I’v worked part time since taking early retirement ten years ago. I was inspired by an older friend. We worked for the same company, and he retired two years before I was also considered “spare”, as some companies call it.
Soon after I left work, we had lunch together. First, he assured me that there was life after work. Then he related his own experience. He didn’t want to take another full-time job, so he turned his daughter’s old bedroom into a home office. He arranged for some consulting work from our old company, and he picked up more projects from other contacts. Soon he was working 20 to 30 hours a week. He wasn’t making as much money. His kids were grown-up, so he didn’t need as much income. “As soon as I left that job,” he told me, “my back problems went away. I started to eat better and get more exercise, I make half as much money, but I feel twice as good, and I’m twice as happy.”
I decided to follow a similar track. At the time, my younger child almost finished college, so my parental responsibilities were winding down. We sold our old house and moved into a townhouse. I went to work for myself. And the result? Today I, too, make less money. But we make ends meet. And I feel twice as good and twice as happy.
Our experience isn’t for everybody. But a lot of people have retired early and lived to tell the tale, which proves it possible. Jack, another friend, was a salesman for a communication firm. He had a long distance to work and did a lot of traveling. He decided to leave the corporate world, in part because he had health problems and he wanted to spend more time with his family. Later, he quit his job with flexible hours and was restored to his health. And now he has found a part-time job, and he, together with his family, is leading a more relaxing life.
1.How did the author and his friends feel about their retired life?
A. It’s busy but wealthy. B. It’s flexible but tiring.
C. It’s healthy and happy D. It’s relaxing and wasteful.
2.What did the writer’s friend try to tell him at lunch that day?
A. He regretted not leaving his job earlier. B. He lived a much better life after retiring
C. He made more money after finding a new job. D. His life was not easy for him after losing his job.
3.Before Jack left his last job, he ______.
A. lived a busy life B. used to find part-time jobs
C. often traveled with his family D. worked hard as a real travel agent
4.What does the author mainly confirm by writing the text?
A. Health is more important than work
B. Young people generally live an exhausting life.
C. More retired people are paying attention to health.
D. It may be a good choice for people who retire early to do a part-time job.

A ROBOT companion for older people aims to promote activity and deal with loneliness by urging them to take part in digital and physical activities.
The ElliQ robot, made by Israel-based start-up Intuition Robotics, will be published at the Design Museum in London this week. ElliQ is a small desktop device that consists of a domed (拱形的) “body” and a separate detachable (可拆卸的) screen.
Created in collaboration with Swiss designer Yves Behar, the robot is able to encourage a degree of social engagement. Similar to home assistants like the Amazon Echo, people can simply talk to it, and there are visual clues that could be particularly helpful for those with hearing difficulties.
A key purpose of ElliQ is to act as an easy platform to access existing services such as social media, and messaging programs. For example, the device could alert the users that their grandchild has posted a new photo on Facebook, show it to them on the screen.
ElliQ can recommend activities voluntarily. It might ask if you’re interested in watching a video, for instance, or suggest a walk. It can also act as reminder to take medication.
Having a robot constantly offer suggestions could obviously get annoying, so the device uses machine learning to tailor these suggestions to individual preferences. If a suggestion is met with a positive response once, ElliQ might try it again. If not, it might change for a different tack.
1.Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. A robot companion for older people will strongly advise them to participate in digital and physical activities to be healthy.
B. The ElliQ robot is published at the Design Museum in London.
C. The screen of the ElliQ robot can be removed if necessary.

Most female fashion models start their careers(事业)in their late teens and retire in their early 30s, but 96-year-old Alice Pang isn’t an ordinary fashion model. She started modelling at 93.
Alice always liked dressing well and looking elegant, but never actually considered a career in modelling. But her granddaughter always thought she had it in her, so when she saw an online ad for senior models of 65, she sent in Alice’ s pictures and she was chosen for a photo shoot. Never one to back away from a challenge, Pang decided to give it a shot and even though she knew nothing about modelling, she had all the natural qualities to succeed in it. Today, she is recognized as one of the best senior models in Asia, as well as the oldest.
Born in 1923, Alice never dreamed she’ d one day be modelling for high-end fashion brands like Gucci, Ellery or Valentino, let alone at age 96. But her wonderful skin color and excellent posture(姿势)—uncommon qualities for people of her age—make her one of the most sought-after senior models in the business.
Surprisingly, Alice doesn’t credit exercise or a strict diet for her enviable figure and posture. Even though she agrees that exercise helps some people stay in good shape, she doesn’t even have a morning exercise routine, crediting her good genes(基因)instead. She says her skin is white because she’ s seldom exposed to the sun and she has a straight back.
While most people praise her for her active lifestyle and the courage to start a whole new career in her nineties, some say she should dress and act according to her age. She chooses to ignore them, though, saying that her personal happiness is all that counts.
1.What makes Alice Pang a special fashion model?
A.Her unusually long modelling career.
B.Her being famous worldwide at an old age.
C.Her not retiring from modelling in her early 30s.
D.Her starting the career decades later than normal.
2.According to the text, Alice is a person who ________.
A.doesn’t give up easily
B.is quite fond of competing with others
C.doesn’t do anything she is unfamiliar with
D.often dreams of being a professional model
3.In Alice’ s opinion, her good shape is ________.
A.completely natural B.quite unexpected
C.due to her strict diet D.the result of regular exercise
4.What can be inferred about Alice from the last paragraph?
A.Active as she is, she is rather stubborn.
B.She always turns a deaf ear to others’ opinions.
C.There are different voices on her present lifestyle.
D.She thinks personal happiness comes before modelling.
