The holiday's upon us. Finally, after months of study, you have some time to yourself. so, why not read a book? Well, some people will say, "Why bother with books? We have the Internet and other media that offer a lot more colorful entertainment. Books are history!" But don't be fooled. There's still a lot to be said for reading.
One clear reason is that a well-chosen book is a wonderful source of vocabulary, so long as you have a good dictionary, of course. Believe me, it's far easier to get new English words and phrases from a book or article than it is from the TV or the Internet.
But an even more important point is that books give you something that modern media simply can not. The average webpage is picture-heavy and the text is often designed to make it as easy to read as possible. While "easy" may be attractive, unfortunately it's little use for many long-term development of reading skills and the general language level. For that, there's still no substitute (替代品)of a book.
But perhaps the best single reason is that simply choosing what you read and doing it independently means that it's something you do by yourself. You can choose what you want to read. It's hard work, but something down the line, you will find that what once seemed like a duty is now a pleasure. We asked three bookworms -- an English teacher, a book editor and a film critic - to pick some favorite reads for you.
1. How many reasons for reading a book does the author mention in the passage?
A. One B. Two C. Three D. Four
2. According to this passage, we basically need a ______ in reading.
A. computer B. dictionary C. notebook D. pencil
3.In the author's opinion, reading on the Internet may ________
A. develop long-term reading skills B. improve the general language ability
C. not take the place of reading books D. be an effective way of reading
4. The passage is written mainly to ____________.
A. share the pleasure of reading books B. advise readers to read books
C. stress the importance of reading online. D. help readers to choose good books.

The first day of my school, our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn't know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned round to find an old lady looking up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being. She said, "Hi handsome. My name is Rose. I'm eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?" I laughed and enthusiastically (热情地) responded, "Of course you may", and she gave me a big hug. "Why are you in college at such an age?" I asked. She jokingly replied, "I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, and have a couple of kids..."
"No seriously," I asked. I was curious about what may have motivated (激发) her to be taking on this challenge at her age. "I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one!" she told me.
After class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milkshake. We became instant friend. During the next three months, we would leave class together and talk nonstop (不停顿地) every day. I always liked listening to this "time machine" as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.
Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon (校园图标) and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and showed happiness at the attention upon her from other students. She was living it up.
At the end of the semester, we invited Rose to give a speech at our football banquet (盛宴). I'll never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and stepped up to the stage.

I needed to get some money, so, after Christmas, I took a job in the clothes department at Graham's for the first fortnight of the January sale. I can't say that I enjoyed it, but it was an experience I would never forget.
I could never understand why there were so many things in the sales; where did they all come from? Now I know the secret! Firstly, there is the special winter stock(货物) and the stock that people buy all the year round; some of these things are slightly reduced. Secondly, there are the summer clothes they couldn't sell last year; these are heavily reduced to clear them. Thirdly, there are cheap clothes bought in specially for the sales; these are put out at high prices ten days before the sale begins and then are reduced by 60% in the sale. Clever! Lastly, they buy in "seconds" (clothes not in perfect condition) for the sale and they are sold very cheaply.
When I arrived half an hour before opening on the first day of the sale, there was already a queue around three sides of the building. This made me very nervous.
When the big moment arrived to open the doors, the security guards, looking less comfortable than usual, came up to them, keys in hand. The moment they had unlocked the doors, they hid behind the doors for protection as the noisy crowd charged in. I couldn't believe my eyes; this wasn't shopping, it was a battlefield! One poor lady couldn't keep her feet and was knocked over by people pushing from behind.
Clothes were flying in all directions as people searched for the sizes, colors and styles they wanted. Quarrels broke out. Mothers were using their small children to crawl(爬行) through people's legs and get hold of things they couldn't get near themselves.
Within minutes I had half a dozen people pushing clothes under my nose, each wanting to be the first served. Where had the famous English queue gone? The whole day continued like that, but I kept my temper! I was taking money hand over fist and began to realize why, twice a year, Graham's were happy to turn their expensive store into a battlefield like this.
In the sale fever, people were spending money like water without thinking whether they needed what they were buying. As long as it was a bargain it was OK.
You won't believe this but as soon as I got home, I crashed out for four hours. Then I had dinner and went back to bed again, fearing the sound of the alarm which would tell me to get ready for the second day of the sale.
1.Which of the following statements is true?
A. The customers gave up the queuing, for which the English are famous.
B. The customers kept their temper while looking for the clothes they wanted.
C. Small children enjoyed crawling through people's legs.
D. The security guards were fearless of the crowd.
2.In the author's opinion, why were Graham's happy to make their expensive store into a "battlefield"?
A. There were too many clothes and they wanted to clear them in the sales.
B. They were eager to show that they were clever at doing business.
C. They could take the chance to raise the prices of all their clothes.
D. They wanted to make more money by having sales.
3.In the passage, the expression "crashed out" means _______.
A. chatted with her friends B. slept soundly
C. broke down D. dined out
4.What would be the best title for the passage?
A. The Best Bargain. B. Hunting for a Job.
C. Sale Fever. D. A Pleasant Fortnight.

It’s a great sunny day, so it’s time to get out and enjoy the weather. Many of us would like to, but we have projects due, tasks that need to be done, people that we need to see and money that needs to be made.
What if your company gave you that time off as compensation for the great effort that you gave to the team to finish a project on time? See, when it comes to teamwork, the main focus is for the team to work together. In a ‘‘winning” team there is an equal balance of people who have unique strengths and weaknesses.
Take the example of the Chicago Bulls(芝加哥公牛队) of the 1990s. Michael Jordan was the greatest basketball player to play the game, but did they win a championship every year when Michael had played? No. It took a (D-type) Michael Jordan to lead the team and control the outcome. It took a(n) (I-type) wild and energetic Dennis Rodman to keep the team fun and interesting. It took (S-types) Scottie Pippin, Bill Cartwright, and John Paxson to support the team. And it took the (C-type) analytical mind of Coach Phil Jackson to create a foundation for the players to play on. In the end they, the Chicago Bulls, were able to win six championships within eight years.
What is your team made up of? All Jordans? All Jacksons? All Rodmans? Or all Pippins, Cartwrights and Paxsons? It is you who can choose who’s on your team. Try finding the right people for the right job, and you will have a “winning” team every time!
