.It can’t be used in crowded places.
B.It can be used for giving directions.
C.It can use radio signals to power itself.
D.It still can’t be used widely at present.
4.In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A.Entertainment. B.Science.
C.Education. D.Health.

With the New Year just months away, you are probably looking forward to watching the wonderful fireworks(烟花) shows. Unfortunately, the over ten million blind Americans, and scores more around the world, have never been able to experience this joyful celebration. That may change soon thanks to Feeling Fireworks, a tactile(可触摸的) fireworks experience invented by the masterminds at the Disney Research Lab in Switzerland.
To experience the show, users stand in front of a large screen, which is made of special material. They then place their hands at the base of the screen and move them around to feel the fireworks. Alternatively, their hands can be placed in the center of the screen, where the initial explosions happen, and then moved across to explore other fireworks.
As the fireworks begin to explode, one of five nozzles(喷嘴) at the back of the screen starts to send out water, creating shaking movements. One specializes in the “blooming(开花) flower effect,” while another reproduces the“crackle(噼啪声)” effect. The rest take care of rockets and explosions. A computer controls the timing, while a Microsoft Kinect camera tracks the person’s movement. According to the inventors, Feeling Fireworks allows users to experience “tactile fireworks that are similar to physical fireworks happening in the sky.”
First appearing at the User Interface Software and Technology conference held in Quebec City, Canada from October 22 to October 25, 2017, the low-cost technology is still in its early stage, with only a 66 percent success rate. However, the team plans to continue-improving the experience and believes the day when everyone will be able to enjoy the thrill of fireworks shows is not far. When ready, Feeling Fireworks will initially be available only at Disney theme parks, and then hopefully, at fireworks shows worldwide.
