History is full of cases where dreams have been a pathway to creativity and discovery.A striking example is provided by Dr.Otto Loewi,a pharmacologist and winner of a Nobel Prize.Loewi had spent years studying the chemical transmission of nerve impulses (脉搏).A tremendous breakthrough in his research came when he dreamed of an experiment three nights in a row.The first two nights he woke up and wrote down the experiment quickly and untidily on paper. But the next morning,he couldn't tell what the notes meant. On the third night,he got up after having the dream. This time, instead of making notes he went straight to his laboratory and performed the crucial experiment.Loewi later said that if the experiment had occurred to him while awake he would have rejected it.
Loewi's experiment gives some insight into using dreams to produce creative solutions.Inhibitions (拘谨) are reduced during dreaming, which may be especially useful in solving problems that require a fresh point of view.
Being able to take advantage of dreams for problem solving is improved if you “set” yourself before retiring. Before you go to bed,try to think intently about a problem you wish to solve.Bury yourself in the problem by stating it clearly and reviewing all relevant information. Then use the suggestions listed in the previous section to catch your dreams.Although this method is not guaranteed to produce a novel solution or a new insight,it is certain to be an adventure.About half of a group of college students using the method for a week recalled a dream that helped them solve a personal problem.
1.The main idea of this passage is that ________.
A.very little is really known about the meaning of dreams
B.it is possible to “catch” one's dreams by planning before going to sleep
C.dreams can be useful in producing creative solutions to one's problems
D.Loewi's experiment helped in the study of transmision of nerve impulses
2.The first paragraph is mainly organized by ________.
A.classifying types of experiments
B.summarizing the work of one researcher
C.comparing and exploring historical cases
D.telling in time order about one man's research
3.If Loewi had thought of the experiment while awake,he would have ________.
A.asked someone else to do it
B.thought it was a bad idea
C.tried it out on his own
D.thought it was a wise idea
4.The author probably thinks that ________.
A.Loewi should not have conducted his experiment
B.dreaming is of very little value to most people
C.inhibitions may stop someone thinking of useful ideas
D.college students should not try out dream experiments

Life can be so wonderful, full of adventure and joy. It can also be full of challenges, setbacks and heartbreaks. Whatever our circumstances, we generally still have dreams, hopes and desires —that little something more we want for ourselves and our loved ones. Yet knowing we can have more can also create a problem, because when we go to change the way we do things, up come the old patterns and pitfalls that stopped us from seeking what we wanted in the first place.
This tension between what we feel we can have and "what were seemingly able to have is the niggling suffering, the anxiety we feel. This is where we usually think it's easier to just give up. But we're never meant to let go of the part of us that knows we can have more. The intelligence behind that knowing is us—the real us. It's the part that believes in life and its possibilities. If you drop that, you begin to feel a little "dead" inside because you're dropping "you".
So, if we have this capability but somehow life seems to keep us stuck, how do we break these patterns?
Decide on a new course and make one decision at a time. This is good advice for a new adventure or just getting through today's challenges.
While, deep down, we know we can do it, our mind—or the minds of those close to us—usually says we can't.
That isn't a reason to stop, it's just the mind, that little man or woman on your shoulder, trying to talk you out of something again. It has done it many times before. It's all about starting simple and doing it now.
Decide and act before over-thinking. When you do this you may feel a little, or large, release from the jail of your mind and you'll be on your way.
1.According to the passage, life is always .
A. full of joy B. full of challenges
C. so wonderful D. changing
2.It can be inferred from the first two paragraphs that we should ___________ .

B. be careful when we choose to change
C. stick to our dreams under any circumstances
D. be content with what we already have
3.What is the key to breaking the old patterns?
A. To focus on every detail.
B. To decide and take immediate action.
C. To listen to those close to us.
D. To think twice before we act.
4.Which of the following best explains the underlined part in the last paragraph?
A. Escape from your punishment.
B. Realization of your dreams.
C. Freedom from your tension.
D. Reduction of your expectations.
5.What does the author intend to tell us?
A. It's easier than we think to get what we want.
B. It's important to learn to accept sufferings in life.
C. It's impractical to change our way of thinking.
D. It's harder than we expect to follow a new course.

Travelling doesn’t always have to be about changing your location. Reading books also takes you on real-life adventures around the world, even from our armchairs. Here we feature 4 adventure tales that we can dive into.
Land of the Dawn-Lit Mountains, by Antonia Bolingbroke-Kent.
Despite suffering from panic disorder, the brave Bolingbroke-Kent sets off on an adventure across a lesser-known part of India, Arunachal Pradesh. There is plenty of humor thrown in, along with the highs and lows of her journey, so it’s not just all serious.
Walk in the Woods, by Bill Bryson.
“A little voice in my head said: Sounds neat! Let’s do it!” writes Bryson of his more humorous than heroic journey from Maine to Georgia along the Appalachian Trail. Bryson’s tale may be the funniest call for conservation ever written.
Brazilian Adventure, by Peter Fleming.
Peter Fleming signed on to a risky 3,000-mile Brazilian jungle hunt to uncover the fate of a lost English explorer. Imagine a book: Funny, exciting, literate, a period piece that still works.
A Book of Migrations, by Rebecca Solnit.
It’s a search for roots in Ireland. Her long hike in western Ireland leads to a reflection on movement-cultural, psychological, personal. There is much to learn by getting away from the tourist route, walking and speaking to the people you meet along the way. They have stories to tell that you won’t find in the tourist guides.
