When was the last time you were late and expected someone to understand? How about the time you left your dishes on the table for someone else to clean up? Or perhaps you left the lid on the peanut butter jar loose, and the person after you opened the jar to find it dry and not fresh.
Often, we are eager to ignore our own faults. But we have higher standards when it comes to our expectations of someone else who has the same expectations. We need to as equally understand the weaknesses of others and excuse them just as we excuse ourselves.
Two of my strengths are punctuality(准时) and organization. I like to meet deadlines when they are due and keep the space around my computer neat and orderly. But sometimes things happen, and I slip from being perfect. When this happens, I show myself mercy and lower the standard for myself. However, if someone else makes a mess around my computer, I might not show them as much mercy as I show myself. If it can happen to me, then I should be willing to realize that it can happen to someone else as well.
I am not suggesting that we should not work on improving our faults, or that it should be right to be late or leave a mess behind us. Although we should always be working towards self-improvement, we shouldn’t have a double standard that says we are excused from our own mistakes but we cannot excuse someone else. If we are not 100-percent perfect, we shouldn’t expect others to be.
Mercy shows an understanding heart. If we are blind to our own faults, we will not be very merciful towards others. Showing a little mercy goes a long way when life’s little mistakes take place. When the tables are turned, showing mercy towards someone’s shortcomings could cause us to receive some in return.

A. we all make a mess sometimes
B. we all need private space
C. we should accept others’ help with gratitude
D. we should not open the lid on the peanut butter jar
2.How does the author develop the third paragraph?
A. By raising questions. B. By giving examples.
C. By analyzing opinions. D. By showing research findings
3.The underlined part, “When the tables are turned” in the last paragraph, can be best replaced by____________.
A. “When good luck comes” B. “When benefits increase”
C. “When our mistakes happen” D. “When the situation is changed”
4.What would be the best title for this passage?
A. Changing Bad Daily Habits B. Excusing Our Own Faults
C. Being Merciful Toward Others D. Working Toward Self-improvement

If you don’t use it, you lose it. At least, that’s how the old saying goes. It refers to the idea that something which does not get used regularly quickly falls into a state of decline. Muscles, for example, will waste away without use. In order to resist this, people take regular exercise to keep their skills sharp.
Well, what about the brain? As we age, our brains can naturally begin to decline. In some cases, this can lead to certain mental conditions such as dementia (痴呆), which I’m sure you will agree, no one wants. However, all is not lost because these days it’s relatively easy to train your brain. Smart phones and apps have put programmes into our hands that can test, maintain and even improve our memories, mathematical skills and a lot of other mental abilities. With a little practice every day, we can keep our brains nice and sharp, right?
Well, no, actually. According to a report from the Global Council on Brain Health, even though many people thought it was important to play online games, such as puzzles and mind games, which are designed to improve brain health, the evidence of the benefits was “weak to non-existent”.
There are other ways to promote the old grey matter. It recommends seeking out new activities that challenge the way you think and are socially engaging, while leading to a healthy lifestyle. Among their suggestions are practising tai chi, taking photography classes, learning new technologies, gardening, art projects or volunteering.
There’s more good news, too. James Goodwin, chief scientist at Age UK has said that brain decline is not inevitable (不可避免的). As long as the activities are “new to you and require your concentrated attention”, they can provide benefits for brain health. So, hurry up, get out there and try something new. Maybe it’s time to try that hobby you’ve always wanted to do. And as for me? I’m off to learn the piano.

A.How to spend time meaningfully at an old age.
B.How to keep brain sharp.

Life-long learning is the concept that “It’s never too soon or too late for learning.” — a philosophy that has taken root in a larger number of different organizations. Life-long learning is an attitude — learners believe that one can and should be open to new ideas, decisions, skills or behaviors. Life-long learning throws the well-known rule “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks” out of the door. Life-long learning provides the general public with learning opportunities at all ages and in different ways: at work, at home and through leisure activities, not just through formal channels such as school and higher education.
Life-long education is often achieved through distance learning or e-learning, continuing education, home schooling, etc. It also includes training programs for those who want to improve their qualifications, bring their skills up to date or retrain for a new line of work. In later life, especially in retirement, continued learning takes various forms, crossing traditional academic limits.
One of the reasons why life-long education has become so important is the rapid progress of modern science and technology. Although the period of primary, secondary and university education is increased, the knowledge and skills gained there are usually not sufficient for a professional career spanning(跨越) three or four decades.
1.The philosophy of life-long learning goes against the concept that “ ______”.
A. It’s never too late to learn.
B. Whoever cares to learn will always find a teacher.
C. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
D. You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.
2.What is the main idea behind life-long education?
A. To force people to keep in learning new skills throughout their working life.
B. To provide teachers with extra income.
C. To allow people to have chances to receive education throughout their life.
D. To prevent students from learning at school.
3.The underlined word “sufficient” in the last paragraph can be replaced by “______”.
A. popular B. well-educated
C. well-informed D. enough
4.It can be inferred that ______.
A. life-long education is the requirement of fast development of education
B. the increased period of school education is a supplement(补充) to life-long learning
C. the education system is failing to keep pace with rapid technology development
D. life-long education is intended for retired workers at home
