Every March, the country celebrates the achievements of women in American history. Even though these achievements go back a long way, most schools didn’t start focusing on women pioneers and their achievements until recently. Today, most schools teach kids about the many contributions women have made to our country. How did this change come about?
On March 19, 1911, a German woman named Clara Zetkin organized the very first International Women’s Day. Inspired by American working women, the event took on the causes of peace in an effort to end World War I as well as women’s rights. However, people’s interest in International Women’s Day still dwindled over the years. It gained momentum (势头) again in the 1960’s when the women’s movement caused women to wonder why they weren’t included in the history books.
By the 1970s, more female historians began to look back at women’s contributions in history. In 1978, a California school district started Women’s History Week to promote the teaching of women’s history. School officials picked the week of March 8 to include International Women’s Day. It was so popular that, in 1981, Congress passed a resolution, making the week a celebration for the entire country. The concept of studying women’s history continued to grow in popularity. In 1987, a group of women asked Congress to expand the celebration. That same year, Congress declared the entire month of March National Women’s History Month.
Today, schools and communities across the country celebrate the month with special lessons and activities designed to teach the ways women have helped shape the US. The women who have worked hard to make Women’s History Month a reality would like to see women’s history studied all year, not just every March. In 1996, the National Women’s History Museum was founded. It is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and celebrating the various historic contributions of women. The organization is working with Congress to open a permanent (永久的) museum site in Washington, D.C.

On March 17 the color green will spread all around the world in celebration of St Patrick's Day. The Irish (爱尔兰人)traditionally wear something green on this day, as the color is associated with Ireland. 1.
Usually these jokes will be about Irish stupidity, their famous thirst for alcohol, or their fame for telling tall (untrue) tales. These characteristics are all based on the most common Irish stereotypes (成见):that the Irish are hot-tempered drinkers who love to fight and will do anything to avoid a day's work.
2. These stereotypes may have rung true back in the 19th century when they started, but they're far from true today, with the exception, perhaps, of the drinking.
Today, the Irish are admired for their storytelling ability, musical talent and strong education. 3. Or that many of the most famous music acts of all time, such as singer Enya and rock band U2, were Irish bom and bred. And in December, Ireland's education system was ranked 11th in the world in a new global top 50 ranking, website independent.ie reported.
4. They can date back to the 19th century, which was a very bad time to be Irish. At that time, Ireland was poverty-stricken and starving. Many Irish moved to the US to escape famine, but there they had to compete ——occasionally with their fists ——for jobs and housing with other immigrant groups. It was on the US,streets that the Irish earned their reputation for street fighting.
5. Drinking in Ireland is a predilection (偏好),but it's not necessarily something to criticize. It was the Irish after all who created one of the world's best-loved beers Guinness.
A. The real joke, however, is that these negative Irish stereotypes still exist.
B. Today, few Irish are interested in this tradition.
C. Ifs no accident that several of the greatest writers of the 20th century were Irish
D. Another St Patrick's Day tradition is for the non-Irish to make jokes about the Irish.
E. Why do Irish people love to drink so much?
F. So where did the negative Irish stereotypes come from?.
G. However, one bit of the Irish stereotype is still true, their love of drink.

ON March 17 there will be an explosion of green across the World in celebration of St Patrick’s Day.The Irish traditionally wear green on this day, as the color is associated with Ireland.
But there are others, non-Irish,who use the occasion to make jokes about the Irish. They use the stereotype(成见)of the Irish as hot-tempered(脾气暴躁的)drinkers,who love to fight and will do anything to avoid a day's work.
However, today the Irish are more often admired for their musical talent and many other abilities. It’s no accident that many of today's most popular music groups, such as singer Enya and rock band U2,are Irish born and bred.Lonely Planet readers even ranked Ireland in 2007 as the friendliest country in the world.
So where did the negative Irish stereotype come from? From the 19th century when it was a bad time to be Irish.
Ireland then was poverty-stricken and starving. Many Irish moved to the United States to escape famine, but there they had to compete---occasionally with their fists for jobs and housing with other immigrant groups, such as the Italians. It was on the US’ streets that the Irish earned their reputation for street fighting.
The stereotype of the Irish as big drinkers may be unfair, but Ireland can boast(为……自豪) its fair share of famous drinks. It was the Irish after all who created one of the world’s best-loved beers,Guinness.
65.What is the story mainly about?
A.How the Irish earned their reputation.
B.The festival-St Patrick’s Day.
C.Jokes about the Irish people.
D.Famous Irish stereotype and the truth.
66.Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
A.St Palrick’s Day is celebrated nowhere else but Ireland.
B.Modern Irish show no interest in drinking alcohol.
C.Part of the stereotype about the Irish is that they are lazy.

67.Where did the negative Irish stereotype come from?
A.From their everyday behavior toward other people.
B.From the behavior of Irish immigrants to America in the 19th century.
C.From the historical record of 19th century Ireland.
D.From most people’s impression of Irish people

On March 17, people around the world celebrate the Irish holiday of Saint Patrick’s Day. It is a major holiday in Ireland, but the rest of the world has influenced its celebration as much as the Irish themselves.
Most Americans think of Saint Patrick’s Day as a big party centered around drinking alcohol. But its beginnings in Ireland were religious, says Mike Cronin, a professor of Irish history with Boston College of Massachusetts.
Ireland is a mostly Roman Catholic country. Saint Patrick lived in Ireland more than 2,000 years ago. He is widely considered to have established Christianity in the country. The Church honored him with a holy day in the 17th century. March 17 marks the date of his death. The average Irish person honored March 17 quietly. Attending church services was the main activity. In fact, most businesses that served alcohol would close in honor of the day.
In the early 1900s, Ireland’s government made St. Patrick’s Day an official holiday. By the 1960s, towns across Ireland started celebrating the holiday with parades and music. In Ireland today, St. Patrick’s Day is a four-day public celebration that includes parades, music, food, and games.
For Irish people living outside Ireland, Saint Patrick’s Day became a chance to celebrate their Irish identity and culture. Now, countries and cities around the world celebrate March 17 in creative ways. Many countries hold Saint Patrick’s Day parades. Famous monuments, including the Great Wall of China, the Niagara Falls, and the Gateway of India in Mumbai will all be colored by green light for the day.
Cronin says that the worldwide popularity of Saint Patrick’s Day has helped the Irish government, which uses the holiday as a form of diplomacy. And for a small island of 4.5 to 5 million people it’s quite remarkable that they have that kind of soft power.
1.How did average Irish people celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day in the 17th century?
A. Drinking alcohol. B. Parading in the streets.
C. Attending church services peacefully. D. Coloring well-known monuments green.
2.What can we learn from the passage?

B. Saint Patrick’s Day plays a role in foreign affairs in Ireland today.
C. Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated worldwide today as in the 17th century.
D. On Saint Patrick’s Day, parades and parties are held throughout America.

March 21 has been declared World Sleep Day,a time to recognize and celebrate the value of sleep. Many sleep experts hope it will be a wake-up call.
According to a 2016 poll(民意调查)by the National Sleep Foundation, nearly 4 in 5 Americans don't get as much sleep as they should during the workweek. On average, adults are thought to need at least eight hours of sleep a night, although some can manage with less and some won't do well without more. But the survey found that,on workdays, only 21% of Americans actually get a full eight hours of sleep, and another 21% get less than six.
To many of us,the thought of spending more time sleeping is,well,a big yawn.On the other hand, the thought of being smarter, thinner, healthier and more cheerful has a certain appeal. And those are just a few of the advantages that can be ours if we consistently get enough sleep, researchers say. Also on the plus side: We're likely to have better skin, better memories, better judgment, and,oh,yes, longer lives.
"When you lose even one hour of sleep for any reason,it influences your performance the next day," says Dr.Alon Avidan, director of the UCLA Sleep Disorders Center.
A study published last year found the same to be true even of children. When kids aged 8 to 12 slept for just one hour less for four nights, they didn't function as well during the day.
But sleeping has an image problem."We see napping or sleeping as lazy," says Jennifer Vriend,a clinical psychologist in Ottawa,Canada, and the leading author of the study with children."We put so much emphasis on diet, nutrition and exercise.Sleep is in the back seat." In fact, she adds,no matter how much we work out,no matter how well we eat,we can't be in top physical shape unless we also get plenty of sleep.
1.The underlined part in Paragraph 1 means ______ .
A. To wake up the sleepers B. To draw people's attention
C. To serve as a morning call D. To declare the special day
2.From Paragraph 3 we can infer that ______ .
A. The thought of being healthier is not very attractive
B. Sleeping has nothing to do with one's expectations
C. Enough sleep is the guarantee of the appealing things
D. Spending more time on sleeping is a waste of time
3.What Jennifer Vriend said in the last paragraph implies that ______ .
A. People care little about sleeping B. Sleeping is not important
C. Lazy people tend to sleep long D. Sleeping is only part of our life
4.What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To talk about people's sleeping problems.
B. To provide an investigation result of sleeping.
C. To stress the function of sleeping at night.
D. To raise the awareness of enough sleeping.

●2.Having a copy of your goal makes it real. You can write you goal in a journal you’ll be keeping all year, or you can write it on a poster and stick it on your desk so that you can look at it each day. Every time you remind yourself of your goal, you’re training your brain to accept the effort needed to make the goal happen.
●Try various methods. One may not work while another may be just right for you. 3.Some people learn best through writing, some through listening and reading, and some through talking it through. Once you realize which way works for you, you can work better and achieve your goal easily.
●Think positive. 4.Negative thoughts are unhelpful and they became roadblocks. Stop telling yourself you can’t and start telling yourself you can, and talk about you are doing rather than hoping you can do something. Always believe that you’re capable, even if you have difficulty along the way.
