On an afternoon in 2014 in Denmark, Decan Andersen saw a baby red squirrel fall from his apartment building and land in the middle of his garden, injured and bleeding. Although concerned, Andersen left the squirrel alone and went inside, thinking that the mother would come and rescue him.

Later, after a veterinarian (兽医) had dressed the squirrel’s wounds, Andersen made his new housemate some tiny sweaters and socks to prevent him from scratching his wounds.

Then Tintin---named after the movie his children were watching, “The Adventure of Tintin”---got so used to his cozy home life during his convalescence that the family soon realized they couldn’t release him back into the wild, especially since he now had no fear of cats! Feeding him kitten milk from a bottle until Tintin grew strong enough to crack nuts on his own, Andersen received special permission from Danish Wildlife Preservation officials to keep the red squirrel, since they are considered endangered in Denmark and several other countries.

Using a little harness(甲胄) and leash(安全绳) to protect Tintin from the dogs, eagles and cats that weren’t as tolerant of squirrels as Coco, Andersen began taking his little pet everywhere he went, documenting their adventures on Facebook and Instagram, where they now have almost 40, 0000 followers.

“With so much negativity in the world, I thought it could help lift people up,” Andersen said. “Most people who meet us feel amazed and want to know more. He makes people forget about their troubles for a moment so they can laugh and smile. He’s certainly brought light and enjoyment to me and my family. We have a special bond and are pretty much together, 24/7. ”

Hans Christian Andersen was a poor boy who lived in Denmark. His father, a shoemaker, had died, and his mother had married again.

Andersen’s father liked to read better than to make shoes. In the evenings, he had read aloud from The Arabian Nights. His wife understood very little of the book, but the boy, pretending to sleep, understood every word.

Years later, her son, in his pity for her and his anger at the world, wrote the angry story She’s No Good and the famous tale The Little Match Girl.

Through his genius, he changed every early experience, even his father’s death, into a fairy tale. One cold day his father showed him a white, woman-like figure among the frost patterns. “That is the snow queen,” said the shoemaker. “Soon she will be coming for me.” A few months later he died. And years later, Andersen turned that sad experience into a fairy tale, The Snow Queen.

A UK college has started teaching students the Danish concept of hygge — said to make homes nicer and people happier. But what exactly is it?

Sitting by the fire on a cold night, while petting a dog — probably surrounded by candles. That’ s certainly “hygge”. Eating home-made cakes. Watching TV under a warm quilt. Tea served in a china set. Family get-togethers at Christmas. They’re all hygge too.

Morley College, in central London, is teaching students how to achieve hygge as part of its Danish language course. “We have long, cold winters in Denmark,” says lecturer Susanne Nilsson. “That influences things. With up to 17 hours of darkness per day in winter, and average temperatures staying around 0℃, people spend more time indoors as a result, says Nilsson, meaning there’s greater focus on home entertaining.

The idea is to feel as at-home as possible, forgetting life’s worries. “Hygge works best when there’s not too large an empty space around the person or people,” Nilsson adds.

The recent growth in Scandinavian-themed restaurants, cafes and bars in the UK is helping to export hygge, Nilsson says. Most customers won’t have heard of the term, but they might get a sense of it.

Similarly, in the US, the wallpaper and fabric firm Hygge & West aims to channel the concept through its cheery designs, as does a Los Angeles bakery, called Hygge, which sells traditional Danish cakes and treats.

Hygge is a deep-rooted tradition in Danes’ life. Helen Russell, author of The Year of Living Danishly: Uncovering the Secrets of the World ’ s Happiest Country, says, “Hygge is so important for those who live Danishly that the other day, I saw a camper car parked by the roadside with lit candles in the windows.”

His friends were the people that paid for his work and not people he was particularly close to. “Just living is not enough…One must have sunshine, freedom, and a little flower,’’ he said.
