Girl's Night Out: Foot Golf!

Grab some friends and join us on Saturday, June 4, for a fun night out at Lake of the Woods Golf Course in Mahomet, thanks to our friends at the Champaign County Forest Preserve District. There will be giveaways, some adult drinks and food, as well as a great night out playing Foot Golf. Yes, we said Foot Golf .You don' t need to have a bag full of club(球杆)or fancy spike(钉鞋)--- just bring yourself (and athletic shoes, please).

If you can kick a soccer ball, you can play Foot Golf. If you can laugh and have fun, you can also play Foot Golf.

So what is Foot Golf? Foot Golf is what happens when you combine golf and soccer. Players kick off from a tee box (开球处) and attempt to get their soccer ball into a 21-inch diameter(直径) cup using the fewest number of kicks. Foot Golf can be played by children and adults. It is a trend sweeping golf courses across the country, and we are lucky to have it right here in Champaign County.

My biggest mistake was treating running like soccer practice: If I wasn’t exhausted by the end of practice, I felt as though I didn’t work hard enough. I run all of my runs at 80 percent effort, or the equivalent of what I now call tempo runs (节奏跑). I wasn’t warming up to the pace or cooling down effectively.

I decided to go out for a run during the hottest part of the day. At the time, I told myself that it would be refreshing to sweat a little, but I didn’t bring adequate water. I returned feeling completely rundown, dehydrated (脱水的), and exhausted. If you must go out on a run during unfavorable weather, wear proper suits and bring enough water to keep you feeling strong.

Nick Vujicic was born with no arms or legs, but the brave 32­year­old man plays football and golf, swims, and surfs. Nick has a small foot on his left side, which helps him balance and enables him to kick. He uses his one foot to type, write with a pen and pick things up between his toes.

“I call it my chicken drumstick(畸形的小腿),” joked Nick. “I’d be lost without it. When I get in the water I float because 80 per cent of my body is lungs and my drumstick acts as a propeller (螺旋桨). ”

When Nick was born, his distraught mother couldn’t bring herself to hold him until he was four months old. “It was so hard for my parents, but right from the start they did their best to make me independent.” said Nick.

Throughout his childhood Nick dealt with the typical challenges. At the age of seven, Nick tried out some specially designed electronic arms and legs, in the hope that he would be more like other kids. But they turned out to be much too heavy for Nick to operate, affecting his flexibility quite significantly.

“When I was 13 I read a newspaper article about a disabled man who had managed to achieve great things and help others,” said Nick. “I realized why God had made us like this — to give hope to others. It was so inspirational to me that I decided to use my life to encourage others and decided to be thankful for what I do have, not get angry about what I don’t.”

“I tell people to keep on getting up when they fall and to always love themselves,” he said. “If I can encourage just one person then my job in this life is done.” By now, he has visited 35 different countries, touring the world as a motivational speaker.

Some people do not like anything to be out of place: they are never late for work, they return their books to the library on time, they remember people’s birthdays, and they pay their bills as soon as they arrive. Mr. Dodds is such a person.
