Recently, some concerns have been raised about the health of the world's banana plants. Many media reports have said that bananas may completely disappear in the coming ten years.
Bananas are one of the world's most important food crops. They are also the fourth most valuable export. Bananas do not grow from seeds. Instead, they grow from existing plants. Bananas are threatened by disease because all the plants on a farm are copies of each other. They all share the same genetic weaknesses.
For example, the Cavendish banana is most popular in American markets. It is an important export crop. However, some kinds of fungus (真菌) organisms easily infect the Cavendish. Black Sigatoka disease affects the leaves of Cavendish banana plants. The disease is controlled on large farms by putting chemicals on the plant's leaves. Farmers put anti-fungal chemicals on their crops up to once a week.
Another fungal disease is more serious. Panama disease attacks the roots of the banana plant. There is no chemical treatment for this disease. Infected plants must be destroyed. Panama disease has affected crops in Southeast Asia, Australia and South Africa. There is concern that it may spread to bananas grown in the Americas. This could threaten an important export product for Central and South America.
The International Network for the Improvement of Banana and Plantain, whose headquarter lies in France, supports research on bananas. The group says that more research must be done to develop improved kinds of bananas.
The group says that fungal diseases mainly affect only one kind of banana. In fact, there are five-hundred different kinds of bananas. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization says the Cavendish banana represents only ten percent of world production.
The UN agency says farmers should grow different kinds of bananas. This protects against diseases that affect only one kind. Experts warn that disease may cause the Cavendish banana to disappear. This has already happened to one popular banana because of its genetic weakness against disease. (words: 335)

In 2006, one of the biggest music feuds(积怨) in history ended when Apple (the iPad and iPhone company) and Apple Corps (The Beatles' record label) settled their differences. The argument had been over the ''apple'' logos they both have as part of their trademarks(商标). Shortly after, The Beatles' music was launched for download. While the band's hit songs didn't make as big an impact as commentators(评论员) lad predicted, the event still led to plenty of press coverage.
But iTunes isn't the only technology linked to The Beatles. The Beatles: Rock Band is a video game for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii which allows you to become The Beatles. Released in 2009, the game includes a drum kit, guitar and microphone so you can sing and play along to your favourite songs. Not surprisingly, the game was a huge success, selling more than two million units. A remastered box set of all The Beatles' albums was released on the same day, which also sold well.
Films about The Beatles are also popular. Recent movies include Nowhere Boy, which is a film about the life of John Lennon. It's directed by Sam Taylor-Wood and stars Aaron Johnson and Kristin Scott Thomas.
Magazines and newspapers are still often filled with Beatles stories, and the zebra crossing near Abbey Road recording studios(where the 1969 album of the same name was recorded), was ranked Grade II listing in 2010, which means it’ll be protected. This followed similar recognition for Abbey Road studios itself.
And the future for The Beatles? Well, the band could still top the charts as there are unreleased tracks that still haven't seen the light of day. A strange experimental track called Carnival of Light, and a 27-minute jam of Helter Skelter have never been heard by the public.
Will they ever be released?

In today's Ireland, it seems hard to imagine the grim(令人沮丧的) days of the 19th century when so many of the population starved, or that, in those days, many poor people had no clue how to prepare any food other than boil a potato. 1.
Tourism has made a vast difference to the standards of cooking in Ireland. Until recently there was hardly any tradition of eating out in many districts, except perhaps on very few occasions at a local hotel. Patterns of diet were old-styled, based firmly on 'meat and two vegetables' (somewhat overcooked), potatoes (of course) and large quantities of dairy produce. 2. Tourist demands for predictable, inexpensive fast-food are met, as everywhere, with hamburgers and pizzas - a better bet being fish and chips. But more sophisticated tastes have introduced whole foods and vegetarian restaurants (almost unheard of before), and a vast number of new restaurants, often French in style, have opened in the main tourist centres. Food 'events' such as Kinsale's Gourmet festival or Galway's Oyster Festival attract large numbers of visitors and reflect the new interest in food.
Whatever Irish cooking lacks in finesse(精细), it nearly always makes up for in plenty, and ingredients(成分) are of a high quality. 3.. One of its great specialities is soda bread. It is made with buttermilk and is served fresh and warm with every meal. Recently there has been a return to simple Irish foods such as stews(炖菜)and potato dishes.
4.A 'traditional Irish breakfast' is a plateful of bacon and eggs with soda and potato breads. Accommodation rates are nearly always quoted(报价) with a full breakfast included. 5.
A. So you might as well eat enough to keep you going all day and get your money's worth!
B. Home-grown produce includes rich dairy foods, beef, lamb and pork, and a great variety of seafood.
C. Eating out at weekends is traditional in most parts of Ireland.
D. Now things are very different.
E. Food produce is fresher.
F. One of the best-value meals in Ireland is breakfast.
G. Nowadays, it is quite possible to eat both well and heartily all over the island.

Heart disease is one of the major killers in the world today. Many who suffer from it must have heart transplants. However, it’s difficult to get a suitable heart donation, and even if a patient survives the wait, his or her body often rejects the heart.
But there is now new hope for sufferers of heart disease. According to a study published in the journal Advanced Science, researchers from Israel’s Tel Aviv University printed a 3D human heart on April 15.
“This is the first time anyone anywhere has successfully engineered and printed an entire heart,” professor Tal Dvir told CNN. Unlike the previous 3D-printed heart structure, the new heart is complete with cells, blood vessels, chambers and other structures a heart needs to function normally. But scientists still have more to figure out before the 3D-printed heart can be fitted into the body. For one thing, the experimental heart is only the size of a thumb. And, although it can contract like a muscle, it cannot pump out blood like a real one. At present, the heart prototype is like a tiny airplane that has all of the right parts, but can’t fly.
However, the development is still regarded as a major breakthrough in medicine.
In the experiment, the researchers turned human fat tissue into human heart tissue with stem cell technology. The tissue was then turned into “bio-ink” for a 3D printer to ensure that tissue in the heart came from the patients themselves. So ideally, if it were to be placed in the body of someone in need of a transplant, there would be less risk of organ rejection. “Patients will no longer have to wait for transplants or take medications to prevent their rejection,” researchers told USA Today. “Instead, the needed heart will be printed, fully personalized for every patient.”
But the scientists think that 3D printing can be used to create other human organs. They foresee a time when the 3D printing of organs will be an everyday medical practice. “Maybe, in 10 years, there will be organ printers in the finest hospitals around the world and these procedures will be conducted routinely,” Dvir said.
1.Why do scientists have to do further research before fitting the 3D-printed heart into the body?
A.Because the heart is incomplete.
B.Because the heart can’t pump out blood.
C.Because the heart is an airplane that can’t fly.
D.Because the heart can’t contract like a muscle.
2.What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A.The needed heart will be printed to meet every patient’s need.
B.The 3D printing of organs will be an unusual medical practice.
C.Dvir has a negative attitude towards the future of organ printers.
D.Patients will need medicines to stop their rejection for their heart transplant.
3.What can serve as the best title for the passage?
A.Organ printers in the hospitals.
B.How to get a suitable heart donation.
C.Heart disease: one of the major killers.
D.A 3D-printed heart: new hope for heart disease sufferers.

The United States estimates that about one out of every 10 people on the planet today is at least 60 years old. By 2050, it’s projected to be one out of 5. This means that not only will there be more old people, but there will be relatively fewer young people to support them.
Professor Richard Lee of the University of California at Berkeley says this aging of the world has a great effect on economics. “Population aging increases the concentration of population in the older ages and therefore it is costly,” he said.
Aging populations consume (消耗) more and produce less. With more people living longer, it could get expensive. But Mr. Lee says with continuing increases in worker productivity and smart planning, it can be manageable.
Societies have different methods for caring for the elderly, but each carries a cost. Generally, there are three types of support. Seniors can live off the wealth they gained when they were younger. They can rely on their family to take care of them, or they can rely on the government.
In industrialized nations, governments created publicly-funded (公共资助的) support systems. These worked relatively well until recent years, when aging population growth in places like the United States and Western Europe began to gradually weaken the systems finances. These nations now face some tough choices. Mr. Lee says the elderly in some of these countries must either receive less money, retire later or increase taxes to make the system continuable.
Most developing nations haven’t built this type of government-funded support, but have instead relied on families to care for their elderly. These nations also generally have a much younger population, which means their situation is not as urgent as more developed nations. But Mr. Lee says that doesn’t mean they can ignore the issue. “Third World countries should give very careful thought to this process, to population aging and how it may affect their economies — now, before population aging even becomes an issue,” he explained.
1.“Aging” in this text means .
A. there are more young people than old people
B. an increasing number of old people are dying
C. more and more young people are growing old
D. the percentage of old people in the world is increasing
2.What is Professor Richard Lee’s attitude towards population aging?
A. Indifferent. B. Optimistic.
C. Negative. D. Worried.
3.The publicly-funded support systems in industrialized nations.
A. are facing the risk of failing
B. have failed to provide support for the old
C. will be replaced by other support systems
D. have greatly affected the nations’ economies
4.We can infer from the text that developing nations.
A. should prepare for population aging
B. don’t see population aging as an issue
C. are facing urgent situations of population aging
D. have better ways to deal with population aging

At one time it was the dream of many little girls to become a nurse. Today, however, America is facing its worst nurse shortage since World War I. Recently about 2,000,000 nurses are needed and 60 percent of all hospitals in the US have shortages, large enough to threaten the quality of care provided. The demand for nurses spreads widely throughout the nursing field.
What has become of these women in white? The answer lies in not one but several causes. One possibility is the fact that women have greater career options. In the past, women who chose to work outside the home had two basic choices: nursing or teaching. Today, more women than ever are in the workforce, but their options have greatly increased. There are women doctors, lawyers, firefighters and police officers. In fact, women today are found in nearly every field of work. Nursing has been left behind, as women move on to jobs with higher pay and greater status. A woman or man in the nursing field is often looked down upon as“merely a nurse”. Teachers many be also at fault. Many high school students are actually away from nursing, told by teachers that they are“too bright to be a nurse”.
Americans are living longer than ever and requiring more medical attention. In fact, the number of elderly patients has almost doubled in the past twenty years. Obviously a larger population requires more nurses. AIDS and other diseases have caused more and more people to need nursing care. Usually fatal(致命的) diseases mean long hospital stay, that is to say, more nurses are needed to care for these patients. It is estimated that the demand for nurses will be doubled the supply in the coming ten years.
1.What does the second paragraph mainly talk about?
A. How teachers have influenced their students.
B. What has caused nurse shortage.
C. How nurses have been looked down upon.
D. Why women have chosen many different jobs.
2.The passage tells that high school teachers are at fault for .
A. not mentioning the worst nurse shortage in the US
B. introducing jobs with higher pay and greater status to their students
C. persuading the students not to be nurses
D. not asking the government to raise the nurses’ payment
3.The author writes the passage in order to .
A. warn people to pay more attention to the nursing problem
B. call on women to choose different kinds of jobs
C. tell us women’s free choices of jobs today
D. describe the unequal treatment of women in the US
4.It can be inferred from the passage that .
A. of all the hospitals in the world 60 percent more nurses are badly needed
B. women in the US have greater career choices than those in other countries
C. high school students think themselves too bright to be nurses
D. nursing used to be a popular job among women
