This centuries-old town of stone homes could be any rural (农村的) village in Europe. It reached its maximum population at around the turn of the last century, and since then it has slowly emptied until, in 2007, its public school finally shut its doors.
“They say when a town loses its school it loses its soul,”says the governor of St. -Pierre-de-Frugie, Gilbert Chabaud, who was elected to office the following year. After the village’s only restaurant closed too, Gilbert took up his post with a central question, “What can we do to make it come back to life, to make people come here?”
Gilbert, who himself left St. -Pierre-de-Frugie to work in the automobile industry before retiring, found his answer in sustainability (可持续发展). He opened up a store for local producers to sell their vegetables which were grown without using any artificial chemicals. He opened a community (社区) garden and ongoing ecological workshops that encourage knowledge-sharing among the community.
He has a businessman's knowledge: he is making use of the idea shared across the West by many people looking for an alternative to the high-pace urban life. And after the rapid urbanization of the 1950s and 1960s left many villages across Europe abandoned or only partially used, a mini urban-to-rural flow is under way.
Since taking office, 40 new people have moved here — most of them from the cities, bringing the population up to 400. Last year a new school opened in the village. Gilbert is eyeing a bigger place for a new school.
Just a few months ago, lulia Timofticiuc and her partner Guillaume Bled were living in Paris. They were concerned about global environment and at a more micro level about what foods they were consuming and where they were coming from. “We wanted to live lighter, be productive, and be autonomous,” Timofticiuc says. But they didn’t just want to go anywhere. They wanted to go where things were already happening. So they chose St. -Pierre-de-Frugie.

4.Which section of a newspaper is the text probably taken from?

A new hotel is set to open in a faraway village in northern Sweden, which intends to change the simple treehouse into a world—class hotel for travelers who enjoy special designs.
Treehotel, which lies in Harads about 60 km south of the Arctic Circle, will be made up of four rooms when it opens on July 17th:the Cabin, the Blue Cone, the Nest and the Mirrorcube.
Two more are due to open in October—the UFO and A Room With a View.
“Our goal in five years is to have 24 rooms from 24 different architects(建筑师),”says Treehotel co-founder Kent Lindvall, who came up with the idea along with his wife Bfitta.

‘‘Everything will reflect(映照)in this—the trees, the birds, the clouds, the sun, everything. So it should be invisible nearly in the forest.’’
Lindvall says a special film will be put onto the glass which will be seen by birds。
‘‘This is untouched forest and—we want to leave it as it is."says Selberg, another co-founder.
She adds.’’If we’re lucky we might see a bear.I think what’s exciting here is that we’re just 60 km below the Arctic Circle which means there’s a good possibility to have the northern lights in the winter and during the during the summer of course you have the midnight sun.”

Write a winning story!
You could win £1,000 in this year’s Fiction Prize and have your story printed in Keep Writing magazine. Ten other lucky people will win a cheque for £100.
Once again, we need people who can write good stories. The judges, who include Mary Littlejohn, the novelist, Michael Brown, the television reporter, and Susan Hitchins, the editor of Keep Writing, are looking for interesting and original stories. Detective fiction was extremely popular last year, although the competition winner produced a love story. You can write down about whatever you want but here’s some advice to start your thinking:
Write about what you know
This is the advice which every writer should pay attention to and, last year, nearly everyone who wrote for us did exactly that. Love, family, problems with friends ---- these were the main subjects of the stories. However, you need to turn ordinary situations into something interesting that people will want to read about. Make the reader want to continue reading by writing about ordinary things in a new and surprising way.
Get your facts right
It’s no good giving a description of a town or explaining how a jet engine works if you get it wrong. So avoid writing anything unless you’re certain about it.
Hold the reader’s attention
Make the beginning interesting and the ending a surprise. There is nothing worse than a poor ending. Develop the story carefully and try to think of something unusual happening at the end.
Think about the characters
Try to bring the people in your story alive for the reader by using well-chosen words to make them seem real.
Your story must be your own work, between 2,000 and 2,5000 words and typed, double-spaced, on one side only of each sheet of paper.
Even if you’re in danger of missing the closing date, we are unable to accept stories by fax or email. You must include the application form with your story. Unfortunately your story cannot be returned, nor can we discuss our decisions.
You should not have had any fiction printed in any magazine or book in this country ---- a change in the rules by popular request ---- and the story must not have happened in print or in recorded form, for example on radio or TV, anywhere in the world.
Your fee of £5 will go to the Writers’ Association. Make your cheque payable to Keep Writing and send it with the application form and your story to:
Keep Writing
75 Broad Street Birmingham
B12 4TG
The closing date is 30 July and we will inform the winner within one month of this date. Please note that if you win, you must agree to have your story printed in our magazine.
1.How should writers deal with ordinary situations while writing?
A. They should make them appealing to readers.
B. They should copy others’ ideas.
C. They should change some facts to make them interesting.
D. They should describe them as they are.
2.What shouldn’t a writer do?
A. Making the contents interesting.
B. Getting the facts right.
C. Meeting the deadline.
D. Making the end ordinary.
3.Writers should present their works in the following ways except that ____________.
A. they should write originally
B. they can type their stories as they like
C. they should follow some rules
D. they should hand in their stories in time
4.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Late stories can be faxed if necessary.
B. Entry needs no fee.
C. Winners can have their stories printed in other magazines.
D. All stories should be presented by mail

Dangwal was a teacher in Bankholi village from December 2016 till August 21th this year. The school is attended by about 200 children of seven villages. “I had spent nearly three years teaching children in this school and spending time with the villagers. They always considered me as a member of their own family. That is why when I told them that I have been sent to another school, they could not believe it,” said Dangwal.
On learning his leaving, the villagers told him that they would like to organize a “Goodbye” party for him, on which he agreed but placed a condition that “It should be a small one.” However, on the final day I was surprised to see a large number of villagers gathered near the school with drums. As soon as I stepped out of the school, children and women started crying by hugging me while asking me not to go. The love brought tears to my eyes as well,” Dangwal said.
Remembering his early days in the school, Dangwal said it was not easy for him to adjust but gradually he managed it. “In the six months, I faced some problems as the culture and language of the villagers in the area was different from mine. I learnt it, which helped me to get along with the children and villagers,” Dangwal recalled.
“He was not just a teacher of our children but one of us. He always stood with every villager in the hour of need. His leaving the school is a big loss for us,” one of the villagers, Mamta Rawat, said while praising Dangwal.
He was one of the few teachers who decided to live in the village where the school was located while most of the teachers would live at more comfortable places away from the village. This really touched us,” said another villager Harish Uniyal. “He would always be in our hearts,” Uniyal further added.
1.What is Dangwal’s requirement about the “Goodbye” party?
A.Villagers should gather near the school. B.Only a few people should be involved.
C.Drums should be brought there. D.Students shouldn’t cry.
2.What difficulty did Dangwal meet with at first?
A.He found it hard to get along with his students. B.The food there didn’t agree with him.
C.He had to teach about 200 students. D.He couldn’t understand the local language.
3.What does the underlined word “This” in the last paragraph refer to?
A.Dangwal was ready to help others.
B.Dangwal couldn’t hold back tears saying “goodbye”.
C.Dangwal didn’t mind the uncomfortable living conditions.
D.Dangwal made friends with the villagers.
4.What’s the text mainly about?

C.Dangwal feels culture shock in Bankholi village.
D.Another school welcomes Dangwal.
