It has become a daily routine(常规) for the students on bus No.7 in Arlington, Washington to wave to the “grandma in window”.
Every day for the past five years, you could find the old lady Louise Edlen sitting at her dining room table having breakfast as the kids were passing by. But one day in early October this year she was not found sitting in her usual place.
The kids didn’t see their old friend for a few days. They got worried. Finally, they learned that she had suffered a stroke(中风). “It was kind of heartbreaking to us because she was always there in the past five years,” seventh-grader Axtin Bandewerfhorst said.
But she was upset and was obviously still thinking about the 20 boys and girls who passed by her home every day. The day after the bus driver Carol Mitzelfeld brought a bouquet of flowers from the students to Edlen, the kids looked out of the window to find a sign reading “Thank you”.
“That really made me happy,” 10th-grader Cheyanne Holt said. “It shows how much we mean to her.”
So to welcome Edlen home from the hospital, they made her a sign of their own: a photo of the kids waving from inside the bus.
“Carol told us that a lot of times she even does not remember her daughter’s name, but she always remembers to wave to the kids on the bus,” Bandewerfhorst said. “That made me feel really special.”
Louise’s husband, Dave Elden, said, “The students’ daily move gives her something to look forward to every day.”
Elden has returned home, and is back to waving to the students every day.
1.When does the No. 7 bus pass Louise’s house?
A.In the morning. B.At noon.
C.In the evening. D.At night.
2.Where was the sign reading “Thank You” placed ?
A.In front of the hospital. B.On the school bus.
C.At the gate of the kids’ school. D.In front of the dining room window.
3.Louise felt upset in hospital because ___________.
A.she forgot her daughter’s name B.the kids didn’t visit her
C.she couldn’t see those kids as usual D.her illness made her suffer quite a lot

Kenya’s long-distance runners are among the best in the world. Is their food and daily routine (常规) a key to the secret of their success? We spent a week at a training camp with ten top athletes (运动员) to find out. This is what we discovered.
They eat five times a day:
08:00 Breakfast
10:00 Mid-morning snack
13:00 Lunch
16:00 Afternoon snack
19:00 Supper
The Kenyan runners’ food is based on bread, rice, potatoes, porridge, cabbage, beans and ugali (balls of cornmeal). Ugali is usually eaten with vegetables.
Meat is eaten in fairly small amounts, just four times a week. The athletes drink a lot of tea with milk and sugar. They get all the vitamins (维生素) they need from their food — they never take vitamin pills.
They usually train as a group twice a day. The first run is at 6 o’clock in the morning and the afternoon run is at 5 o’clock. They run 10 to 15 kilometres in the morning and 6 to 8 kilometres in the afternoon. Once a week, the two 1,500-metre runners in the group run shorter distances at higher speeds.
An amazing part of the Kenyan food is its richness in carbohydrates (碳水化合物). Every 24 hours, they have about 600 grams of carbohydrates to give them energy for their training. They only eat a little fat, most of it coming from the milk they have in their tea. They drink about a litre (升) of water every day. Surprisingly, they drink more than a litre of tea every day, too. They always eat soon after training.
Rest and sleep are also an important part of the athletes’ programme. They are always in bed early and they always get a good night’s sleep.
1.Why did the author go to the training camp?
A.To improve his running. B.To report who are the best runners.
C.To learn from the athletes’ good habits. D.To find out why the athletes do so well.
2.What do we know about the first group run of the day?
A.It starts at midmorning. B.It happens before breakfast.
C.It is shorter than the second run. D.It is led by two 1,500-metre runners.
3.What surprised the author about the athletes?
A.They drink a lot of tea. B.They eat five times a day.
C.They never take vitamin pills. D.They take in a lot of milk and sugar.

Technology has become so advanced that the previously impossible seems to occur on a daily basis. And yet — we still have no cure for the common cold.
According to Peter Barlow, a scientist at Edinburgh Napier University in the UK, the main challenge lies in the many different types of cold viruses. There are at least 160 types. They changed so easily that they quickly become resistant to drugs, or learn to hide from our immune systems. In other words, a single cure isn’t likely to work on every type of cold.
However, researchers from Stanford University have found a possible answer. They discovered a protein that the viruses need. Without it, they can’t spread inside your body. To identify the gene(基因) which produces the specific protein needed by the viruses, researchers used a gene-editing technique to test all genes. These modified (改变的) cells were then exposed to a range of viruses, including ones causing the common cold. All the viruses were unable to replicate (复制) inside cells without a gene that produces that specific protein.
Then, they tested genetically modified mice, which were completely unable to produce the protein. The mice were able to live normal lives without the protein. “Lacking that gene protected the mice completely from viral infection,” associate professor Jan Carette, from Stanford, told the BBC. “These mice would always die, but they lived through and we saw a very strong reduction in copying viruses and very strong protection. We have identified a fantastic target that all cold viruses require and depend on. Take that away and the virus really has no chance. ”
Carette said the plan is to find a drug which can temporarily control the protein, instead of producing genetically modified humans.
1.Which of the following can best describe common cold viruses?
A.Severe and deadly. B.Mysterious and stubborn.
C.Diverse and changeable. D.Challenging and oversized.
2.How does the protein work?
A.Help viruses spread. B.Reduce physical infection.
C.Fight against other viruses. D.Strengthen the immune system.
3.What can we learn about the genetically modified mice?
A.They caught cold easily. B.Their health worsened.
C.They produced more protein. D.They were able to survive,
4.What is purpose of the research?
A.To control certain genes. B.To conquer the common cold.
C.To test a new drug. D.To cure genetically modified mice.

Searching for love is no longer just a favorite subject for songs. It has also become a huge industry. Researchers say the online dating industry in the US earned 649 million dollars in 2006. They expect this number to increase to more than 9 million dollars by 2011.
Experts say that the industry has grown because traditional social ties have weakened. Many young people leave behind a close community of friends and family to find work in bigger cities. People work longer hours, so they have less time to meet new people.
This helps explain the popularity of online dating. Some estimates say120 thousand marriages a year result from matches made on the Internet.
The dating industry has also been expanding in new ways. Many companies offer personalized services for finding the perfect mate. These companies are answering a large demand by single people. They are willing to invest their time and money to find love with carefully planned methods, instead of leaving love to chance.
AskRomeo is a company in Virginia. It provides single people with advice on how to meet a person for the first time.
Also in Virginia, the company True Life Partners provides a more costly and detailed dating service. The company hires a team of professional persons who help couples meet. But this level of service comes at a high price. Men pay thousands of dollars for the service. But women get to take part at no cost.
There are lots of other costs linked to dating. And we wonder how the economic recession(衰退) has affected dating in the US.

A.Songs were only written to express love in the past. |
