Did you ever wonder how some of your favorite foods, products or toys came about? Believe it or not, they may have been an accident, or a failure of some other intention. Below, we found three mistakes we’re thankful for turned out to be what they are.
1. Most historians hold that the Chinese invented fireworks in the 9th century when they
discovered how to make gunpowder. Story has it that a Chinese cook accidentally mixed together what were then considered common kitchen items and noticed they burnt. When put tightly in a bamboo tube and lit, it blew up.
2. In May of 1886, a law led John Pemberton, a pharmacist(药剂师), to rewrite the formula(配方) for "Pemberton’s French Wine Coca,” his popular headache treatment. Containing sugar instead of wine as a sweetener, the outcome became something for Coke, which was later mixed with carbonated water. His bookkeeper suggested the name Coca-Cola because he thought the two C’s would look good together, which is how what we call Coca-Cola, a world –wide drink came into being.
3. During World War II, scientists at the University of Birmingham invented the magnetron—an important heat-producing part of the microwave oven(微波炉). While working for Raytheon Corporation after the war, the American engineer Percy Spencer was testing the magnetron when a chocolate bar in his pocket melted. He went on to test other foods including popcorn kernels, and found it to be a much more efficient way to cook. In 1947 Raytheon came out with the first restaurant microwave oven, which was six feet tall and weighed 750 lbs.

Believe it or not, a rain check is not a weather report. A rain check is a small piece of paper. When can you get a rain check? Well, if you are going to a ball game or some other open-air activity and it is called off because of rain or some other reason, you may receive a rain check. With it you may go there again without paying.
You may also receive a rain check at a shop. As you know, sometimes when you go to a shop to buy something which is on sale, it is sold out. You may ask the assistant to give you a rain check and with it you can go again next time to buy what you need at the sale price.
Here’s another way to use this word. If someone invites you to go somewhere, you would like to go very much but cannot, you may say “May I have a rain check?” This means, “I will come next time.” But you can never say “May I take a rain check?” when your teacher gives you some homework.

Lao-tzu and Confucius were China’s most famous philosophers. 1. “Those who know do not say; those who say do not know.” said Lao-tzu. Confucius said that the best people say the least, but do the most.
2. It comes from the story that he was born with white hair, already old and wise. ? Very little is known about Lao-tzu’ s life. His writings are titled the “Tao Te Ching”.
According to Taoism, the entire universe flows with a mysterious force called the Tao, which means “The Way”. 3. When people forget this, opinions of good and evil or true and false happen. Taoists try to remember their oneness. However, this is easier said than done, Lao-tzu said. Over time, Taoism changed a bit. ? Taoism became more popular in AD 440 when it became China’s state religion. Many people practice Taoism today.
Born in 551 BC, Confucius wandered throughout China as a government employee and a political adviser to the ruling Chou family. 4. After Corfucius died in 479 BC, his students wrote down his teachings and called them Lun-yu, or the Analects. Many of his clever sayings are still followed today. “It is as hard to be poor without complaining as to be rich without becoming arrogant (傲慢的).” Confucianism says it is important to learn to be human. People should act with goodness towards each other to create order and unity. Confucianism guided thinking in China until about a hundred years ago.
Taoism and Confucianism have differences and similarities. Confucianism tells people how to act toward each other. Taoism tells people how to find meaning in life. They both share ideas about man, society, and the universe. Both Taoism and Confucianism have served as guides. 5.
