I happen to meet some American tourists at gate of the Summer Palace last week. I
greeted them with English and then we began to chat. I got to know they were college
student traveling in China. Most of us were fond of Chinese medicine. They were busy
taking pictures and were surprising at the changes that had taken place in the past few years. After that, we went boat and had a good time. We were exchanged our e-mail

To many Americans,Labor Day marks the end of the summer,a day off from work and school, and one last chance to relax. But Labor Day is much more than just a day off . It represents a very important victory for laborers everywhere. The holiday is a celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers.
More than a century ago, workers were forced to deal with harsh conditions. They were paid very little, and they often worked 10-to l2-hour days.Men, women and even small children were forced to work even when they were sick.Tired of long hours and dangerous conditions, workers began organizing themselves into labor unions. On top of fighting for higher pay and shorter workdays, they also fought for the rights of children. The workers wanted employers to place limits on the age of their workers so that small children were not overworked or hurt in factories.
A New York City carpenter named Peter McGuire is credited for coming up with the idea for Labor Day.In 1872,after working many hours under poor conditions, McGuire rallied 100,000 workers to go on strike. The workers marched through the streets of New York City, demanding a better work environment.McGuire spent a decade fighting for workers’ rights. In 1882,he proposed the idea to create a special holiday for workers. On Tuesday,September 5,1882.more than 10,000 workers hit the streets of New York City for the first ever Labor Day parade. Two years later the celebration was moved to the first Monday in September. And in 1894,Congress passed a law making Labor Day a national holiday.
Americans celebrated the first Labor Day holiday with a parade, picnics and fireworks.Today, many people hit the road to enjoy the last of their summer vacation.Others enjoy the long weekend with picnics, backyard barbecues or just rest and relaxation. However you spend Labor Day,remember that the holiday is a time to pay tribute (致敬)to the workers who have made America what it is today.

At the end of last summer my parents’ house in Tunstall went up in flames. Several months on, we’re still trying to find out exactly what happened, but my parents John and Carole were out when more than half the house was burned to the ground. What was left behind needed to be pulled down and most of the things that were not actually destroyed were so smoke-damaged that they would have to be thrown away.
My parents were both teachers and not the kind of people to fill their house with expensive furniture, so most of their belongings were memories-----including photos and the tracksuit(运动服) that Dad was given when he carried the Olympic torch (火炬). But what really upset me was not the loss of these things.
Dad had an album(唱片) for every occasion. Once his car got broken into and he was more upset that his cassettes had been nicked(划伤) than about all the rest of the damage. So when I was considering doing something to help after the fire, I immediately thought about his music. We couldn’t get the old photos back, but we could replace his CDs and records. Then I started a little page about my dad on the blogging site Tumblr.
Within a few days, news of what had happened spread by word of mouth, and I was getting messages from friends I hadn’t spoken to for years. I also heard from Dad’s mates and even from people neither of us had ever met. Soon packages arrived from all over the country. I expected 100CDs if we were lucky, but his new collection would now run into the thousands!
On Christmas Day, all the records, tapes and CDs were packed into a beautiful box, which of course, was for my dad. A lot of them came from his previous students and he was touched to realize what an effect he had had on their lives. Eventually , he told me, “What could have been a bad Christmas has been a very good one.”

A. His tracksuit. B. The Olympic torch.
C. The old photos. D. His music collection.
3.We can infer from the text that John_______.
A. was a very popular teacher
B. had a hard time last Christmas
C. sang a lot for various occasions
D. lost interest in all things after the fire
4.What does the author probably try to tell us in the text?
A. One father is more than a hundred school masters.
B. Music washes away from the heart the dust of everyday life.
C. The world is full of people happy to do something for someone.
D. Accidents may happen to everyone if they are not careful enough.

Last weekend I went to the Summer Palace as usually. At about noon, I was enjoying my reading near a lake while suddenly I hear someone crying for help. I went up to see what was happening. I was shocking to find a little child struggling in the water in the distance while many peoples were standing by without doing anything. Without any hesitation, I had pushed through the crowd as I took off my coat, but jumped into the water quickly. I managed to reach him and carried him back to safety. To his great relief, the kid was saved. I was proud what I had done. I wish everyone could give the hand when someone else is in need.
