For those of you who were born in the year of the pig, good luck and much success! This is your year.
When talking to a Westerner, however, you’ve got to be a little careful when you talk about pigs. Chinese people view the pig as a smart and prosperous (rich, lucky) animal. Western ideas tend to be a little more negative(否定的).
A pig in the West is seen as a dirty, lazy, and fat animal. If anyone ever called you a pig, you wouldn’t be smiling. When a person doesn’t like someone, sometimes he will call that person a pig.
If you ever meet a Westerner who was born in the year of the pig, don’t say, “ Oh, you’ re a pig!” Most Westerners will be understanding. They will be sure that you made some kind of mistake. However, don’t take any chances. You might just offend (触怒)someone who does not share your positive ideas about pigs.
1.
According to the passage we can see that Chinese people think of the pig as a ________ animal.
A. clever B. rich C. good D. all the above
2.
A Westerner will call someone a pig if he ______ that man.
A. dislikes B. is afraid of C. looks up to D. makes fun of
3.
When you call a Westerner a pig, who was born in the year of the pig, most of them _______.
A. will be angry B. will be very surprised
C. can forgive D. may quarrel with you
4.
From the passage we can conclude that ________.
A. it’s impolite to talk about pigs
B. Westerners do not like pigs as much as the Chinese
C. in general, Westerners and the Chinese don’t like pigs
D. all of the Chinese like pigs better than Westerners

How’s this for a coincidence (巧合)? Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln were born in the same year, on the same day: Feb. 12, 1809. Although people hardly think of them together, yet we want to say that they belong together. It’s not just because they were both great men, and not because they happen to live at the same time. Rather, it’s because the scientist and the politician each started a revolution that changed the world.
They were both revolutionaries in the sense that both men changed the realities when they were born. They seem and sound modern to us, because the world they left behind them is more or less the one we still live in. So, considering the joint greatness of their contributions and the coincidence of their birthdays ---- it is hard to wonder: who was the greatest man? It’s an apples and oranges--- or Superman vs. Santa---comparison. But if you limit the question to influence, very quickly the balance tips in Lincoln’s favor.
As great as his book on evolution is, it does no harm to remember that Darwin hurried to publish The Origin of Species because he thought he was about to be scooped (抢先) by his fellow naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace. Lincoln, however, is unique. True, his election as the president did cause the recession (衰退) and the war, but that war seems certain to happen---not a question of if but when. Certainly we know what happened after he was murdered: Reconstruction was organized and then abandoned, leaving the issue of racial (种族的) equality unsolved for another century.
Surely we should not deny Darwin’s accomplishment. But their same birthdays gave us a great opportunity to observe these men of their time.
1.Why does the author say Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln belong together?
A.They were born on the same day.
B.They lived in the same period of time.
C.They started revolutions changing the world.
D.They were both great men in the history.
2.What does the author mean by “an apples and oranges---- or Superman vs. Santa --comparison” ?
A.It is hard to tell which one is greater as they are both outstanding.
B.The comparison between Darwin and Lincoln is easy and obvious.
C.It is difficult to compare them as they are as famous as Superman and Santa.
D.There is no point comparing them because they were born on the same day.
3.Lincoln’s contribution to the world can be best described as__________
A.narrow. B.aggressive.
C.independent. D.ground-breaking.
4.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Lincoln’s success in election caused reconstruction.
B.Lincoln had tried to solve the racial problem.
C.Darwin was unique compared with Lincoln.
D.Darwin’s theory is similar to Lincoln’s belief.

A study of older men in The Netherlands, known for its delicious chocolate, showed those who ate the same amount of one-third of a chocolate bar every day had lower blood pressure and a reduced risk of death.
The researchers say, however, it’s too early to conclude that it was the chocolate that led to better health. The men who ate more cocoa products could have eaten other food that made them healthier. Experts also point out that eating too much chocolate can make you fat — a risk for both heart disease and high blood pressure.
“It’s why too early to make recommendations about whether people should eat more cocoa or chocolate,” said Brian Buijsse, an expert for nutrition at Wageningen University in The Netherlands, who co-authored the study.
Still, the Dutch Study, supported by grants (拨款) from the Netherlands Prevention Foundation, appears to be the largest so far to document a health effect for cocoa beans. And it confirms findings of smaller, shorter-term studies that also linked chocolate with lower blood pressure.
Researchers examined the eating habits of 470 healthy men who were not taking blood pressure medicine. The men who ate the most products made from cocoa beans — including cocoa drinks, chocolate bars and chocolate pudding — had lower blood pressure and a 50 percent lower risk of death.
“This is a very important article providing epidemiological support for what many researchers have been observing is experimental models,” said Cesar Fraga of the University of California Davis, who does similar research but was not involved in the new study.
Could the study results apply to women?
“Our study consisted of elderly inch,” Buijsse said. “If you look at the other studies, you will see the same effects in men and women, younger people and older people. The findings may be generalizable to women, but you never know.”
1.We can infer from the last paragraph that ________.
A. It has been concluded that the findings are generalizable to women.
B. It needs confirming whether women can share the same effects.
C. The study results cannot apply to women.
D. The findings are applicable to both men and women.
2.Which of the following has the similar meaning to the underlined word “generalizable?”
A. useful B. popular
C. attractive D. important
3.What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To encourage us to eat as much chocolate as possible.
B. To prove to us that eating chocolate can reduce blood pressure.
C. To inform us of a study about the health benefits of chocolate.
D. To warn us not to eat cocoa products because they can make you fat.

For those who study the development of intelligence(智力)in the animal world, self-awareness is an important measurement. An animal that is aware(意识)of itself has a high
level of intelligence.
Awareness can be tested by studying whether the animal recognizes itself in the mirror, that is, its own reflected image(反射出的影像).Many animals fail this exercise bitterly, paying very little attention to the reflected image. Only humans, and some intelligent animals like apes and dolphins, have been shown to recognize that the image in the mirror is of themselves.
Now another animal has joined the club. In the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers report that an Asian elephant has passed the mirror self-reflection test. "We thought that elephants were the next important animal," said Diana Reiss of the Wildlife Conservation Society, an author of the study with Joshua M. Plotnik and Fans B.M. de Waal of Emory University. With their large brains, Reiss said, elephants "seemed like cousins to apes and
dolphins."
The researchers tested Happy, Maxine and Patty, three elephants at the Bronx Zoo. They put
an 8-foot-square mirror on a wall of the animals' play area (out of the sight of zoo visitors) and recorded what happened with cameras, including one built in the mirror.
The elephants used their long noses to find what was behind it, and to examine parts of their bodies.
Of the three, Happy then passed the test, in which a clear mark was painted on one side of her face. She could tell the mark was there by looking in the mirror, and she used the mirror to touch the mark with her long nose.
Diana Reiss said, "We knew elephants were intelligent, but now we can talk about their intelligence in a better way."
1.What can mirror tests tell us about animals?
A. Whether they have large brains.
B. Whether they have self-awareness.
C. Whether they enjoy outdoor exercises.
D. Whether they enjoy playing with mirrors.
2.Why does the author mention apes and dolphins in the text?
A. They are most familiar to readers.
B. They are big favorites with zoo visitors.
C. They are included in the study by Reiss.
D. They are already known to be intelligent.
3.What made Happy different from Maxine and Patty?
A. She used her nose to search behind the mirror.
B. She recognized her own image in the mirror.
C. She painted a mark on her own face.
D. She found the hidden camera.

Born blind is tough in any case. But things were even harder for Srikanth Bolla who was born in a small village in India, where the common belief was that kids with disabilities were “of no use” and therefore, better off dead. Fortunately, Srikanth’s parents loved their son and refused to give him up. Instead, they encouraged the blind boy to dream big and reach for the star.
Srikanth did not disappoint his parents. The now twenty-four-year-old is the founder CEO of Bollant Industries.
Of course, getting here was not easy. Being both blind and poor meant that Srikanth had to face hard challenges. As a young boy, Srikanth attended a regular school near his home. Unfortunately, the students and teachers didn’t quite like him because of his disability. As a result, the young boy was largely ignored and often spent the entire day alone.
Concerned this would hold back Srikanth’ s development, his family decided to send him to a special school in Hyderabad. Sure enough, the young boy soon rose to the top of his class, earning awards in speech and debate competitions. But Srikanth was prevented from studying sciences when he reached 10th grade, because it was thought too “dangerous” for a blind student. Not wanting to give up, Srikanth took legal action and became the first blind student in the country allowed to study sciences.
Late, after graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Srikanth set up Bollant Industries in 2012.For just four years, it has become a powerhouse with over 450 employees,70% of whom are physically challenged.

We live in a dangerous world. The figures for crime go up year by year. If you were attacked in the street, would you be able to defend yourself? Not very well probably, especially if someone was pointing a gun at you. We all see a lot of violence of films, but recently some programs on television showed how people can defend themselves without guns. For example, in one film a woman was attacked from behind. She threw the man, who was heavier and stronger than she was, over her head. Then she held him tightly on the ground. How? She knew Judo.
Jiu-jitsu, as judo is sometimes called, means "muscle science" in Japanese. The student of judo needs to learn a lot about the body, its bones and muscles. Judo uses a number of "falls", "holds" and "throws". Someone who does not know judo cannot defend himself against them. If you know judo you can defend yourself against a person who is stronger than you. You had better not practice judo on your friends unless they can fall without hurting themselves! Being strong is one thing, but using the body wisely is another. In judo, you use the other person's body to help you. You "throw" him to the ground and "hold" him there, so that he cannot move. Of course, it takes time and practice, but knowing judo is useful. In a violent world you ought to be able to defend yourself.
1.According to passage, in fact "judo" is ______.
A.the same as "Jiu-jitsu" B.a kind of fighting
C. a kind of muscle science D.is helpful to a strong man
2.Why does the writer say the world is dangerous?
A. The number of violence and crime is increasing every year.
B.Because many people carry guns.
C.Because there too many films.
D.Because people are not able to defend themselves.
3.Which of the following statement is true about the woman in the passage?
A.The woman held the man over her head.
B.The woman was heavier than the man.
C.The woman was able to defend herself.
D.The woman attacked the man from behind.
4.If a man knows judo, he ______.
A.will be good at muscle science.
B.will be able to avoid being attacked from his back.
C.may defeat any strong person.
D.can help himself by using the other person's body
5.What's the best title for this short passage?
A.How to defend oneself B.Violence in films
C.How to practise judo D.Something about judo
