At 9 pm, Li Zhigang was sitting in front of his fruit shop on a busy street in central Shanghai’s Xujiahui area, removing the thin plastic film from rotten pears and oranges. “This is so much trouble!” he complained while throwing the plastic into one garbage can and the fruit into another. In the past, Li simply threw away what could not be sold with the packaging on, but from July 1, 2019, he could be fined up to 200 yuan for doing so.
Like Li, many of the tens of millions of residents in Shanghai have been complaining recently that the introduction of compulsory household garbage sorting is making life difficult, but at the same time have been having to learn to do it.
Calls for garbage sorting have brought little progress in China in the past decade, but Shanghai is leading a fresh start for the world’s second-largest waste producer. “If we say China is now classifying its waste, then it’s Shanghai that is really doing it,” said Chen Liwen, an environmentalist who has devoted herself to waste classification for the past decade. “It’s starting late, compared with the US or Japan, but if it’s successful in such a big city with such a huge population, it will mean a lot for the world,” she said. While the measures force a change of habits for most people, they bring opportunities for some. Du Huanzheng, director of the Recycling Economy Institute at Tongji University, said waste sorting was important for China’s recycling industry. “Without proper classification, a lot of garbage that can be recycled is burned, and that’s a pity,” he said. “After being classified, things suitable to be stored and transported can now be recycled.” Besides, prices of small sortable garbage cans for home use have increased on e-commerce (电子商务) platforms, while garbage can makers are also developing smart models in response to new needs. What’s more, garbage sorting is also an important part of a country’s soft power. “For China, it is an opportunity to improve its international reputation. However, it is a long process that requires effort from government, enterprises and individuals (个人),” Du said.
1.What do the underlined words “doing so” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A.Packaging fruit with plastic film.
B.Selling rotten fruit to customers.
C.Throwing rotten fruit into a garbage can.
D.Throwing fruit and its packaging into the same garbage can.
2.What does the author want to show by writing Paragraph 2?
A.The new garbage sorting rules in Shanghai are strict.
B.Garbage sorting puts Shanghai residents into trouble.
C.It is not easy to learn how to sort garbage.
D.It’s necessary to sort garbage in Shanghai.
3.What is Chen Liwen’s attitude towards garbage sorting in China?
A.Hopeful. B.Doubtful.
C.Uninterested. D.Worried.
4.Which of the following is mentioned as a benefit of garbage sorting?
A.It helps reduce the burden of individuals.
B.It makes smart garbage cans affordable.
C.It helps improve China’s hard power.

He was there every morning, sitting motionless on the front steps of his house. In the morning light, I could see the shadows that were etched(蚀刻)deep within the lines surrounding his eyes.
Each morning I walked this route with my daughter to her kindergarten class. We were new to the neighborhood so that I didn’t know many of my neighbors. On one beautiful autumn morning, as we passed his house, my daughter called out to him, “Hi, Mr. Man!” Always the outgoing child, I wasn’t surprised at her enthusiasm. But her cheerfulness soon faded when the man didn’t look at her and say “Hi” back.
As we continued on our walk to school, my daughter asked why the man didn’t want to say hi to her. Because I didn’t have an answer, I said simply, “Maybe he is having a bad day.” later I knew that Bob lost his wife in a car accident.
A few days later, as we approached Bob’s house on our way to school, my daughter called out “Hi Mr. Man!” and as usual, he didn’t respond. But then she ran onto his front lawn and picked up a beautiful red autumn leaf. She continued up one step and handed it to him. I held my breath.
As she skipped back to me, she said, “See you tomorrow, Mr. Man!” This time, he acknowledged her. In a soft gentle voice, he tanked her and said, “See you tomorrow.”
From then on, Bob and my daughter exchanged greeting each morning. Our friendship with Bob continued for many years. But, the sweetest day is when Bob attended my daughter’s high school graduation. My six-year-old son, Stephen, was in front of the TV and smiled. His favorite show was about to begin---a Phoenix Suns basketball game.
“Ladies and gentlemen," the announcer’s voice was heard, “here is your starting lineup (首发阵容).” The arena (球场) darkened and the lights flashed when the players ran into the court to sing their team song. Stephen clapped and danced around. My wife Lorrie and I laughed. Stephen had been performing this for months. “One day I’m going to take you to a game, son,” I promised.
About a year later, the construction company where I worked finished a project for a Suns player. One afternoon my boss called me. “The player has two extra tickets for tonight’s game! Just pick them up at my office,” he said. I picked up the tickets, but felt a little disappointed when I looked at the clock. Even if I had had a helicopter, we would never have gone to the arena in time for the player introductions. Stephen would miss his favorite part! I grabbed my key, got Stephen in my car and hit the road. “Lord,” I prayed, “I’d love to see the joy on Stephen’s face. Help us make it on time.”
When I drove, it began to rain heavily. Suddenly, lightning flashed right near the arena! I turned on the radio to listen to the game. The announcer said there’d been a power failure at America West Arena. Everyone was fine, but there would be a delay until they got everything running. Finally, I parked the car and we walked in hurriedly to take our seats. I hoped that we hadn’t missed the introductions.
The very moment we entered the arena, the lights darkened. The music started. “Ladies and gentlemen, here’s your starting lineup!” Stephen’s eyes grew wide. There wasn’t enough space for him to dance around, but I could tell that his heart was leaping more than his body was able to. Thank heaven, he hadn’t missed a thing. And neither had I.

B. He bought the tickets from his boss.

B. The arena where the game would take place was too old.
C. It was too late for them to catch the beginning of the game.
D. He had no way to get a helicopter to take his son to the arena.
3.What might cause the delay of the game?
A. The arena was too wet and dirty after the heavy rain.
B. Lightning destroyed something at the arena.
C. The audience did not come to the arena on time.
D. The players came to the arena late because of the heavy rain.
4.What did the author mean by saying “And neither had I”?
A. He kept his promise to his son. B. He didn’t lose his job.
