We knew Sylvia and Jack had problems with their flats, but we hadn’t been told the details. Not until they came for a weekend in October, that is.
At dinner on the Friday evening Kitty said, “You wrote that the flat wasn’t quite what you expected. Of course it could be too small. You’re sharing with another couple, aren’t you?”
“Were sharing, Mother,” Slyvia replied.
“It really wasn’t necessary,” Jack explained proudly, “I’ve had a big rise, and we can easily manage. It’s much better to be independent.”
“Oh, much,” I agreed.
“What was the trouble?” Kitty asked, impatient and unwilling to let her go.
“Nothing much,” Sylvia said, “The flat is fine. It was the other couple, Sally and Tom Ford. You’ve never seen such an untidy pair. We shared the sitting room and the kitchen and the bathroom anfd got fed up with the mess of it all.”
“And what made it worse,” Jack put in, “was that they accused us of the same sort of thing. Tom and I nearly came to blows when he locked up some of their wedding presents we were all using, as they used ours, naturally.”
“You take a chance when you make a sharing arrangement.” Kitty said.
“I am in my own flat,” Sylvia said, “Sally and Tom left a month ago.”
“We could have left instead,” Jack said, “But why we should leave? After all, the flat was in our names, not theirs. We were glad to see the back of them.”
Two weeks later Kitty and I returned their visit for lunch on Sunday. It was the first time we had been to their flat. To say that we were shocked is not true, because we know our daughter extremely well. The flat had fairly recently been in quite good condition; it was now a chaos. I did not know how anyone could possibly live there. But Sylvia noticed nothing.
1.Who was Kitty?
A.The owner of the flat.

Myles Kerr knew that being a Marine (水兵) comes with a lot of responsibility, but despite the huge weight he has on his shoulders, he has not forgotten the essence of being a public servant — that of being human.
Seven years ago, a photo of a Marine and a young boy running a marathon immediately went viral after it was shared on social media. But what seemed like a simple image packed a much deeper backstory. This story happened in 2013, but its relevance is still as powerful as ever.
The pair were running The Jeff Drench Memorial 5K in Charlevoix, Michigan when Myles Kerr came across Brandon Fuchs, a 9-year old boy struggling to keep up with the rest of his group. Brandon, exhausted and out of breath, asked the Marine: “Will you run with me?”
People who had their eyes on the prize would have refused, but the 19 -year -old was different. Being a Marine, he knew exactly what he should do. Kerr put aside his goal of beating his mates and instead slowed down to accompany the struggling boy to the finish line.
Because he chose to help the boy, the Marine ended up with the slowest time in his age group, according to the 5K results online.
Though he might have lost the race, the Marine won over people’s hearts. His act of kindness was celebrated on social media.
Kerr didn’t expect that his simple gesture would attract so much attention. He responded to a tweet praising his actions saying, “I was just doing what any man would do, but thank you! ” He also tweeted that he received gifts from the Fuchs family for helping out Brandon.

Brian knew he had been drinking more and more, but he was convinced that he'd return to more moderate drinking when he wasn't so pressured at work, and that "a few too many drinks now and then" wasn't a major problem.
"My wife and father were on me to stop drinking, but you know how critical and protective family can be," said Brian. "So I blew them off."
It wasn't until his friend Jack spoke up that Brian started to think differently. "That really hit home, because I wouldn’t expect a friend to confront me with something that personal unless it was very important," said Brian. "Jack said he was really concerned about me. He pointed out that my personality changed after I had a few beers--that I became belligerent(寻衅的). For a normally easy-going guy, that was a dramatic change in behavior."
Jack could see that Brian's numerous drinking binges(放纵) were causing problems. Brian was frequently calling into work sick and falling behind in his work, and his marriage was seriously on the ropes. Brian was teetering(摇摇欲坠) on the edge of disaster. "I didn't want to see a good life and a good friendship ruined," said Jack, "so I approached Brian, shared my honest observations with him, and suggested that he seek help."
After a couple days of soul searching, though still reluctant, Brian took Jack's suggestion and was assessed by an addiction professional. The expert recommended that Brian check into a treatment center, and one day later Brian did so.
Many people fear taking the path that Jack took. Speaking up to a friend who may have a problem with alcohol or other drugs can be a tricky undertaking.
Yet it's true that a concerned friend can do a lot. Most people don't recognize they have a substance abuse problem and most don't seek help for a problem until someone close to them intervenes(干预).
1.What happened to Brian according to the passage?
A. He suffered from an illness called alcohol addiction.
B. He changed so much that he was deserted by his family.
C. He became morally corrupted drinking too much all day.
D. He drank a little more than normal to escape the pressure.
2.What does “that” in the 3rd paragraph refer to?
A. Brian’s drinking binges. B. Jack’s talk with Brian.
C. Wife and father’s intervention. D. Brian’s different thoughts.
3. Brian could accept Jack’s suggestions mainly because ____________.
A. he found his friend was very critical and protective
B. Jack’s suggestions were professional and persuasive
C. Jack and Brian’s family had different opinions
D. he knew his friend wouldn’t easily intervene his personal affair
4. Brian’s alcohol abuse brought him many problems EXCEPT ____________.
A. his refusal to listen to his family B. his bad temper and aggressiveness
C. his failure to do his work well D. his marriage problems
5. The writer narrates Brian’s story in order to ____________.
A. tell us the bad results of alcohol addiction
B. warn us not to fall into the habit of drinking
C. show friends have real power to intervene
D. prove a friend in need is a friend indeed
