Suddenly Uncle Henry stood up. “There’s a cyclone coming, Em,” he called to his wife. “I’ll go look after the stock.” Then he ran toward the sheds where the cows and horses were kept.
Aunt Em dropped her work and came to the door. One glance told her of the danger close at hand. “Quick, Dorothy!” she screamed. “Run for the cellar!” Toto jumped out of Dorothy’s arms and hid under the bed, and the girl started to get him. Aunt Em, badly frightened, threw open the trap door in the floor and climbed down the ladder into the small, dark hole. Dorothy caught Toto at last and started to follow her aunt. When she was halfway across the room there came a great roar from the wind, and the house shook so hard that she lost her footing and sat down suddenly upon the floor.
Then a strange thing happened. The house circled around two or three times and rose slowly through the air. Dorothy felt as if she were going up in a balloon. It was very dark, and the wind blew horribly around her, but Dorothy found she was riding quite easily. After the first few twists and turns, and one other time when the house tipped badly, she felt as if she were being rocked gently, like a baby in a cradle (摇篮). Toto did not like it. He ran about the room, now here, now there, barking loudly; but Dorothy sat quite still on the floor and waited to see what would happen.
At last she crawled over the swinging floor to her bed, and lay down upon it; and Toto followed and lay down beside her. In spite of the swinging of the house and the crying of the wind, Dorothy soon closed her eyes and fell fast asleep.

One day in my class, the children were busy preparing for the coming concert. Suddenly Patty came up to me and said, “Every year I-g-g-g-get to be a quiet student. The other kids are always in a p-p-p-play or something. This year, I w-w-want to recite a p-p-p-poem myself!”
Watching her eager eyes, I had no way to refuse her request. So I had to promise her that she would have a “reciting” part. That promise proved to be very difficult to keep. None of my books had any proper poems for her. So I had to spend most of the night writing a poem for her. It was not excellent, but it was enough to cope with Patty’s speech problem.
From then on, Patty spent a lot of time practicing the reciting every day. With my help, she made great progress. However, an unexpected thing happened when the concert was about to start. The MC(报幕员)came to me with anger, waving his printed program. “There has been a mistake! You have listed Patty for a recitation. That girl can’t even say her own name without stuttering.” Because there was not enough time for explanations, I said to him angrily, “We know what we are doing.”
The concert was going very well. When it was time for Patty’s recitation, the MC again said that Patty would embarrass everyone. Losing patience, I shouted to him loudly, “Patty will do her part. You do yours. Just introduce her number.”
The curtain parted to show Patty, excited and confident. In perfect control, Patty uttered each syllable clearly helped by my gestures. At last, she made her bow, with tears in her eyes.
The curtain closed. At first silence held the audience, then the silence gave way to warm and lasting applause. Patty threw her arms around me and said to me excitedly, “We d-d-d-did it!”
1. What was the challenge for Patty to prepare for the concert?
A. She hadn’t enough time to practice.
B. She wasn’t popular with the students in her class.
C. She couldn’t recite words clearly owing to stuttering.
D. There weren’t proper poems for her at all.
2.The author yelled at the MC loudly because_____.
A. he made a mistake about the printed program
B. he showed no respect for the author

I’d been trying for weeks to come up with an idea for my next book. And then suddenly the idea came: Why not write about a celebrity reporter signing up as a hospital volunteer so she could gain access to a movie star who was a patient of the hospital? The heroine would be motivated totally by her career until she learned that in helping others, we help ourselves.
Sounded like a romantic comedy with uplifting message, but first, there was the matter of research. I’d have to observe hospital volunteers. I headed over to my nearby hospital and asked the director of volunteers if I might hang around for a day or two just to research my story. Her answer, “No. If you really want to see what it’s like to be a volunteer, you should become one.”
Become a volunteer? I was not wild about being in close to people with germs (细菌). I would just skip the research, I thought, then reminded myself that I did need to spend quality time at the hospital if I wanted to write credibly about my heroine’s journey. So I signed up, was given my uniform and ID badge (徽章), and reported for duty. My “job” was to wheel a magazine cart throughout the large facility and, in the process, be a shoulder to lean on.
At the beginning, my focus was on my novel. And then a funny thing happened: I stopped researching and started realizing that I might actually be making a difference in people’s lives. A woman who’d just been diagnosed with lung cancer thanked me for brushing her hair and applying her lipstick. A man who was wasting away from AIDS called me his “angel”, simply because I took twenty minutes to note down the letter he dictated to his mother.
Now long after finishing my book, I continued to volunteer. Friends would ask, “Isn’t it depressing at that place?” “On the contrary,” I’d say and mean it.
1.Why did the author want to observe hospital volunteers?
A.She intended to write stories about them.
B.She was preparing for her volunteering jobs.
C.She hoped to gain access to a movie star.
D.She wanted to make her heroine’s story realistic.
2.What can we infer from paragraphs 3&4?
A.The author was determined to become a volunteer in the beginning.
B.The author was meant to shoulder the responsibility of the patients.
C.The patients the author met and the appreciation she received changed her.
D.The patients relied on the author to help them survive in the hospital.
3.In what way is the author similar to the heroine of her book?
A.Motivated by their career, they succeed.
B.By lifting other’s spirits, they lift their own.
C.Being volunteers, they spread uplifting messages.
D.By providing support to others, they are appreciated.
4.What can be a suitable title of the passage?
A.My Turn: Life as a Hospital Volunteer.
B.My Discovery: I Can Make a Difference.
C.My Investigation: Celebrities in Hospital.
D.My Identity: a Volunteer in a Hospital.

Maureen stood by the lake. Suddenly the other children came running through the trees with sharp cries of excitement. They rushed up to the lake, leaning over the clear water, watching the crowds of tiny fish. Some children demanded loudly to go to the boats, but all at once those who had been left behind at the ice-cream stall (小摊) came running up to make some announcement or other, and they all left the water and dashed back the way they had come. With growing excitement, Maureen ran after them.
When she saw what had been run for, she stopped running. They were buying things again. The toy stall was open and they were crowding around it. Behind the stall a middle-aged woman was selling a great variety of small rubbish. She took money from the forest of small hands in exchange for little boats, plastic dolls, yellow pencils and rubbers, or anything. Maureen leaned against a tree, looking on. The idea of spending washed against her face like a strong current, trying to draw her in.
Nona Parker pushed out to the edge of the group and laid what she had bought on the ground so that she could see what money she had left in her white purse. Under Maureen's eyes lay a boat, a mouth organ, and little plates of doll’s food in coloured plaster—a brown load of bread, a joint of beef, a pink pudding—all tiny and terribly desirable. Maureen was so full of the wish for the things like that that she couldn't bear to look at them. She turned her head sharply. Her face against the tree, she shut her eyes and prayed eagerly for some money, for the price of a set of toy plates.
In a moment, she opened her eyes, but she didn't turn back to the stall. It was too painful to see the others buying whatever they wanted. She rubbed almost round the tree, her eyes on the ground. And there under her feet was a ten-pence piece.
1.Why did children dash back on hearing some announcement?
A. To watch tiny fish.
B. To buy new toys.
C. To collect various rubbish.
D. To see a middle-aged woman.

A. was too shy to push her way in
B. thought the other children were rich
C. knew the stall was selling rubbish
D. couldn't afford to buy anything
3.Maureen's strong desire for the plates of doll’s food grew when _______.
A. she happened to see what Nona had bought
B. Nona checked her remaining money
C. she saw other children buying things freely
D. Nona was pushed to the edge of the group
4.Seeing the others buying so many wonderful things, Maureen felt _______.
