When we look at the sky and see a bright light moving quickly across it or coming towards the earth, we talk about seeing a “shooting star” or a “falling star”. These moving lights are not, in fact, stars at all. They are small pieces of matter from outer space, which burn up as they enter the Earth’s atmosphere. The correct name of them is meteoroids. Any pieces that make it to the Earth’s surface without completely burning up are known as meteorites. A meteor is actually the name given to the light we see when a meteoroid is burning up.
When a meteorite hits the Earth at speeds between 11 and 72 kilometers a second, it can do amazing damage. A very large meteorite could knock the earth out of its orbit. If this happened, all life on Earth would probably become extinct(灭绝). The path we follow around the Sun would change and as a result the Earth would become either much hotter or much colder. This change in temperature would affect sea levels and the amount of water in rivers. There would either be huge floods, which would cover most of the land with water, or the oceans would dry up and there would be a drought, which means a long period of time without rain. Either way, nothing could survive. If a large meteorite landed in the sea it would almost certainly cause tsunamis, which would race towards the land, destroying everything in their paths.
Although it is unlikely the Earth will be struck by a meteorite large enough to do that kind of damage, there is evidence of fairly large meteorites hitting the Earth in the past. In 1908 a large area of forest in Tunguska, Siberia was destroyed by a meteorite that came apart just before it hit the ground. The moon, however, has about three billion craters陨石坑caused by meteorites impacting影响 its surface. The reason more meteorites have reached the surface of the moon than the surface of the Earth is that the moon does not have enough atmosphere for the meteorites to burn up in. some of the meteorites that have reached the Earth’s surface have done considerable damage. Some scientists believe it was a change of climate caused by meteorites hitting the Earth that resulted in the extinction of the dinosaurs and other large prehistoric animals.
Scientists are especially interested in meteorites because they contain information about the solar system. It is widely believed by scientists that most meteorites are produced by collisions(碰撞) between asteroids (small planets). These collisions probably happened many billions of years ago. This means the physical and chemical structure of a meteorite can give scientists information about the early days of the universe.
1.The story is about ___.
A.floods caused by meteors |
B.matter from outer space |
C.life on Earth millions of years ago |
D.meteorites that have damaged the moon |
2.The Earth has ___.
A.three billion craters |
B.fewer craters than the moon |
C.more craters than the moon |
D.a thinner atmosphere than the moon |
3.Some scientists believe the dinosaurs became extinct because ___.
A.they were hit by meteors |
B.meteorites landed on their nests |
C.meteorites landed and changed the climate |
D.they could no longer breathe the atmosphere |
4.Meteors are ___.
A.small planets |
B.the same as asteroids |
C.from broken parts of asteroids |
D.the light we see when meteoroids hit our atmosphere |

What do you know about the sea? You may have seen it. Some of us have swum or bathed in it. It looks beautiful on a fine sunny day and it can be very rough when there is a strong wind. What other things do we know about it? Of course, the sea is very large. In the world there is more sea than land. The sea covers three quarters of the earth. The sea is also very deep in some places. It is not deep everywhere, some parts of it are very great. At one spot, near Japan the sea is nearly 11 kilometers deep! Just think of it, the highest mountain in the world is only about 9 kilometers high! If you have swum in the sea, you know that the water is salty. Rivers carry salt from the land into the sea. Some parts of the sea are more salty than other parts. Do you know the Dead Sea in Arabia? It is very salty. Swimmers cannot sink in it! Fish cannot live in the Dead Sea. It is a strange sea. In most parts of the sea, there are a lot of fishes and plants. Some live near the top of the sea. Others live deep down. No sunlight can reach the depth of the sea. So it is completely dark. Strange fishes live there. Some are blind. Some have their own lights. Some have great jaws. With their great jaws, they swallow fish larger than themselves. The sea can be very cold. Deep sea divers know this well. At the top of the water may be warm. Then as the divers go down, the sea becomes colder and colder.
Many scientists are now making a study of animal and plant life in the sea. They hope to find new resources for mankind.
1.. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. Land covers one fourth of the area of the earth.
B. The depths of the sea are different in different places.
C. The depth of a sea at one spot near Japan is nearly the height of the highest mountain.
D. The salt in the sea mainly comes from the land.
2... The Dead Sea is lifeless because ___.
A. the water in it is too cold B. the water in it is too salty for anything to grow
C. the water in it never flows D. no sunlight can reach the bottom of the lake
3.. We can see the underlined word “rough” in this passage means ___.
A. ugly B. noisy C. cold D. not calm
4... Which of the following statements is true?
A. Some of the fish living in the depth of the sea can not see by themselves.
B. Some fish give out light for themselves.
C. Some fish live on other fish. D. All of the above
5... What does the writer intend to tell us in the last paragraph?
A. The necessity of the study of the sea. B. The purpose of man’s further study of the sea.
C. Man’s limited knowledge of the sea. D. The importance of new resources for man.

It is probably the strangest sport anyone has ever invented. And at first sight, it looks like the easiest. Competitors have to do two things. The first is to stand still. The second is to place their hands anywhere on the body of a car, and keep it there.
This is where things start getting difficult. Lots of people are doing the same thing. And the winner of the “handathon” contest is the person who can carry on doing it for the longest time. That person gets to own the car.
It still seems to be an easy thing to do. At the beginning it is. Anyone can stand still. But when the contest has been going for four or five days, standing still seems like the most difficult job in the world. And keeping the hand in place over this time becomes an act of serious attention. After a few days, the hand seems to belong to someone else—someone who wants to go home and get some sleep.
Competitors are allowed to take a five-minute break every hour to eat, drink or do whatever else is necessary. No one is allowed to lean on the car for support. Winners need to be able to show great powers of attention. They also need to be able to develop special skills.
Maybe the popularity of the handathon is due to the fact that it is not necessary to be a trained athlete to enter. Entrants in the Longview handathon certainly don't seem to do much preparation. Most say they will prepare by “getting lots of sleep”. Others say they will “eat healthy food” or “pray for success”. The whole event gives ordinary people the chance to do something interesting and win something in the end.
Handathons are competitions, but there is little rivalry(敌对)between competitors. They help each other out and keep each other's spirits up. People who drop out early return with food, drink and encouragement.
1.The reason why the sport is called “handathon” is that competitors ________.
A. cover a long distance B. keep hands in place for long
C. wave hands as long as possible D. do the same thing as in a marathon
2.What ability is likely to be needed most in a handathon?
A. Standing without any support. B. Not leaning on the car.
C. Eating and drinking in five minutes. D. Having strong powers of attention.
3.What is the writer’s opinion about handathon?
A. It is not as easy as it looks at first.
B. It is the easiest of all sports.
C. It can purify people’s spirits.
D. It is not good competing in a handathon.
4.Which of the following about handathon is not right?
A. The person who takes part in it should stand still.
B. The person who takes part in it has to place his hands anywhere on the body of a car, and keep it there.
C. The person who takes part in it can have a break during the course of the competition.
D. Handathons are competitions where competitors seldom encourage each other.
