Do you listen to the songs that your parents like? Chance are that you don’t. You probably think the music that they like is old and dull and that the Songs on your playlist are much cooler.
But here is what scientists found recently: people’s music tastes change as they age, according to a study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. So it’s likely that your own musical preference will follow a similar path to your parents’ whether you like it or not.
We used to think that culture and personality arc the only factors that affect one’s music choice. But researchers at the University of Cambridge, UK, gathered data from more than 250,000 people over the past 10 years. They noticed that as people age, their social circumstances change, and so does their music taste.
There are three musical periods that people pass through as they mature-intense”, “contemporary” and “sophisticated”.
The first period comes in the teenagers years, during which time people like intense music such as punk and rock because teenagers tend to be aggressive and want to establish their identity as independent individuals.
But as people move into early adulthood, their lifestyle changes—they socialize more and want to build close relationships with others. As a result, they become more fond of contemporary music, such as pop and R&B, which is usually uplifting and danceable and played at parties where people hang out together and chat.
When middle age comes, things have settled down for most people. This period will be dominated (支配) by more “sophisticated” music, such as jazz and classical, as well as more catchy music like country, folk, and blues.
“For many, this life stage is frequently exhausted by work and family, and there is a requirement for relaxing, emotive (动情的) music,” Jason Rentfrow, a researcher member, told The telegraph.
But you must be thinking: “Aren’t there old people who are still into rock music?” Of course there are. But Rentfrow explained that their reasons for listening to rock music may have changed. “We use music for different reasons,” he said, and thus at that age people may listen to remind themselves of their youths.

If you've started thinking about your career(职业), you'll probably have noticed that there are certain jobs you're just not supposed to do if you're a girl. However, a lot is happening today to get women into male—dominated(男性主导的)areas of work. This International Women's Day, we look at three areas of work where things are tough for women right now-but where change is happening.
Science and research
The situation today
Have you heard of STEM? STEM means science, technology, engineering and maths. It covers a whole range of jobs, from scientists who research cures for diseases, to engineers who design things like buildings, roads and bridges. These jobs are highly skilled. But of every eight people in a STEM job, only one is a woman.
Why we need more women in science
The lack of women in STEM jobs is becoming a national problem. The government is worried there simply won't be enough scientists and engineers in the future. This could affect the whole economy because, as a country, we can sell our technology and skills to other countries. STEM jobs also create more work further down the line, such as for construction workers who build roads and bridge.
The police
The situation today
In March 2015, the percentage of female police officers stood at 28%. This compares with 22% nine years earlier in 2006. And the percentage has not always risen over this period. In fact, it peaked(顶峰)in 2010 before falling, before flatlining over the next three years.
Why we need more women in the police force
The police are there for the whole community and that includes women! Because crime is often to do with sex, or violence by men against women, a woman police officer might be more understanding or more approachable. Studies also suggest that women tend to trust other women more than men. Women can also be more understanding. Often, when a person comes forward to report an incident, such as a problem at home or with neighbours, women are often better at listening and at understanding other people's problems, while men are more likely to be dismissive.
1.What do we learn about women in Paragraph 1?
A.They are hard to find jobs. B.They have a wider choice of jobs.
C.They change jobs at times. D.They act better in doing man's jobs.
2.What could be the consequence of the lack of women in science?
A.It creates more jobs.
B.It leads to national chaos.
C.It influences the economic development.
D.It brings about the technological revolution.
3.What can be inferred from the studies on female police?
A.Male police are not so trustworthy as female police.
B.Female police hardly care about common incidents.
C.Female police officers are easier to communicate with.
D.The percentage of female police is always on the increase.
4.What is most likely to be discussed following the last paragraph?
A.Occupation guidance. B.Women's advantages.
C.Man-dominated careers. D.Another area of work.

Main people believe that the only way to make our communities safer is to build more prisons. But there's a way to better protect cities and towns by doing just the opposite.
In many countries throughout the world, prison populations have risen dramatically over the past decade. One of the main reasons for this is the large number of repeat offenders, that is people who break the law again are once freed from jail. Statistics show that about one in four prisoners freed every year return to jail within three years.
This is partly because ex-prisoners face huge difficulty finding employment. More than a third of them cannot find any job at all. Data show that having a job greatly reduces the chances that a person will commit a crime again or commit one in the first place. Released prisoners who do manage to find steady employment are 50 percent less likely to return to prison. Rather than harming a community, having a job helps ex-prisoners to change their ways and make a positive and productive contribution to their communities.
What's more, helping these men and women find jobs would also save taxpayers a lot of money. Few prisoners would save governments millions or possibly even billions of dollars annually: the costs of building and operating jails.
There are many things that the government can do to help ex-prisoners find work. More job training programs should be introduced to provide prisoners with work skills before they are freed. Companies and factories should also be given tax benefits if they employ ex-prisoners. Such programs have been shown to work in several countries.
Such policies of course assure that freed criminals actually want to work. But shouldn't they be given the chance? Our goal, after all, shouldn’t be to incarcerate as many prisoners as possible, but to build a society that doesn't need to put such a large percentage of its population in jail. We should take a step in that direction and help prisoners find self-respect and purpose through work.
1.What percentage of freed prisoners returns to prison within three years?
A. 65%. B. 50%.
C. 33%. D. 25%.
2.Which of the following best describes the content of the fifth paragraph?
A. Facts. B. Arguments.
C. Recommendations. D. Requirements.
3.What does the underlined word "incarcerate" in the last paragraph mean?
A. set free B. lock up
C. employ D. separate
4.Which of the following would the author agree with?
A. Tougher punishment will reduce crime.
B. Most prisoners do not deserve to be in prison.
C. Economic conditions are a major cause of crime.
D. Prison populations are likely to increase in the future.

When you finish your day at school, you probably rush to your dormitory or home as quickly as possible. But for some people, their day begins in the middle of the night.
Welcome to the interesting world of “the Master”, the owner of a small restaurant located in a busy district that only opens from midnight to 7 am.
Earlier this month, Hong Kong actor Tony Leung Ka-fai announced that he had directed and starred as the Master in a remake of Japanese director Joji Matsuoka’s famous comedy Midnight Diner. The new movie is expected to come out in Chinese mainland cinemas later this year.
While serving regular soup every night, the Master is also willing to make customized (定制的) dishes if his customers ask. Besides its delicious food, what makes this eatery special is that it’s a place of sanctuary and togetherness.
Midnight is often when worries, loneliness, and sadness creep up on people, and midnight diner provides the simple comforts of food and drink, and more importantly, a warm place where people can keep each other company, talk, and share their stories. The customers’ stories cover everything, from problems at work to parenthood, romance, friendship, and the regrets of a wasted life. Listening to their stories, customers offer encouragement and advice to one another. But the Master only provides the life lesson-- a good day must follow a bad one-when necessary.

After all, no one is flawless and no one’s life is perfect, but imperfections are the space where possibilities live. As Kelly Mcneils, author of Your Messy Brilliance, wrote, “ The good, the bad, and the ugly, they are our greatest assets because they include every single part of ourselves and leave nothing out--and when we fully embrace all parts of ourselves, we discover our true power.”

The music of your teenage years probably will stay with you for the rest of your life.I think music is deeply connected with memory because of the emotions it awakens.Music also helps to mark time because of the way the fashions and stars of pop culture come and go.I often connect some summers with particular records (唱片 ) that came out while I was on holiday. But what's really the best way to record your youth? Is it your favorite song, or a picture of the singer?
In my teenage years, one of the special things about Britain was the huge amount of information about music. There were 3 weekly newspapers about music:Sounds, Melody Maker and the New Musical Express.Buying records was expensive and it also meant making a choice. So it was wise to read about music instead, and in some ways, it was actually better as well.It was possible for a group to get onto the front cover of one of the music papers without even having made any records—but they needed things to say for the reporters to write about. In fact, the best pop stars of the 1980s were people whose main talent was exactly that. They weren' t great musicians or singers and they weren't especially goodlooking, but they had some unusual acts or habits and a nice way with clever phrases. They were ideal for filling music papers.
When The Face magazine first came out in May, 1980, it was meant to be a rock magazine.I have given away or sold all the records I bought as a teenager, but I think my old copies of The Face will stay with me for ever.Although it started out as a source of information about music, the writers quickly realized that it wasn't really the music that was important—it was the way people spoke and acted, and, above all, the way they looked.
1.According to the author,music can NOT ________.
A.improve memory B.awaken emotions
C.mark time D.stay in the mind

A.people had few chances to buy records
B.it was hard to judge whether records were good or not
C.it was not an easy thing for teenagers to get records
D.the choice of buying records only depended on newspapers

B.people's talent was not what reporters needed to write about
C.reporters wrote about the talents of pop stars
D.people read about music
