A new urban sport, parkour, is hitting the streets. It has evolved from obstacle course training into a fitness option for young people. In parkour, the outside world is the gym! 1. The goal of parkour is a direct route from one place to another. You meet an obstacle, you overcome it.
Mark Toorock, who teaches the techniques of parkour at his fitness gym, says that parkour is a method to train the body and mind using obstacles as the medium. He says that this new sport is demanding and takes years to master. 2.
But Toorock, who used to be a martial arts expert, says that everyone can benefit from learning the basic skills involved in parkour like running, jumping and crawling (爬行). These are the things that humans used to have to do all the time. 3. The original idea of parkour was to return to running and jumping as basic elements in moving from one place to another.
Georges Hebert, a French navy officer, was so impressed by the effortless athleticism of African tribes that he devised a training method based on running, climbing, jumping, balancing and throwing. The word parkour comes from parcours de combatant, the French term for a military obstacle course. 4.
Dr Kenneth Kao explains that the sport of parkour is not extreme — it is the environment which is extreme and dangerous. Being outside, jumping off railings and flipping over park benches can be quite frightening, so parkour courses in gyms concentrate on practicing all the individual moves to make everything easier. 5. However, that is not real parkour because it’s indoors with a fixed obstacle. The goal for everyone is to go outdoors.
A.Gyms provide thick floor matting (垫子) for rolling and rubberized boxes for jumping over.
B.The bridges, buildings and railings (栏杆) of each and every city are the equipment.
C.Every action in parkour is natural, so everyone must have the ability to move in this way.
D.Parkour was introduced into china in recent years and has gained popularity.
E.But today, due to modern transport, these basic skills are no longer used on a regular basis.
F.The French word for people who participate in the sport is traceurs or traceuses.
G.Beginners should realize that they won’t be jumping over buildings any time soon!

Jumping across cities
Forget about expensive gyms; the new sport in cities is free-running. Since it started in a Paris suburb around 1995, free-running has attracted lots of fans in cities around the world. Instead of walking normally, free-runners jump over or around anything―cars, buildings, trees, or streetlights―in their way.
One of the sport’s inventors told our reporter how free-running started.
It was boring where we lived. There was nothing for us to do after school. We had done playground games like football and basketball when we were kids but we wanted something new and exciting. We started learning how to jump and run between buildings―and we loved it. Walking is a waste of time. Free-runners have to use their imaginations. Everything―a tree, a streetlight―is part of our outdoor gym. We’re like children because we have never stopped playing in the street.
The sport’s website has lots of rules, for example, don’t break people’s windows, don’t jump on flowerbeds and don’t be rude to people who want you to stop. Safety is also very important. You must start with the easy moves―you have to do thousands of small practice jumps before you try anything difficult. If you made only one mistake, you might hurt yourself badly.
A local person said, “It’s good that young people have something to do. But when they jump off buildings like cats, they sometimes frighten other people.”
Don’t try this at home: the basics of free-running
Blind Jump: a jump where you can’t see the landing spot.
Tic-tac: run and put your foot on a small step, go forward and jump over the next thing.
Basic Jump: run and jump, land on two feet while bending your knees. To finish roll into head-over-heels.
Cat Jump: run towards a wall, put both hands on the top of the wall and jump through your arms.

It is probably the strangest sport anyone has ever invented. And at first sight, it looks like the easiest. Competitors have to do two things. The first is to stand still. The second is to place their hands anywhere on the body of a car, and keep it there.
This is where things start getting difficult. Lots of people are doing the same thing. And the winner of the “handstand” contest is the person who can carry on doing it for the longest time. That person gets to own the car.
It still seems to be an easy thing to do. At the beginning it is. Anyone can stand still. But when the contest has been going for four or five days, standing still seems like the most difficult job in the world . And keeping the hand in place over this time becomes an act of serious attention. After a few days, the hand seems to belong to someone else----someone who wants to go home and get some sleep.
Competitors are allowed to take a five-minute break every hour to eat, drink or do whatever else is necessary. No one is allowed to lean on the car for support. Winners need to be able to show great powers of attention. They also need to be able to develop special skills.
Maybe the popularity of the “handathon” is due to the fact that it is not necessary to be a trained athlete to enter. Competitors in the Longview handathon certainly don’t seem to do much preparation. Most say they will prepare by “getting lots of sleep”. Others say they will “eat healthy food” or “pray for success”. The whole event gives ordinary people the chance to do something interesting and win something in the end.
Handathons are competitions, but there is little rivalry (竞争) between competitors. They help each other out and keep each other’s spitits up. People who drop out early return with food, drink and encouragement.
1.What ability is most important in a handathon?
A. Not leaning on the car B. Standing without any support
C. Having strong powers of attention D. Eating and drinking in five minutes
2.Why is handathon popular?
A. Anyone who is interested can join in it.
B. Someone can win with special training
C. It doesn’t need to make any preparation
D. People get along well with each other in it.
3.Which of the following statements about the “handathon” is right?
A. Competitors are not allowed to drop out
B. Competitors don’t encourage each other
C. Competitors can sit down and take a 10-minute break every hour
D. A competitor has to place his or her hand anywhere on the body of a car.
4.Which is the writer’s opinion about the “handathon”?
A. It is the easiest of all sports.
B. It can last a whole day.
C. It is not as easy as it looks at first.
D. It is no good competing in a “handathon”

Maybe it has been the influence of the current scene: the hype(大肆宣传) among urban biking. Apparently, urban biking requires entirely different bikes than suburban biking does and therefore a Bike Design Project started where five design studio across five cities had to come up with a perfect urban bike. The winning bike will be manufactured (制造) for a limited run of 100 bikes and will be in stores next year. Industry, a Portland-based studio, came up with a very interesting bike: one that uses Bluetooth and handlebars that tell you when to stop or turn.
Industry worked together with Ti Cycles to create a bike with 3D printed titanium frame. The bike is called Solid and can connect to a smart phone App: My Bike. This App alarms a user when a light needs replacement and if something gets wrong with one’s brakes. There is also software called Discover My City, which has a series of routes through Portland’s most trendy neighborhoods, with suggestions, about where to eat and shop.
Nevertheless, the idea with cycling is that you need to focus on the road and not on your smart phone. This bike therefore uses integrated (整合的) feedback on handlebars. Those handlebars tell a user when to turn, as they will buzz(嗡嗡叫) when a turn appears. As you are getting closer, they will buzz more frequently. And then there is the possibility to control your light via built-in sensors and change gears(齿轮) by pressing an electronic button.
Although the bicycle looks highly interesting and can be seen as a piece of art for the designing world, we don’t know if we would like our bike to have an automatic buzz when we are approaching a turn. On the other side, it could add some extra safety to traffic in general. Whether you like the bike or not, you have to admit the Portland-based studio brings the concept of urban biking to a whole new level.

NEW YORK— The band Atomic Tom has scored an Internet hit with its self-created video to the song Take Me Out. In the video, the band members ride a New York City subway while performing entirely on iPhones, with applications linked with broadcasters(播送设备) for each instrument.
Singer Luck White says the production was a top-secret operation. “We didn’t tell anyone about this. It was completely top-secret from our family, from our friends, from management, from everybody. So the first time that people saw this video was last Friday when we put it on YouTube,”explained White.
It has been watched by more than 2 million on YouTube since debuting(首次露面) last week. “All I’ve wanted to do for the past few days is just stare at the YouTube page and keep refreshing(刷新) it to see how far it will go,” said Espiritu, the lead guitarist of the band.
“The Internet changed everything,” Espiritu said. “ It's kind of an exciting time because it forces everyone to be creative and find new ways to get your name out there.”
The idea for the video came from Espiritu’s 24-year-old brother Benjamin, who’s hoping to go to film school. “I've seen a lot of these music applications, and they’re fascinating to me,” Benjamin Espiritu said, “I thought: What would happen if iPhones took over the world? If there could actually be a band that played straight through with iPhones, what would that look like?” So they shot(拍摄) the video —with iPhones also serving as video cameras. The band also tried Union Square but were stopped during playing because they didn't have a permit.
“The YouTube views are translating into album(唱片) sales.” Espiritu said, “We’ve seen the jump.” Their album has been in the top 10 albums on iTunes.
Will their fans start cheering for iPhone-only performances? “We’ve gotten the most exposure(曝光)and the most fans that we’ve ever gotten through this, so I wouldn’t be surprised if fans are going to want to see that.” Espritu said.
1.Who first saw the band’s video to the song Take Me Out?
