It’s become part of the restaurant table setting: knife, fork, napkin and cell phone.
Distracted (思想不集中的) dining is the new concern with customers constantly texting friends, uploading a Weibo photo of the meal they’re about to chew down or emailing the boss. For many smart-phone users, it’s hard just to focus on the meal and company at hand.
Now, one restaurant in Los Angeles is giving diners a reason to turn off the digital world, by offering customers willing to check (寄存) their phones at the door a 5-percent discount on their bill. Owner and chef Mark Gold of Eva Restaurant, located on Beverly Boulevard near N. Gardner Street, hopes this gives customers a way to truly sit back and relax, enjoy their meal and actually talk with friends and family in person.
“For us, it’s really not about people disturbing other guests. Eva is home, and we want to create that environment of home, and we want people to connect again,” he explained. “It’s about two people sitting together and just connecting, without the distraction of a phone, and we’re trying to create an atmosphere where you come in and really enjoy the experience and the food and the company.”
Gold said applying the suggestion reminds him to avoid cell phone usage, too. “I’m guilty of it as well. When my wife and I go to dinner it seems like the cell phone is part of the table setting now. Every table you look at, it’s a wine glass, the silverware and the cell phone,” he joked.
The husband and wife team runs Eva, a 40-person space with European flair. Gold said a little less than half take advantage of the deal, and no one has gotten upset about it.

Since the early 1980s, sponsorship (赞助)has become a major part of sport. But how effective is it?
There were some big changes to football shirts in the early 1980s. Instead of shirts telling you the name of the team, they gave you the name of a company. At times, it wasn't clear if the team playing was Manchester United or Sharp Electronics. However, fans soon got used to the new look shirts until they changed again: first to Vodafone, then to American Insurance Company AIG, and then to American re-insurance company Aon. It's hard to keep track sometimes.
So, why has sports sponsorship become so popular? Both sides see clear advantages. Most large companies are keen to link their brand to a well-known sporting personality because they believe raising their image in this way will increase sales. And the large sums they offer to do so is a big incentive (激励)for the other side. There's a lot of money involved in sports sponsorship, and many predict that the sums will be rising over the coming years.
But problems can arise. For example, what happens if they sponsor an unsuccessful player or team? Will they look stupid at the end of the season if their team has lost? And what happens if they sponsor a team or player who gets into trouble? DeutscheTelekom was one of the major sponsors of the famous cyclist Lance Armstrong but found it in an awkward situation when he failed drugs tests. As a result of this scandal(丑闻),many companies have moved away from sponsoring cyclists. Instead many now choose to sponsor events rather than the people. Of course, it doesn't matter which team wins because the audiences will see lots of company ads and logos everywhere and the companies know that they will win.
But the really important question is, does sponsorship work? Will you buy their products after the game just because you've seen their ads and logos? There's clearly more research to be done.
1.What's one of the effects of sports sponsorship on the football fans?
A.They can buy cheaper football shirts.
B.They recognize the teams more easily.
C.They welcome the changes of sponsorship.
D.They are confused about the names on the shirts.
2.According to the passage, we can know that .
A.Sponsorship is often a win-win situation.
B.Many sports teams actually dislike sponsorship.
C.The money on sports sponsorship will decrease.
D.Sports sponsorship certainly promotes a company's sales.
3.Why do many companies sponsor events instead of players now?
A.To better spread their brands.
B.To cut the cost of sponsorship.
C.To attract more people's attention.
D.To avoid unexpected troubles of the players .

Count Me Out
Call me old-fashioned. Call me old. Call me what you want, but I refuse to become part of this new Internet world.
I do not possess a computer at home or at the office. Actually, I stopped going to an office 35 years ago, when all communications were done with a pen, a typewriter, or, if the matter was of world-shaking importance, over the telephone. Likewise, if you like something advertised in a newspaper or magazine, you visited the shop selling it at the given address, or you phoned the number shown. Then you spoke to the fellow and asked for further details.
Tell me what you think of the following ad that appeared the other day in the newspaper. It was for a cure for cancer and this is what it said: “Awareness is the key. Visit spfulford. com at the awareness site.” There was no address or telephone number for the site. So what do unfortunate people without a computer do if they are seeking a cure for their illness?
There are, I am told, certain advantages in having access to the Internet. You can, for example, send love messages across the world or even get married to someone that you meet online. This bit doesn’t interest me; I have been happily married for 60 years. There are, of course, other activities for Internet users besides finding love. They can pay bills, order groceries, or discuss with their doctors.
And this is by no means all. More amazing things are yet to come in the near future. I read a newspaper report recently that quoted Stephen Hawking, an important British scientist. “The complexity of a computer as it exists today is probably less than the brain of an earthworm,” he said. “But, as technology advances, computers will become more complex, and a time may come when the Internet may develop ‘consciousness.’ In other words, the Internet will be able to think, have feelings, and may well be able to act on its own.”
If Professor Hawking is right, I may change my attitude to computers. As I grow older each day, I would like one of those that not only thinks for me but also accepts responsibilities for all my mistakes.

A.Get me out of the Internet world. |

A.Taking blames. | B.Curing illnesses. |
