People who report news sometimes find themselves in the news. This is especially true for foreign correspondents(记者), who risk their lives to bring us important stories from dangerous parts of the world. To learn more about the life of a foreign correspondent, we interviewed Tim Craig, who has covered the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Q1: What draw you personally to dangerous places?
Tim Craig (TC): Experiencing problems that still exist in the world, seeing the struggles that soldiers face to keep peace, and the calamity that people meet during the war, and gaining a better understanding of how people from different countries live.
Q2: What do you like about your job?
TC: I like being able to talk to lots of different people about their problems and concerns. Sometimes the job can make you sad. You have to talk to kids who don't get enough to eat, or to someone whose mother or father was killed. But then I get to try to help these people by writing about their lives and problems.
Q3 : Do you worry about your own safety? How do you deal with that?
TC: Yes, I do worry, but I try not to think about it all the time. In Pakistan, many places are still safe enough for me to travel to without having to worry a lot about being injured, killed or kidnapped(绑架). There are, however, some places where I have to think about my safety all the time. Generally, it's best to travel with someone else so that we can help each other if something goes wrong. In dangerous places,. I also try not to stay in one spot for too long.

TC : Being independent and able to quickly make decisions, being a good planner in order to reach places that may be hard to get to by car or plane, and being a good listener.

The biggest challenge faced by travelers especially those who like to have a backpacking trip is how to ensure a steady supply of clean clothes. Now, thanks to a great invention called Scrubba Wash Pack, that worry may be a thing of the past.
The portable washing machine was invented by Ash Newland in 2010, while planning to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. Struck by the limited packing space, he got inspiration from traditional washboards to create a bag that could be used to clean clothes. Then he quitted his career as a lawyer and focused on perfecting the bag’s design. By 2012, the bag was ready for the public. It weighed only 180 grams and required very little storage space, making it perfect for anyone wishing to travel light.
Not surprisingly, the bag worth 55 dollars was an instant hit with travelers, university students and even passengers. However, Newland was not satisfied. He still saw a flaw with his invention – dirty clothes had to be carried around in a separate bag! The recently introduced Scrubba Wash Pack solves that problem.
In order to make the pack active, dirty clothes are placed inside the bag along with two to three liters of water. The bag is then shut tightly to ensure all air is squeezed out and the clothes are massaged for a few minutes. After a quick wash, they are clean and ready to be dried. According to Newland, the pack can clean anything from jeans to smelly socks! What’s even more amazing is that with a capacity to hold 13-liters of water, it can be used to wash more clothes at a time.
The best part is that the 99-dollar pack that will be available for sale later this year, only weighs 300 grams and is completely foldable, making it easy to store when it’s not in use. With the Scrubba Wash Pack, wandering through foreign cities searching for a washing shop, or paying for washing machines may soon be a thing of the past!

For some students, especially those from poor families, taking a job is not a matter of choice, but necessity. They need to work to save for college, or even to supplement family income. Counselors should help students who have a real need to work improve time management skills and seek employment that helps their educational goals.
“College costs are high, and young adults also want the amenities (便利设施) that extra money brings,” according to John B. Boshoven, counselor for continuing education at Community High School in Michigan. However, he warns, “School is my students’ full-time job.”
Studies show that students who work are more confident and possess better time management skills than students who are not employed. In addition to offering a paycheck, some independence, and satisfaction, a part-time job can provide teenagers with both training and experience. Working teaches students about responsibility and can also reinforce (充实) what they are learning in school. “Colleges want to find candidates who demonstrate maturity, responsibility, independence, and initiative, and good workers certainly demonstrate those important character traits,” Boshoven says. “Employers can write excellent recommendation letters for the students who have worked for them.”
On the other hand, experts agree that students who work more than 15 to 20 hours per week often experience lessened school success, which can lead to dropping out entirely. Working long hours can also limit opportunities to build friendships and explore interests that enhance a teenager’s intellectual and emotional development.
The major point that students should keep in mind is the importance of balance. Dan Crabtree, college and career counselor at Wheaton Academy in Illinois, explains, “We want our students to establish a healthy balance in life and work to maintain it throughout their lives.” If working will interfere with completing school work, participating in extracurricular activities, spending time with family and friends, or getting enough rest, it may not be a wise decision.
