Life is full of challenges. Some people seem to meet every challenge with confidence, while others struggle to overcome them. Here are some ways to better meet your personal challenges, whatever they may be.
Do not undervalue the power of being present. If you make a practice of facing your challenges - even in failure - with full presence and awareness, 1.. You can ask yourself questions that help you better understand the problem.
2.. Others can help you arrive at your own understanding, but no one ever solves your problems for you. Even in circumstances where someone else is acting as a partner, only you can decide for yourself how you will process the situation. The longer you spend searching for guidance outside of yourself, the longer you spend ignoring the problem. Assess the situation, your resources, and your abilities, and then act. 3..
It is important to know yourself. There is a reason why certain challenges seem hard for you while easy for others. 4.. It's all about consciousness. Those who face challenging tasks have found a way to avoid seeing those activities as challenges.
Challenges are opportunities to grow. That growth takes place out of potentiality, your potentiality, which is tremendous and highly active in every moment of life. Come to know yourself as that. Challenges can guide you to awareness.
Pay little attention to the outcome. 5.. Once you focus on what you're actually doing, instead of the result, the most upsetting part starts to disappear.
A.Look to yourself for the solution
B.Don't trouble yourself with questions
C.It's not because they are better than you
D.you may have a sense of being stuck anywhere
E.you will find most challenges are not challenges at all
F.The sooner you take up the challenge, the quicker it stops being a problem
G.Worrying about the potential outcome is often what turns a hill into a mountain

Do you sometimes find yourself drawing random patterns(图案)during meetings and lectures? Some people believe it shows you aren’t listening or paying attention. However, there are studies which claim the opposite, and that doodling might actually be beneficial.
Doodling seems to be popular. In the past, it was seen as a mindless activity and a product of the absentminded. However, in 2016, an article on the Harvard University website discussed the idea that random drawings may assist memory retention(保持)and concentration.
The article stresses that 26 of 44 American presidents were known to doodle, with Ronald Reagan famous for drawing cowboys. A 2009 study conducted by psychologist Jackie Andrade asked 40 people to listen to a “dull and boring” voice message. Half of the group were asked to doodle and shade in a picture. Those who did were able to recall 29% more of the information contained in the message.
Some experts believe that willingly accepting your creative and artistic sides during meetings may engage your mind. Jesse Prinz, a famous professor of philosophy, actively encourages his students to doodle. He believes that doodling is the “attentional sweet spot”.
And it might not just be good for your concentration. An artist known as Mr Doodle has made a career out of his scribbles(乱涂乱画).He sells his art online and also goes to people’s homes to decorate their walls.
It seems that random drawing to aid concentration might be becoming more of a thing. People like Sunni Brown, an advocate for doodling, teach adults how to sketch and scribble in the workplace. So, the next time you see someone randomly drawing pictures during a meeting, it might be a sign that they are listening more than you think.
1.Which phrase has the same meaning as doodling?
A.A product of the absentminded.
B.Random drawing.
C.Scribbles in the workplace.
D.Drawing on the walls.
2.The author refers to Ronald Reagan in order to ________.
A.inform readers of Reagan’s ability
B.provide some background information
C.introduce a new topic for further discussion
D.give an example of the advantages of doodling
3.Why does Jesse Prinz think that doodling is the “attentional sweet spot”?
A.He thinks that it draws more attention.
B.He thinks that it promises a good career.
C.He believes that it helps to engage the mind.
D.He believes that it can bring economic benefits.
4.What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A.To state the benefits that you can get from random drawing.
B.To provide guidance on leading a random drawing life.
C.To stress the need of distraction at work and in our life.
D.To suggest a way of pursuing concentration in our lifelong career.

Living gratefully has a huge transforming power, not just when something wonderful or special happens, but every day no matter what is happening.
I've recently been involved with two people whose lives were challenged by bad luck.I have seen how grateful living had the power to keep one of them going and how it's beginning to lift the other. One was a friend and the other is my sister.
My friend seemed to be in good health when she received a deadly diagnosis(诊断):a disease with no effective treatment. She had all the emotions that a tragedy(悲剧)brings, but she also had a powerful response to despair that gave her"the happiness that doesn't depend on what happens."She wrote online daily, honestly sharing the details of her situation.
She wrote that even though it was difficult to move, this gave her more time to notice small things.
She was grateful not only for the love and help of family and friends, but also for time to see the sun rise and watch the birds in her yard.No opportunity for gratefulness was wasted.
She taught that gratefulness is not a false cheerfulness. It's taking every opportunity to celebrate the blessings of small things. We can be grateful for the challenges that help us develop compassion(同情)for each other.Life is a precious gift.
She repeatedly blogged(写博客)that she was happier than she had ever been.
When she wrote about"the worst day",she ended with"life is still a lovely gift."She died later that day.
Her message, however, changed my sister's life.My sister's health was getting worse and worse, though nothing life-threatening.She did have a very painful knee. Her life was in danger from her defeated spirit. She was bedbound(卧床不起),getting weaker and weaker.Fearful, angry and depressed, she felt out of options for recovery.
I read my sister a few of my friend's messages.I was careful not to say,"Why can't you be more like her?"Instead,I let the words do their work.I'm grateful to say that an attitude of gratitude began to replace her anger and fear.I believe this helped her to heal.
We can't be grateful for all that happens, but we can practice gratefulness for all that happens, but we can practice gratefulness for life itself, for all we can learn to deal with, for all the ways we can help each other grow and heal.
1.How did the author's sister feel when she was ill?

Exercise is an important part of staying healthy. Studies show that it can help strengthen the body’s natural defenses against disease. But exercise does not just keep us healthy. For many people, it is part of their daily routine, making them feel better about themselves. Getting enough exercise at difficult times, such as the current coronavirus pandemic (新冠疫情), is important.
However, due to the bans on close contact between individuals, gyms and exercise studios are not open. In areas with stay-at-home orders, exercising outside may not be as simple as usual. So, people are changing the way they exercise during this pandemic.
Beth Berglin is the director of a gallery in Miami, Florida. Before the pandemic, her exercise routine involved going to camp-style classes four mornings a week. Now, the area where she trains is closed. But she is staying active through online classes. “Part of the reason we exercise is to have that mental break,” she said. “I can’t imagine getting through this without having some form of physical activity.”
Fitness companies are changing to meet the new environment. Some are helping people stay active by offering online classes, some of which are free or have reduced cost. Some are offering longer trial periods for at-home workouts. During a trial period, people can try a product or service for free. Some have completely moved their training programs online. Many of these online exercise classes are made for smaller spaces and do not require any special equipment.
Fitness companies that have been using an online model seem better prepared than others. They are using the pandemic to expand their fitness offerings and appeal to new customers. Some of those new customers include children who are now learning at home during the pandemic. Founders of one online exercise company, named Obe, said that they received requests for children’s classes from parents. So, they launched four 10-minute dance and strength workouts for children 10 years old and younger.
1.What does the word “this” in paragraph 3 probably refer to?
A.The unexpected loneliness. B.The daily exercise routine.
C.The great loss of business. D.The lasting health catastrophe.
2.According to the author, online fitness courses ______ .
A.call for less demanding places but more costs
B.face some challenges in developing new learning models
C.attract more customers by meeting their individual needs
D.are more popular compared with the usual way of exercise
3.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Those who keep exercising have no risk of infection.
B.Regular exercise is an effective way to keep mental health.
C.Obe’s founders are optimistic about the future of their company.
D.The widespread pandemic forces people to break the exercise routine.

For as long as they can remember, Jynne Martin and April Surgent had both dreamed of going to Antarctica. This winter, they each made it to the icy continent as guests of the National Science Foundation (NSF). But they didn't, as scientists. Martin is a poet and Surgent is an artist. They went to Antarctica as participants in the NSF's Artists and Writers Program, which makes it possible for artists, including filmmakers and musicians, to experience Antarctica and contribute their own points of view to our understanding of the continent.
“It's important for scientists and artists to work together,” says Surgent, who spent six weeks at Palmer Station, the smallest of the U.S. research bases. “You need a lot of different ways and points of view to explain the world.”
Martin followed four scientific teams on the ice and wrote articles and poems inspired by her experience. “Each day was the new ‘best day of my life’.” said Martin, who said she also loved spending time in the library at the McMurdo Station reading the journals of early explorers.
Today's scientists write articles for scientific journals. Unlike the early explorer's journals, scientific papers can now be very difficult for non-scientists to understand. Writers in Antarctica work to explain the research to the public. Peter Rejcek is editor, writer, and photographer for the Antarctic Sun, an online magazine devoted to news about the U.S. Antarctic Program. He goes to the South Pole every year, interviewing the scientists about their research.
Antarctica is full of stories and wonders that are scientific, historical, and personal. People such as Martin, Surgent, and Rejcek are making an effort to bring those stories to as many people as they can.
“Some people are going to be scientists, some people are going to be artists, some people are going to be journalists, but we can all work together,” says Surgent, "to celebrate this extraordinary place.”
1.What is the main purpose of the NSF's Artists and Writers Program?
A.To increase people's understanding of Antarctica.
B.To develop a relationship between scientists and artists.
C.To encourage artists and writers to learn science.
D.To make the scientists in Antarctica known to the public.
2.Which of the following best explains why scientists and artists work together?
A.The world is full of different people. B.The world should move in harmony.
C.The world is full of different opinions. D.The world should be seen in different ways.

How to Live Well
At a certain point in life, thoughts may come up. How well have you lived?1.How well have you treated those you love and care about? Most of all, however, time seems to slip on without too much self-reflection. Maybe it’s time to slow down and think about what it means to live well.
To live means acting.2.You start action, come up with goals, make plans to help work on the desired outcome, and dive in. Not every action will immediately bring about a successful finish of the project, task or undertaking, but you learn from everything you do.
3.Being busy is an effective cure to loneliness, helps avoid depression and self-pity, and keeps us in a constant state of movement. Again, doing things often puts us in contact with others and that’s also a good thing for humans to make interaction with other humans.
But what happens when you don’t give a project or task your full effort? Are you still living well? Or are you shortchanging yourself, trying to cheat and still get the reward?4.Not only learn to face these, but also try to overcome them.
The truth is that everyone cuts corners now and then. Maybe it is because we lack time, energy, financial or other resources. Sometimes we have to make ends meet by shaving off an item or a step. That doesn’t mean we make a habit of it.5.
A.To live means you participate in life.
B.To have a good life doesn’t mean living well.
C.Keeping busy sometimes is important in life.
D.Sometimes you have to face these in your life.
E.How much have you achieved relative to your goals?
