Letter to My Daughter (Hardcover $10. 00)
This book of essay and poems by Maya Angelou, a respectable American poet, is written for "the daughter she never had" —the millions of women, both young and old, who she considers to be her "family". From the viewpoint of a caring, older relative, this book contains lessons taken from her own life experiences, including the birth of her only child, a son, as well as the development and loss of friendship.
Ordinary Light (Paperback $6. 46)
"She left us at night,” Tracy K. Smith, a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, writes in the first sentence in Ordinary Light. She gives a description of her mother's last days and moments, and her own private farewell. She moves on to search for her mother through memories. She remembers her as a steady presence during visits to grandparents, while spending time with her much-older sisters and brothers. Ordinary Light is a memory, a discovery, a blessing.
A Room of One’s Own (Hardcover $19. 48)
This essay by English writer Virginia Woolf is based on her several lectures given to two women's colleges at Cambridge University in 1928. In it, Woolf describes that it's situation not talent alone that allows men to be more successful at writing. Women, in other words, spend so much time cooking, cleaning ? and tending to their children that they have no time left for art. To write well, therefore, a woman must have "a room of her own". While on its surface, this essay appears to be only about writing, it is actually about wealth and class, freedom and imprisonment (囚禁),and the power struggle between sexes.

A letter to my children on their first day of school
Dear Olivia and Evan,
As I opened my eyes this morning, the realization that you will be starting a new school year at a new school today controlled my mind for a moment. As we went about our morning routine (例行事务), I thought of so many things I wanted to say to you.
As I quietly entered your room and softly kissed you awake—I wanted to tell you that I know what it’s like to be the new kid. I understand worrying about finding your way both physically and socially. You’ll spend a lifetime finding your way. 1.
As I stood at the bathroom door while you brushed your teeth—I wanted to tell you to try not to look so nervous. 2. It is said a picture is worth a thousand words. I believe a smile is worth at least that much.
3.—I wanted to tell you if at any moment today you find yourself in an uncomfortable situation, just breathe. You’ll be surprised how a couple of deep breaths can help you see things in a whole new light.
As we got in the car—I wanted to tell you not everyone will have things in common with you. 4. They may pleasantly surprise you.
As I drove the few blocks to school—I wanted to tell you to listen when the teacher speaks, when someone new talks about themselves, etc. 5.
As you got out of the car I gave you each a kiss and a hug and said — “Just be yourself, and remember how much I love you. I’ll be waiting to hear all about your experiences this afternoon.”
I realized that’s really all you needed to hear.

With this letter I want to give up on my kitchen duties, until there is clear evidence of mutual respect(互相尊重)within the home.
For years it has been thought that I will be the one to pick up the dropped socks, turn off lights, turn on the dishwasher. But I reached my breaking point this weekend.Everyone was happy when the dog found a piece of bone. He played with it,carried it around and dropped it.You all watched, took photos, had fun and then went away.I was left finishing the lunch tidy-up,my heart warmed by all your laughter.
Until I came across the piece of fruit in some dog hair in the middle of the carpet. You had all seen it and walked away.Did anyone really want to pick it up?I don't mind walking the dog and bathing the cat.We have chosen to look after them.I'm building a family,a home filled with love.
But look at you now! My husband, with your job growing, each step forward, you have more challenges to conquer(战胜).My children, wonderful teenagers and young adults growing into yourselves, you are living your free lives.I love you all more than anything else in this world. But something went wrong—I became static(静止的).I became less the heart of the family, more the caretaker.
We are a family,a unit that lives and loves in a mutually supportive way.I'm inviting you to step up and join in. My position is open for discussion but never again will I play the role of cook and bottle washer.I will continue to cook at times—I love to do so—but only when I have the time.I have a life to live as well.

Can you understand the beginning of this essay(短文)?
“My smmr hols wr CWOT. B4, we usd 2go2 NY 2C my bro, his GF & 3 kds FTF.”
The Scottish teacher who received it in class had no idea what the girl who wrote it meant. The essay was written in a form of English used in cell phone text messages(短信). Text messages (also called SMS) through cell phones became very popular in the late 1990s. At first, mobile phone companies thought that text messaging would be a good way to send messages to customers, but customers quickly began to use the text messaging service to send messages to each other. Teenagers in particular enjoyed using text messaging, and they began to create a new language for messages called “texting.”
A text message is limited to 160 characters, including letters, spaces, and numbers, so messages must be kept short. In addition, typing on the small keypad of a cell phone is difficult, so it's common to make words shorter. In texting, a single letter or number can represent(代表) a word, like “r” for “are,” “u” for “you,” and “2” for “to.” Several letters can also represent a phrase, like “lol” for “laughing out loud.” Another characteristic(特征) of texting is the leaving out of letters in a word, like spelling “please” as “pls.”
Some parents and teachers worry that texting will make children bad spellers and bad writers. The student who wrote the essay at the top of this page said writing that way was more comfortable for her. (The essay said, “My summer holidays were a complete waste of time. Before, we used to go to New York to see my brother, his girlfriend, and their three kids face to face.”)
Not everyone agrees that texting is a bad thing. Some experts say languages always develop, and this is just another way in which English is changing. Other people believe texting will disappear soon. New technology for voice messages may soon make text messages a thing of the past.
1. What is the writer's opinion of text messaging?
A. The writer does not give his opinions.
B. It is not bad for children.
C. It will make children bad writers.
D. It is fun and easy to do.
2. Which characteristic of texting is NOT described in the passage?
A. Using letters to represent words.
B. Using phrases to represent essays.
C. Using letters to represent phrases.
D. Using numbers to represent words.
3. Which of the following was most probably the title of the student's essay?
A. My Smmr Hols B. CU in LA C. My GF D. My Gr8 Tchr
4. Why do some people think that texting is bad?
A. It costs too much. B. It's too difficult to type.
C. Teenagers won't learn to write correctly. D. It's not comfortable.
5. Why aren't some people worried about the effect of texting?
A. Not many people use texting.
B. Spelling in English is too difficult.
C. Teenagers quickly become bored with texting.
D. Texting will disappear because of new technology.

Make the most of college
Dear Daughter,
As we drove off from Columbia, I wanted to write a letter to you to tell you all that is on my mind.
First, I want to tell you how proud we are. Getting into Columbia is a real testament of what a great well-rounded student you are. You should be as proud of yourself as we are.
Your college years will be the most important of your life. It is in college that you will discover what learning is about. This will be the period where you go from teacher-taught to master-inspired, after which you must become self-learner. So do take each subject seriously, and even if what you learn isn’t critical for your life, the learning skills you acquire will be something you will cherish forever.
Follow your passion in college. Take courses you think you will enjoy. Don’t be trapped by what others think or say, but make up your own mind.
Most importantly, make friends and be happy. College friends are often the best in life. Pick a few friends and become really close to them – pick the ones who are genuine to you. Don’t worry about their hobbies, grades, looks or even personalities.
Start planning early – what would you like to do? Where would you like to live? What would you like to learn? I think your plan to study fashion is good, and you should decide where you want to be, and get onto the right courses.
Whether it is summer-planning, or coursework planning, or picking a major, or managing your time, you should take control of your life. I will always be there for you, but the time has come for you to be in the driver’s seat – this is your life, and you need to be in control. Being in control feels great. Try it, and you’ll love it!
College is the four years where you have:
The greatest amount of free time
the first chance to be independent
the most flexibility(灵活性) to change
the lowest risk for making mistakes
So please treasure your college years – make the best of your free time, become an independent thinker in control of your destiny, be bold to experiment, learn and grow through your successes and challenges.

Dear Abby,
This is my first letter to you, although I have been reading your column for many years. I need an outside opinion.
I am a grandmother in my 70s and have just returned from visiting my daughter, her husband and their three dearly loved children--all under the age of 5--and I'm upset with some of their parenting ways.
For example: They lock the doors to their children's bedrooms at night because the children might get out of their beds and wander around the house, and we may not hear them."
If one child should get punishment, all three are punished, and if one child says a naughty
word, all three are given hot sauce (辣酱汁) in the mouth. I know these parents love their children very much, but are these ways of disciplining them wise? Please understand, it is not my aim to interfere (干涉).
--- Gram
Dear Gram,
Children's bedroom doors should not be locked. Should a flash fire break out, it would be a nightmare (噩梦).Punishing all the children when only one has earned the punishment is a good way to make them grow up to hate each other. Children who use "naughty" words should not be punished with hot sauce in the mouth-they should be taught the proper and acceptable word to use instead of the "naughty" word.
1.Gram's daughter _____________.
A. is very strict with her children B. does not love her three children
C. always punishes her children at night D. often gives her children hot sauce
2. Gram writes the letter in order to ____________.
A. disclose her daughter's ways as a mother
B. criticize her daughter's ways as a mother
C. express her anger about her daughter s ways as a mom
D. get others' opinion about her daughter's ways as a mom
3. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Gram seems to care for her grand children very much.
B. Gram is against some of her daughter's ways as a mom.
C. Abby is for only one of Gram's daughter's ways as a mom.
D. Abby agrees with Gram about her daughter's ways as a mom.
