If you took the strengths of others and compared them to your weaknesses, would this make you feel good? The funny thing is that this is what most of us do at one time or another—and some of us do it pretty often. It's a sure-fire recipe for a drop in self-confidence and for unhappiness. So how can we stop comparing ourselves with others? Here are some tips I've found useful.
Awareness.
Most often we do these social comparisons without realizing we're doing it. It's a natural act, I suppose. So the solution is to become aware. If you focus on these thoughts for a few days, it will become much easier with practice, and soon it'll be hard not to notice.
Stop yourself.
Once you realize you're making these comparisons, stop yourself. Don't feel bad—just admit the thought, and gently change the focus.
Count your blessings.
Focus on what you do have, and on what you are already blessed with. Count what you have, not what you don't have. Think about how lucky you are to have what you have, to have the people in your life who care about you. If you always want what others have, you will never have enough. You will always want more. That's an endless cycle, and it will never lead to happiness. Instead, learn to realize that what you have is already enough.
Focus on your strengths.
Instead of looking at your weaknesses, ask yourself what your strengths are. Be proud of them. Work on using them to your best advantage.
No one is perfect—we all know that. But we seem to feel bad when we don't reach perfection. You aren't perfect and you never will be. Keep trying to improve, but don't think you'll ever be the "perfect person". If you realize that imperfection is what makes you who you are, you are already perfect.

If you use earphones for too long a time, your ears might feel painful. You could also lose your hearing for the rest of your life. So don’t wear your earphones too long. Use them less than one hour a day. Want sharp hearing? Don’t forget to do the following: Try to stay away from places where there is too much noise, like a disco. If you have to go, wear earplugs. When swimming, remember to put earplugs into your ears to stop water from getting in. Never put anything sharp into your ears. If you’ve ever compared a woman’s button-up shirt to a man’s, you’ve probably noticed that the buttons are on the opposite sides. This would make sense if all women were left-handed and all men were right-handed, but because the majority of all people are right-handed, that’s clearly not the reason. So what gives?
An age-old theory is that it all has to do with the well-known fact that women can’t dress themselves. I’m kidding. of course (I dress myself nearly every day!), but many years ago, it was a lot harder for females to get dressed. As Live Science puts it: “Depending on the era, men might wear waistcoats and wool jackets. But women’s clothing was far more elaborate, and could consist of a dozen or more garments. Thus, especially in middle and upper-class society, men generally dressed themselves, whereas women did not. Instead, maids and servants might spend an hour or more dressing the lady of the house.” So, it’s long been thought that women’s buttons were placed on the opposite side to cater to the servants dressing them.
But as Elle recently pointed out, buttons on women’s shirts weren’t introduced until 1860—hundreds of years after servants were first used in the dressing room.
Or, according to Cosmopolitan UK, maybe babies are the reason. Women usually hold a child on their left side to free up a dominant hand and a shirt that opens on the right makes breastfeeding easier.
Or, there’s another reasonable but depressing theory.
In Man and Woman: A Study of Secondary and Tertiary Sexual Characters, 1894, Havelock Ellis writes that women’s clothes were designed so that the women had to button themselves with the “inferior (下等的)” left hand as an indicator of their social position as not on the same level as men.
Sigh. We prefer the breastfeeding explanation.
1.From Para. 1 we can learn that ________.
A.the buttons on women’s shirts are on the left
B.the buttons on men’s shirts are on the left
C.That all women are left-handed would make sense
D.That the majority of opeple are right-handed makes no sense
2.By adding what Elle pointed out, the author wants to ________.
A.prove that the buttoning way was originally to cater to the servants
B.show that the reason mentioned above is doubtful
C.introduce a new reason to account for the present buttoning way
D.convince the readers that servants were used much later
3.Why did the author find the reason pointed out by Havelock Ellis depressing?
A.It made no sense at all. B.It suggested discrimination against women.
C.It seemed painful that women used left hands. D.It forced women to button themselves.
4.Which explanation for women’s buttoning shirts does author favor?
A.Women cannot dress themselves.
B.It makes breastfeeding babies easier.
C.It caters to the servants dressing them.
D.It indicates women’s social position isn’t on the same level as men.

Ever wondered why some businesses fail and others seem to go from strength to strength(越来越兴旺发达)? One of the major reasons for success or failure in any business is the choice of location. He was unsure of the best place in this region and came to the ABS for help. A suburban retailer(零售商)in Perth owned a shoe store which stocked a wide range of shoes for men, women and children. There had been an increase in the number of similar shoe stores in the suburban shopping center and the owner wanted to assess the possibility of switching to selling imported shoes and handbags for women only. In order to ensure whether there was a market for these products, the retailer needed to obtain details of income by age, sex, and occupation for all the women in the city of Perth. Using information from the 1996 Census(普查)of Population and Housing, the ABS was able to provide this type of information in a detailed report. With the information, the retailer was able to believe that there were enough professional working women in the area with middle to high incomes, which makes his business possible.
