Running seems easy enough: Just grab a pair of sneakers and put one foot in front of the other, right? Well, anyone who struggled to get through a mile knows it’s not quite that simple. We’ve asked experienced runners to tell us something wrong they did when they started running. The following are some of their answers.
I got excited and signed up for a half-marathon with a few more experienced runner friends, but I wasn’t adequately prepared and didn’t train efficiently. I ended up with blisters(水泡) on my feet. I couldn’t wear shoes for two days!
—Cali Lavey
I have always been athletic and I have never been badly injured, but one day I felt a slight pain in my knee. I ignored it for a month until I realized I was having a hard time putting weight on my right leg. I finally went to a doctor. It took four months of weekly physical therapy(治疗) to heal. I shouldn’t have done that.
—Arnold
My biggest mistake was treating running like soccer practice: If I wasn’t exhausted by the end of practice, I felt as though I didn’t work hard enough. I run all of my runs at 80 percent effort, or the equivalent of what I now call tempo runs (节奏跑). I wasn’t warming up to the pace or cooling down effectively.
—Kate
I decided to go out for a run during the hottest part of the day. At the time, I told myself that it would be refreshing to sweat a little, but I didn’t bring adequate water. I returned feeling completely rundown, dehydrated (脱水的), and exhausted. If you must go out on a run during unfavorable weather, wear proper suits and bring enough water to keep you feeling strong.
— Sarah
1.Why did Cali suffer from her half-marathon?
A. She ran all the way barefoot.
B. She didn’t get ready for it.
C. She ran with experienced runners.
D. She did not have self-confidence.
2.What did Arnold regret doing?
A. Thinking he would never get injured.
B. Putting heavy weight on his right leg.
C. Spending about four month s treating his knee.
D. Waiting for so long to get his knee examined.
3.Who didn’t get enough water when running?
A. Cali B. Arnold C. Kate D. Sarah
4.The examples of the four runners mainly show that ________.
A. we should warm up before running
B. we should bring enough water when running
C. we shouldn’t think running is very easy
D. we shouldn’t ignore any pain when running

Nick Vujicic was born with no arms or legs, but the brave 32yearold man plays football and golf, swims, and surfs. Nick has a small foot on his left side, which helps him balance and enables him to kick. He uses his one foot to type, write with a pen and pick things up between his toes.
“I call it my chicken drumstick(畸形的小腿),” joked Nick. “I’d be lost without it. When I get in the water I float because 80 per cent of my body is lungs and my drumstick acts as a propeller (螺旋桨). ”
When Nick was born, his distraught mother couldn’t bring herself to hold him until he was four months old. “It was so hard for my parents, but right from the start they did their best to make me independent.” said Nick.
Throughout his childhood Nick dealt with the typical challenges. At the age of seven, Nick tried out some specially designed electronic arms and legs, in the hope that he would be more like other kids. But they turned out to be much too heavy for Nick to operate, affecting his flexibility quite significantly.
“When I was 13 I read a newspaper article about a disabled man who had managed to achieve great things and help others,” said Nick. “I realized why God had made us like this — to give hope to others. It was so inspirational to me that I decided to use my life to encourage others and decided to be thankful for what I do have, not get angry about what I don’t.”
“I tell people to keep on getting up when they fall and to always love themselves,” he said. “If I can encourage just one person then my job in this life is done.” By now, he has visited 35 different countries, touring the world as a motivational speaker.

As an old-fashioned explorer, Paul Salopek sets out on foot to circle around the world. He is also a modern-day explorer. On top of a few clothes, a small first-aid kit and notebooks, he is carrying a recorder, a video camera, a small computer and a satellite phone — a telephone that connects to a satellite and can be used in many places where cell-phones don’t work.
The journey is long: 21,000 miles! It will take seven years to complete it.
Salopek was born in California and spent his childhood in Mexico. He says he has always liked to travel and doesn’t like to rush. At the age of fourteen, he climbed Mount Whitney in California and crossed the state’s Sierra Nevada Mountains alone. When he was fifteen years old, he walked the length of Death Valley. He once rode a mule 2,000 miles through mountains in Mexico.
As a longtime reporter, Salopek has reported from Africa, Asia and Mexico. Now 51 years old, he plans to keep writing. As he travels around the world, he is writing stories about the people he meets and the way they live. He looks for how people find local solutions to big problems such as lack of food and water. He also records the sounds he hears and takes photos of the sky and the Earth’s surface.
The long walk started in the Rife Valley in Ethiopia in East Africa. Many consider East Africa to be home to the first humans, who lived 160,000 years ago.
Salopek is retracing the paths our ancestors took as they left Africa and settled in parts of the Middle East, Europe, Asia and the Americas. As Salopek is walking, he is learning more about himself and all of humankind.

The Man Who Never Put a Foot Wrong
Some people do not like anything to be out of place: they are never late for work, they return their books to the library on time, they remember people’s birthdays, and they pay their bills as soon as they arrive. Mr. Dodds is such a person.
Mr. Dodds works in a bank, and lives on his own. The only family he has is in the next town: his sister lives there with her husband, and her son, Mark. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
While driving, I sensed something wrong with my car. Pulling into the first parking lot I found, I stopped it and climbed out to assess the situation. My heart sank as I discovered that one of my rear(后面的)tires was flat.
I’d bought the secondhand car several months before, but it didn’t include a spare tire. Although I knew I needed to purchase one, my schedule was so tight that I hadn’t done it yet. Because I was working full-time in the emergency room at a local hospital and taking evening classes at a university fifty miles away.
Now here I was, alone forty miles from home. In those days, cell phones were a luxury. I had no way to call for assistance.
My spirits grew darker the minute I checked the place where I had pulled over. No one was around, except a rusty, red truck. It was getting dark. I had two options:stay in my car until morning or start walking in hopes of finding a convenience store with a pay phone. Neither option appealed to me.
I was about to grab my purse and set off on foot when a man came out from what seemed to be a law office. Pulling a set of keys from his pocket,he locked the office door, and then turned and saw me standing next to my car. I must have looked scared and confused as he headed straight toward me.
“Can 1 help you with anything?” he asked.
Judging from his appearance, I decided I could trust him.
“I have a flat tire but don’t have a spare,” I said, relieved to see him.
“I can help you remove the flat and then drive you to a tire shop to get it fixed,” he said.
I remembered the cautionary(告诫的)words my parents had drilled into my head:Never get in a car with a stranger.
“That’s okay,” I said. “Thanks anyway.”
