Nowadays, we depend on advanced technology too much. However, a the saying goes, a coin has two sides. The tool bringing you convenience may also put you in trouble. Here is a modern-day horror story:
A young mother was employed in doing her writing when her son, aged 2, burst into tears somehow. She did all she could to ease her son. But in vain. She had no way to comfort him. Meanwhile, her iPhone rang aloud, which attracted his son's attention. He stopped crying temporarily. It occurred to her that the iPhone might help. Thus, she handed her iPhone to her son: What happened next? The child entered an incorrect passcode on his mother's phone so many times that the device became locked for 251 14984 minutes, about 47 years, making it absolutely useless to its formerly digitally connected owner. That's the scene now facing a Shanghai mother, identified only as Ms Lu by Chinese news reports, whose kid played with her phone and unfortunately began the process of disabling the device for, basically, forever. According to a news report, Ms Lu waited two months to see if the situation would improve, but the iPhone remained locked. “I couldn't really wait 47 years and tell my grandchild it was his father's mistake, ”she reportedly said. The alternative mode of accessing the phone is to wipe it with a factory reset. This is why you should always backup ( 备份) all your data.
iPhone can become locked with six failed attempts at entering a passcode on the locked screen, and the amount of time for which the phone is locked can compound (增加) with ongoing attempts to break in. So, for all the parents out there: see to it that you don't let your kid loose on your phone, assuming you want to still use it when he's done, of course.
1.Why did the young mother hand her phone to her son?
A.To focus on her housework. B.To comfort her crying kid.
C.To let him answer the phone. D.To play the phone with him.
2.What happened to Ms Lu?
A.The system of her iPhone broke down.
B.She couldn't use her iPhone back then.
C.Her iPhone was locked for two months.
D.She forgot the passcode of her iPhone.
3.To solve her problem, Ms Lu should____
A.backup all the data immediately
B.wipe the iPhone with a factory reset
C.enter the correct passcode for six, times
D.set a new passcode to unlock the iPhone
4.What does the underlined part in the last paragraph mean?

Is Society Too Dependent On Technology?
Just think, what would happen if your computer, iPad or laptop crashed today? What if someone took away your phone for some days or perhaps you lost it? 1. Today, most people are becoming dependent on technology.
Most of us cannot go for a minute without looking at our phones and the fear of the battery dying is immense. If you happen to work in offices you may be familiar with this trend. 2. Anyway, it’s true. How can work continue if it’s hard to send an email to a colleague or customer? This is common in almost all offices.
Kids used to spend a lot of time with each other or parents playing or just sharing stories. Those evening games after school are over; watching cartoons on a Sunday or playing with friends are no longer there. 3. Technology has taken all their time.
Society may have gone too far in technology dependence. It has become so immense that doctors have recommended for “technology detox”. 4. If not, according to Oxford Dictionary, Technology Detox is a period during which an individual avoids using any electronic devices including computers, smart phones, etc., as a chance to reduce stress and focus on social interaction in the outside world.
Well, the choice remains in our hands. We must agree that society is being carried away by the increased inventions being introduced in our lives today. 5. Meanwhile, we should have the discipline to turn it off when we are supposed to experience life in reality.
A.Perhaps you may have heard of it.
B.We appreciate technology since it has its benefits.
C.If the Internet is down, all the tasks are over for the day.
D.Technology addiction has become a major problem among teenagers.
E.If thinking about these incidences makes you stressed, you are not alone.
F.Here are some signs that our generation depends too much on technology.
G.Today, most kids remain indoors playing computer games or with a smart phone.

We are more dependent on technology now than ever before-and for good reason. Our cell phones have more capabilities than laptops did 5 years ago. Technology is quickly becoming faster, more reliable, and yes, more portable.
Because of this, now is a great time to look into purchasing a laptop. Laptops now have the same computing power as desktops and are the least expensive they’ve ever been. If you’ re constantly on the go, it makes sense to have one.
We feature a lot of hot tech deals here at MakeUseOf, but if you’re in the market for a laptop, I've collected the top two laptop computers for you. I only looked at laptops priced under $1,000 that had at least 4GB of RAM, a dual-core processor, and came with Windows 7. Let’s see what we camp up with!
1. Sony Vaio FW 560F/T
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo P7450/2. 13GHz
Memory: 6 GB(8GB Max)
Hard Drive: 500GB
This Sony Vaio laptop has a lot of features that make it very attractive. With a 16-inch screen, it is very slim. It has Blu-ray playback and decent gaming performance, although it doesn’t support 1080p. It makes for a very good multimedia notebook.
2. Samsung NP-R580-JSB1US
Processor: Intel Core i5 15-430M/2. 26GHz
Memory: 4 GB
Hard Drive: 500GB
This laptop comes with a Core i5 processor, NVIDIA graphics, and Blu-ray support. I’ve read that the touch-pad is uncomfortable at times, but the processing power and graphics make it a great laptop with decent battery life.
1.What is the normal memory of Sony Vaio FW560F/T?
A. 8G B. 5GB C. 4GB D. 6GB
2.What’s the similarity of Sony Vaio FW560F/T and Samsung NP-R580-JSB1US?

Connecting with people has become so much easier with advancing technology. Tasks that once required a postage stamp or carrier pigeon are now as simple as tapping a name or even a face on your screen, and you’re connected. But also easier is unconsciously getting caught up in a dilemma by violating certain new rules for communicating. A big one for some: Don’t call until you’ve texted to confirm it’s OK to call. But that’s just the beginning.
“I’m usually pretty mild and not much bothers me,” said Mark Angielle, a 29-year-old office manager from White Plains, New York. But the one thing that he hates more than anything else in life is the terrible one-word message — “K.” “At the very least reply with, Got it.” he said “At least give me a few words here. You’re not that busy.”
There are hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of others who have taken Lo social media to express their distaste for people who don’t follow the unwritten rules of digital communication.
“These rules are simply a new display of a phenomenon we’ve seen in the past,” said James Ivory, professor of communication a Virginia Tech. In the same way that generations and small groups of friends have their own slang and customs, internet culture has given birth to technology-dependent beings that have their own unique set of routine.
But not everyone gets the point. Unlike language, digital communication can be filled with ambiguous clues (线索、迹象) that the person on the other end of the call, text or email may or may not easily understand.
“As soon as people aren’t talking face to face, the first thing that gets lost is some of the richness of the body language,” Ivory said, “People immediately fill that gap by using emoji (表情符号) to sum up a feeling in seconds.
“There's great potential for danger,” Ivory warned. “What's considered polite in one form might be inappropriate or rude in another occasion.”
1.What can you infer about Mark from Paragraph 2?
A. He is a businessman with a bad temper.
B. He complains about social manners.
C. He can’t bear one- word messages.
D. He dislike a busy business life.
2.According to the text, which of the following breaks the rules for communicating?
A. John says “I got it.” to his boss face to face.
B. Jim calls Bill without confirming in advance.
C. Mary texts Lily to make sure if she can call her.
D. Jack sends “Thanks a lot” to his business friends.
3.Why may people misunderstand each other during digital communication?
A. Emoji cannot sum up feelings.
B. People use their own slang and customs.
C. There are large quantities of written rules.
D. People gets wrong messages without clear clues.
4.What are people expected to do after reading tie passage?
A. To obey their own digital communication rules.
B. To be aware of rules during digital communication.
C. To use advancing technology even with disadvantages.
D. To keep pace with digital communication development.

A rapidly advancing contemporary science that is highly dependent on new tools is Earth system science. Earth system science involves observation and measurements on the Earth at all scales from the largest to the smallest. The huge amounts of data that are gathered come from many different locations and require special techniques for handling data. Important new tools that facilitate Earth system science include satellite remote sensing, small deep-sea submarines, and geographic information systems.
More than any other way of gathering evidence, satellite observations continually remind us that each part of the Earth interacts with and is dependent on all other parts.
Earth system science was born from the realization of that interdependence. Satellite remote sensing makes possible observations at large scales, and in many cases, measurements of factors that could not otherwise be measured. For example, the ozone hole over Antarctica--the decrease in the concentration of ozone high in the atmosphere--is measured by remote sensing, as are changes in deserts, forests, and farmlands around the world. Such measurements can be used in many areas of specialization besides Earth system science. Archaeology, for example, has benefited from satellite observations that reveal the traces of ancient trade routes across the Arabian Desert.
New tools for exploring previously inaccessible areas of the Earth have also added greatly to our knowledge of the Earth system. Small deep-sea submarines allow scientists to travel to the depths of the ocean. There they have discovered new species and ecosystems thriving near deep-sea vents that emit heat, sasses, and mineral-rich water.
Just as important as new methods of measurement and exploration are new ways to store and analyze data about the Earth system. Computer-based software programs known as geographic information systems, or GIS, allow a large number of data points to be stored along with their locations. These can be used to produce maps and to compare different sets of information gathered at different times. For example, satellite remote sensing images of a forest can be converted to represent stages in the forest's growth. Two such images, made at different times can be overlaid and compared, and the changes that have taken place can be represented in a new image.
1.The word "facilitate" in Paragraph I is closest in meaning to ________.
A. enable B. require C. organize D. examine
2.The author of the passage mentions that satellite observations are especially effective in ________.
A. conducting scientific studies of life on the ocean floor
B. predicting future climate changes
C. providing data to determine Earth's age
D. demonstrating interactions among all of Earth's parts
3.According to the passage, satellite observations of the Arabian Desert allow archaeologists to know ________.
A). indications of ancient routes
B. evidence of former lakes
C. traces of early farms
D. remains of ancient forests
4.What is the main idea of the passage?
A. special techniques are needed to classify the huge amounts of data about Earth.
B. New tools provide information about Earth that was once impossible to obtain.
C. Advances in Earth system science have resolved many environmental problems.
D. Satellite remote sensing can show changes between two images taken years apart.
